INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is the most common tropical dermatitis. It is caused by nematodes hosted by cats and dogs. Humans act as an accidental reservoir. Clinically, it manifests as a slow-growing, elevated linear, erythematous and pruritic plaque, on the sole of the foot. Diagnosis is clinical, based on the morphology of the lesion associated with recent travel to endemic areas.
OBJECTIVE: To present an autochthonous case of CLM in Chile.
CLINICAL CASE: A 3-year-old boy, presented with a linear lesion on his foot, clinically compatible with CLM. He received a single dose…

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a skin disease caused by infection with the larvae of animal hookworms. With conditions for infection more favourable in tropical climates, HrCLM in the UK is classically diagnosed in the returning traveller. We present two cases of clinically diagnosed UK-acquired HrCLM from a district general hospital in the south of England. A 68-year-old woman presented with a pruritic serpiginous tract on the right hand. She was a keen gardener and had been handling compost. A 50-year-old man, a long distance runner, presented with a similar lesion on th…

Pseudoterranova decipiens larva is a rare cause of anisakiasis. Indeed, prior to the present study, there had been only 12 reports of larval P. decipiens infection in the Republic of Korea. In June 2011, an anisakid larva, 32.1 mm in length and 0.88 mm in width, and finally identified as the third stage larva of P. decipiens owing to the presence of an intestinal cecum but lacking ventricular appendage, was discovered in a 61-year-old woman during the course of endoscopy executed as a part of routine physical examinations. The patient had eaten raw a rockfish 13 hr prior to the endoscopy, but …

A 25-year femalepresented at the eye OPD with the complaint of some white thing in her right eye. She had visual acuity of 6/18 in the right eye and 6/6 in the left one. Slit lamp examination showed she had a live larva actively moving in the anterior chamber of the right eye. The patient was started on oral steroid, topical moxifloxacin with steroid, cyclopentolate and planned for surgery. Exploration of lerva was done by visco-expressive method. Histopathology showed if to be a cysticercus lerva. Her visual acurity was 6/6 in the affected eye after one month.

We present a case of larva currens in a patient scheduled for renal transplant. Larva currens is an eruption caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, characterized most often by a pathognomonic, migratory, rapidly extending, serpiginous, urticarial eruption. Infected patients who are immunocompromised are at risk for disseminated and often fatal infection. In disseminated disease, diffuse petechiae and purpura may be present, and periumbilical ecchymoses may resemble thumbprints. The dermatologist may be in a unique position to diagnose this condition and institute therapy. Although found endemica…

A growing body of clinical cases suggests that a kind of nematode larva, type X larva of the suborder Spirurina that inhabits firefly squids (Watasenia scintillans, or 'Hotaru-ika' in Japanese), can cause acute ileus in humans. However, the larva itself has rarely been found in the wall of the obstructed intestine. We describe here a case of acute ileus, in which a type X spirurina larva was found histologically. A 60-year-old Japanese man suffered from acute abdomen, and an emergency laparotomy revealed a marked stenosis of the ileum. Histological study of the surgically resected ileum showed…

The female reproductive system of Thelazia lacrymalis (Nematoda: Thelaziidae) was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy (SE … seshoe-shaped embryos which increase in length and become slimmer forming pretzel-stage embryos and larvae rolled up. The larvae stretch gradually and finally lie straight but still covered with their egg membrane in the vagina. The egg membrane encloses the whole larva and is enlarged at the pointed tail of the larva forming a bulb. At the SEM level, t …

During the years 1990 to 1993, four cases of aural myiasis in children, caused by the flesh fly larvae of Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis, are reported. The patients were admitted to the Emergency Room complaining of discharging ear, otalgia, and itching. Flesh fly larvae were removed after local treatment and identified as Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis. These cases are discussed with a review of the literature.

A 8 years old girl suffering from the Larva-migrans-Syndrome (Ascariasis) was operated on the false diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The cardinal symptoms of this disease are chronic eosinophilia, hepatomegaly, affection of the lungs, vague abdominal symptoms, in this case simulating acute appendicitis. Diagnostics, therapy, prognosis and prophylaxis are dealt with in detail.

Visceral Larva migrans (VLM) is a parasite, which produces a disease by nematode species. Specific hosts are certain mammals. After penetrating the human organism, these parasites never mature to adult worms but can produce a lot of various symptoms which are dependent on the kind of manifestation. Perilous illnesses are described. The incidence is undoubtedly more than is realized. A new microprecipitation test has proved to be highly specific for the diagnosis. An effective nontoxic treatment in human medicine--exept for mebendazole--was not known until now. We report about the illness of a …
