CONTEXT: Baseball pitching is a coordinated movement involving the spine. A previous study indicated that increased thoracic kyphosis angle in a standing position was a risk factor for medial elbow injuries in youth baseball players. However, spinal alignments in single-leg standing and their relationships with medial elbow injuries, scapular alignment, or hip joint range of motion are unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the difference in spinal alignment between standing and single-leg standing positions in youth baseball players and analyze their relationship with elbow injuries, scapular alignm

BACKGROUND: Low-energy lateral ankle injuries (Salter-Harris 1 distal fibula, distal fibula avulsion fractures, and radiograph-negative lateral ankle injuries) are common in pediatric patients. Patient-based outcomes for the 2 treatment options, short leg walking cast (CAST) and controlled ankle motion (CAM) boot, are unknown. This study aims to determine differences between 2 treatments of low-energy lateral ankle injuries in pediatric patients.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing the acute outcomes of CAST and CAM treatment for low-energy lateral ankle injuries in

Mangled limb injuries, typically caused by high-energy trauma, present significant challenges in surgical decision-making, particularly when considering limb salvage versus primary amputation. While common mechanisms include vehicular or industrial accidents, unconventional etiologies are rarely documented. We report a unique case of a 43-year-old female who sustained a mangled left lower limb injury following a gearbox explosion in a Porsche Cayenne. The injury resulted in a near-complete amputation at the distal third of the leg, with extensive contamination by oily and metallic debris. Radi

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) have a high rate of recurrence, highlighting the need for effective tertiary prevention strategies. Flywheel resistance training appears effective in targeting muscular risk factors for HSI.
HYPOTHESIS: Flywheel leg curls will result in greater improvements in eccentric knee flexor strength and biceps femoris long head (BFLH) fascicle length compared with conventional leg curls.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2.
METHODS: Twenty-six athletes with a history of HSI within the past 18 months participated in an 8-

INTRODUCTION: Blast injuries to the lower extremities often result in extensive soft tissue damage and are prone to complications such as infection and, rarely, maggot infestation. These challenges can jeopardize limb salvage, especially in resource-limited settings. We report a successfully managed case of a neglected anterior ankle blast wound complicated by infection and myiasis, treated with a multidisciplinary approach incorporating sunlight exposure and a cross-leg flap.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman presented with a 20-day-old anterior ankle blast injury complicated by infecti

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have examined the effect of whole body (WB) parameters on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) strain and loads, as well as knee joint kinetics and kinematics. However, articular cartilage damage occurs in relation to ACL failure, and the effect of WB parameters on ACL strain and articular cartilage biomechanics during dynamic tasks is unclear.
PURPOSES: (1) To investigate the effect of WB parameters on ACL strain, as well as articular cartilage stress and contact force, during a single-leg cross drop (SLCD) and single-leg drop (SLD). (2) To identify WB parameters pre

INTRODUCTION/IMPORTANCE: Crush injury with extensive soft tissue damage to an extremity is generally considered a contraindication to re-implantation and the extremity best managed by prosthesis. However good prosthesis is not easily available especially in resource constrained environment, the overall long term quality of life is also considered better with re-implantation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 24 year old tourist patient who presented with post-traumatic amputation of the left leg following a road traffic accident. The patient had no other injuries. Clinical examination revealed e

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the laparoscopic implantation of neuroprosthesis (LION) procedure would significantly alter the body composition of patients with chronic traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). The objectives were to determine the effect of the LION procedure on lean mass (LM), fatty mass (FM), and bone mineral content (BMC) in patients with SCI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five consecutive patients underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans before the LION procedure and at the one-year postoperative follow-up to determine changes in LM, FM, and BMC. Student paired t-test was us

RATIONALE: Limb-kinetic apraxia (LKA), a kind of apraxia, means the inability to perform precise and voluntary movements of extremities resulting from injury of the premotor cortex (PMC) or the corticofugal tract (CFT) from the PMC. Diagnosis of LKA is made by observation of movements without specific assessment tools.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old male underwent conservative management for traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage in the left basal ganglia and subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a pedestrian-car crash. When he was admitted to the rehabilitation department of a university hospital afte

BACKGROUND: Postural control is affected after incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) due to sensory and motor impairments. Any alteration in the availability of sensory information can challenge postural stability in this population and may lead to a variety of adaptive movement coordination patterns. Hence, identifying the underlying impairments and changes to movement coordination patterns is necessary for effective rehabilitation post-iSCI. This study aims to compare the postural control strategy between iSCI and able-bodied populations by quantifying the trunk-leg movement coordination unde

The objective of the present study was to derive injury probability curves applicable to the Hybrid III dummy (also termed the Anthropomorphic Test Device, ATD) lower leg under axial impacts for military applications. A matched-pair approach was used. Axial impacts were delivered to below knee foot-ankle complex preparations of the lower leg of the ATD using pendulum and custom vertical accelerator devices. Military boot was used in some tests. Post mortem human surrogate (PMHS) preparations were used as matched-pair tests for injury outcomes. The alignment was such that the foot-ankle complex

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury often show altered movement patterns, suggested to be partly due to impaired sensorimotor control. Here, we therefore aimed to assess muscular activity during movements often used in ACL-rehabilitation and to characterize associations between deviations in muscular activity and specific altered movement patterns, using and further exploring the previously developed Test for substitution Patterns (TSP).
METHODS: Sixteen participants (10 women) with unilateral ACL rupture performed Single and Double Leg Squats (SLS; DLS). Alte

The central tenet of this study was to develop, validate and apply various individualised 3D musculoskeletal models of the human body for application to single-leg landings over increasing vertical heights and horizontal distances. While contributing to an understanding of whether gender differences explain the higher rate of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries among females, this study also correlated various musculoskeletal variables significantly impacted by gender, height and/or distance and their interactions with two ACL injury-risk predictor variables; peak vertical gr

Dog bites are a frequent cause of extremity trauma and pose a substantial risk of infection and complications, particularly when bone exposure is present. We present the case of a 58-year-old male with no comorbidities who arrived at the emergency department after being attacked by a dog while cycling, sustaining multiple bites to the left lower extremity and right forearm. On physical examination, the patient exhibited complex wounds measuring up to 10 × 5 cm, with muscular and tibial bone exposure in the left leg but no associated fracture, and additional forearm lesions with muscle exposure

Fatigue causes the lower limb to land in an injury-prone state, but the underlying neuromuscular control changes remain unclear. This study aims to investigate lower limb muscle synergies during landing in basketball players, both before and after fatigue, to examine alterations in neuromuscular control strategies induced by fatigue. Eighteen male recreational basketball players performed landing tasks pre- and post-fatigue induced by 10 × 10 countermovement jumps. Electromyographic (EMG) data from eight muscles, including the erector spinae (ES), rectus abdominus (RA), gluteus maximus (GM), r
