A 71-year-old man who presented to hospital with chest pain and a history of cardiovascular disease was repeatedly hospitalised over the course of a month for care that included multiple investigations, intensive care, transfer to and from a metropolitan hospital, discharge, and readmissions for collapse, hemiparesis, and vision change. Since seat belt legislation was introduced in this country in 1983, we have seen an increasing number of patients admitted to our unit for observation following seat belt related sternal fractures. This study profiles the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident victims who were admitted at a level II trauma center. We retrospectively reviewed the trauma registry data for 111 patients who were admitted to the Parkview Hospital Level II Trauma Center following ATV crashes between January 1996 and June 2003. This study concerns spinal cord injuries (SCI) in a region of Portugal with a population of 1,721,650 inhabitants. Legislation has made it possible to identify deaths occurring during collection and transport. BACKGROUND: Shortages of anesthesia providers in rural areas have long resulted in access limitations in many US states. This situation prompted federal legislation designed to promote increased usage of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) in hospitals. PURPOSE: The demand for specialised eye care has quadrupled over the last two decades, driven by an aging population and the advent of new treatments. This surge has led to increased outsourcing by the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) Eye Hospital, initially relying on a fee-for-service model. This model, however, has been marked by excessive bureaucracy and transaction costs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical conditions of the in-patients with motor-vehicle injury and survey the distribution features of the injuries.
METHODS: The clinical records of 2,353 patients with motor-vehicle injuries who were hospitalized in a hospital in Shaoyang City of Hunan Province, China, within the period from 1997 to 2001, were collected and surveyed. The patients were diagnosed according to International Classification of Diseases-9th Revision (ICD-9) codes and statistical analysis was performed in an attempt to define the injury features of this cohort of patients.
