When cancer occurs, it is an illness that has meaning for the lives of all members of the family. This article focuses on the meaning and significance of the illness for the partner relationship, both the individuals within the relationship and the dyad. Results of two studies are presented: one study is based on in-depth interviews with 50 individuals who were newly diagnosed with cancer and their partners, and the other study used questionnaires from 412 patients and 175 partners to obtain statistical data. As participants in a panel study, 234 older adults were interviewed before, as well as after, serious flooding occurred in southeastern Kentucky. Floods are not uncommon in this area, but these were more widespread than most, and resulted in both previously exposed and newly exposed subsamples of disaster victims. This paper reviews the development of the concept of non-endogenous mania from myth to psychiatry and on to today. The varieties of causable mania are examined and an attempt is made to bring together the evidence which has been growing in the last few years from research in various different areas. As a result, a bridge appears between organic and psychoanalytical conceptualizations of mania, which may have important consequences for the management of manic patients in the future. Mania emerges as part of the depressive process rather than as its opposite.

The intention of this study was to examine the possibility of predicting course of illness in manic patients, using a stress variable as a predictor, together with other more traditional indices. On the basis of information on three easily available parameters--family history, age at onset, and stress intensity--20 manic patients who had independent life events preceding an index admission were allocated into various risk groups and predictions were then made with regard to future course of illness for 5 years. There have been many attempts to incriminate stress as a precipitant of both physical and psychiatric illness. An inventory of life events made on 100 patients attending the thyroid clinic of a general hospital for the first time showed a slight excess of stressful events in the histories of the thyrotoxic patients. Their timing in relation to the onset of symptoms did not support a causal relationship.

48 patients with alopecia areata, 30 with common baldness, 30 with fungal infections underwent the Paykel's Interview for recent life events. In the 6 months preceding onset, alopecic patients reported 123 events (mean = 2.56), patients with common baldness 22 events (mean = 0.73), patients with fungal infections 15 (mean = 0.50) (p less than 0.001). Events with negative impact, exits from social fields, uncontrolled events and socially desirable and undesirable events were significantly more frequent in alopecic patients than in controls.

BACKGROUND: Past research describes robust associations between education and health, yet findings have generally been limited to the examination of education as the number of years of education or educational attainment. Little is known about the specific features or processes underpinning education that are health protective. The objective of the current study was to address this gap by examining specific aspects of early education pertaining to student characteristics and experiences, as well as features of the classroom environment, in predicting cardiometabolic health in adulthood.

Observing other people improve their lives can be a powerful source of inspiration. Eight experiments explore the power, limits, and reasons for this power of personal change to inspire.
