Nd:YAG laser is widely used in surgery as well as in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery for 25 years. This type of laser is characterized by low absorption in water and haemoglobin, deep penetration to the tissue and high ability for vessels coagulation. The laser light can be guided with glassfiber and can be focussed with handpices and micromanipulators. These characteristics make Nd:YAG laser very useful surgical instrument, especially in ORL and head and neck surgery. BACKGROUND: Liposuction of the neck is currently one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures. In the present study, the author describes his experience with neck and jowl laser-assisted liposuction.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this procedure, submental lipodystrophy is treated with an Nd:YAG laser, at a 1,064 nm wavelength. Over a 5-year-period, 82 subjects were treated using 6-W power, 40-Hz frequency, 150-mJ energy, and 100-microsecond pulse width parameters. Histology was performed on fatty tissue samples.

Port-wine stains (PWS) are bluish red skin stains that are caused by enlarged, ectatic blood vessels in the dermis. The basis of the medical application of laser is its capacity to concentrate large amounts of energy on a small volume of tissue, mostly resulting in thermal coagulation necrosis. The effect of monochromate laser radiation varies, depending on the different absorption of various laser beams by tissues.
