BACKGROUND: Natural rubber latex (NRL) causes immediate, IgE-mast cell-mediated reactions in sensitized individuals, especially among health care workers and children with spina bifida. The immunopathogenesis of the reaction is obscure.
METHODS: To study the immunologic mechanisms of NRL allergy, rabbits were sensitized with two nonammoniated and one ammoniated NRL antigens. Subcutaneous and intratracheal injections were used to immunize rabbits. Intradermal skin tests, IgG antibodies against NRL in serum and lung lavage fluid, and pulmonary histologic features were evaluated.

Many cases of latex-induced intraoperatived anaphylaxis have been reported in Europe and the U.S. but not in Japan. We measured latex-specific IgE antibody in sera from the 108 atopic children with high serum IgE levels (over 1,000 U/ml). All of them were diagnosed to have asthma, atopic dermatitis and/or food intolerance. Latex agglutination by use of the Pneumoslide test on clinical blood cultures detected 22 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains as the etiological agents in 47 streptococcal septic episodes. We developed a latex agglutination test to detect antigen(s) of serogroup 1 Legionella pneumophila in urine and evaluated its ability to diagnose legionnaires' disease. PURPOSE: Treatment with H2 receptor antagonists may cause the heart to be more susceptible to atrioventricular conduction delay when exposed to an overwhelming insult by histamine released during an anaphylactic reaction.
