Chylothorax, the accumulation of lymphatic fluid within the pleural cavity, is rarely caused by blunt trauma. We present the case of a 26-year-old male involved in a high-speed motor vehicle collision who sustained a T8 chance fracture and developed progressive right-sided pleural effusion. The patient was managed conservatively with drainage and dietary modification. His clinical history of congenital cardiac surgery, abnormal facies, and prior pleural effusion raised suspicion for Noonan syndrome, which has been associated with lymphatic maldevelopment and predisposition to chylothorax. This

Primary lymphedema of the foot and toes could be sometimes misdiagnosed by lymphoscintigraphy as a whole lower limb lymphatic insufficiency (LLLI). This is caused by using standard lymphoscintigraphic protocol based on one interstitial injection of radiotracer applied into the first interdigital space followed by image analysis of lower limb lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. Here, we show that a modification of the lymphoscintigraphic protocol and introduction of a second dose of radiotracer right above the inner ankle to the clinically healthy tissue can more accurately describe morphologica

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the abnormal deposition of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) as a core pathological feature. Meningeal lymphatic vessels are crucial for Aβ clearance, and their dysfunction accelerates AD progression. Vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C), through activation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 and downstream pathways, synergistically promotes lymphangiogenesis, enhances lymphatic permeability, and regulates lymphatic fluid flow, thereby improving Aβ clearance efficiency. Genetic factors and aging-related declin

Chyluria is a rare condition characterized by the presence of milky urine caused by lymphatic leakage into the urinary tract. A 78-year-old man presented with milky urine and was found to have 3+proteinuria on urinalysis. Although contrast-enhanced CT revealed no abnormalities, lymphangiography followed by non-contrast CT demonstrated lymphatic leakage communicating with the right renal pelvis. Conservative management with a low-fat diet failed to improve his symptoms. Therefore, retroperitoneoscopic lymphatic disconnection was performed around the right renal hilum. On postoperative day (POD)

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) parameters of lymphatic vessels between patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) and healthy controls. We introduced subcutaneous lymphatic capillary backflow (SLCBF) as a novel CEUS parameter to evaluate the ability of CEUS to distinguish abnormal from normal lymphatic function.
METHODS: Clinical and lymphatic CEUS data were prospectively collected from 50 participants, including 38 patients with BCRL (abnormal group) and 12 healthy volunteers (normal control group). Differences in lymphatic CEUS paramete

The aim of this study is to evaluate effectiveness of interstitial magnetic resonance lymphography as an examination for the depiction of the lymphatic system in humans by comparison with direct x-ray lymphography. We studied 14 subjects (two volunteers and 12 patients with clinical suspicion of lymphedema of the lower extremities). We first administered subcutaneous gadobutrol between the toes and performed MR lymphography. After seven days, we injected lipiodol into the lymph vessels of 8 patients and performed x-ray direct lymphography to compare findings of two methods. We identified the n

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) of the central nervous system arise sporadically or secondary to genomic variation. Established genetic etiologies include deleterious variants in KRIT1 (CCM1), malcavernin (CCM2), and PDCD10 (CCM3). KRIT1-related disease has not been described in conjunction with lymphatic defects, although lymphatic defects with abnormal endothelial cell junctions have been observed in mice deficient in HEG1-KRIT1 signaling. We report a proband with CCMs, multiple chylous mesenteric cysts, and chylous ascites with leaky lymphatic vasculature. Clinical short-read exome

A female patient with Noonan syndrome, attributed to a pathogenic RIT1 variant, presented with white perineal discharge at 8 years and 5 months of age. She had a history of chylothorax and recurrent respiratory infections requiring hospitalization. Discharge analysis revealed 99.5% lymphocytes and elevated triglyceride levels (1939 mg/dL; 21.9 mmol/L). Magnetic resonance imaging and contrast-enhanced computed tomography identified lymphatic abnormalities extending from the thoracic to the pelvic region. We suspected that the chylous ascites was being discharged through the genitals. Administra

Noonan syndrome is characterised by a Turner-like phenotype and a normal karyotype. Although it is reported to be associated with abnormalities of the lymphatic system, involvement of the pulmonary lymphatics is rare. We present a case of Noonan syndrome where a whole body scintigraphy revealed lymphangiectasia of the lower extremities, abdomen and lungs.

Generalised lymphatic anomaly (GLA), also known as lymphangiomatosis, is a rare disease caused by congenital abnormalities of lymphatic development. It usually presents in childhood but can also be diagnosed in adults. GLA encompasses a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from single-organ involvement to generalised disease. Given the rarity of the disease, most of the information regarding it comes from case reports. To date, no clinical trials concerning treatment are available. This review focuses on thoracic GLA and summarises possible diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels throughout the body that serves to return lymphatic fluid to the systemic blood circulation and serves as the immune system's highway in the afferent limb of the immune response. This paper reviews the basics of structure, function and development of the lymphatic system. The emphasis is on understanding the role of lymphatics in the cornea as related to angiogenesis and the clinical setting of corneal transplant rejection. The lymphatic system has two main functions: to drain excess extracellular fluid from capillary beds to return to the systemic

Lymphedema occurs when interstitial fluid and fibroadipose tissues accumulate abnormally because of decreased drainage of lymphatic fluid as a result of injury, infection, or congenital abnormalities of the lymphatic system drainage pathway. An accurate anatomical map of the lymphatic vasculature is needed not only for understanding the pathophysiology of lymphedema but also for surgical planning. However, because of their limited spatial resolution, no imaging modalities are currently able to noninvasively provide a clear visualization of the lymphatic vessels. Photoacoustic imaging is an eme

Secondary lymphedema is a severe complication of cancer treatment, but there is no effective curative method yet. Lymph node dissection and radiation therapy for cancer treatment may lead to secondary lymphedema, which is a chronic disease induced by malfunction of lymphatic flow. The lymphatic channel sheet (LCS) is an artificial micro-fluidic structure that was fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane to maintain lymphatic flow and induce lymphangiogenesis. The structure has two-dimensional multichannels that increase the probability of lymphangiogenesis and allow for relatively easy application

Plastic bronchitis (PB) is a rare disease caused by abnormal lymphatic vessels in the thorax. These vessels drain into the bronchi creating solid casts and potential life-threatening airway obstruction. This is a case report of a 30-year-old man diagnosed with PB after several years of extensive examinations due to symptoms misconceived as non-allergic asthma. We describe the first interventional treatment in Denmark using special T2 weighed MR imaging and dynamic contrast MR lymphangiography with subsequent embolisation of abnormal lymphatic vessels in the thorax.

With the aid of solutions of vital dyes the lymphatic capillaries in the ear of the mouse have been studied during the period of immediate reaction to injuries of various sorts and during the period of repair. The behavior of lymphatics severed by incision differs greatly from that of the small blood vessels. Instead of closing they sometimes remain open for as long as 48 hours. Materials introduced into the wound pass directly into the lymphatics through their gaping ends, a fact which will explain why infection from incisions is predominantly along the lymphatics. All around an injury the ly

The potential existence and roles of the meningeal lymphatic system in normal and pathological brain function have been a long-standing enigma. Recent evidence suggests that meningeal lymphatic vessels are present in both the mouse and human brain; in mice, they seem to play a role in clearing toxic amyloid-beta peptides, which have been connected with Alzheimer disease (AD). Here, we review the evidence linking the meningeal lymphatic system with human AD. Novel findings suggest that the recently described meningeal lymphatic vessels could be linked to, and possibly drain, the efferent parava

INTRODUCTION: Lymphoedema results from impaired lymphatic transport leading to the pathologic accumulation of protein-rich lymphatic fluid in the interstitial space, most commonly in the extremities. Primary lymphoedema, a developmental abnormality of the lymphatic system, may become evident later in life when a triggering event exceeds the capacity of normal lymphatic flow.
CLINICAL PICTURE: We present a 3-year-old nephrotic syndrome patient with an unusual localisation for primary lymphoedema.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The patient was treated with conservative approach and she was cured.

We report the CT and MRI appearances of dilated retroperitoneal lymphatic channels in six patients. In two patients, these dilated channels resembled a mass of confluent low-density lymph nodes on CT. On MR urography the lymphatic channels in all six patients were seen as a meshwork of multiple tubular, tortuous, fluid-filled structures in the retroperitoneum of the abdomen and pelvis. On axial T1W images, these channels were seen as numerous, interconnected small, nodular and streaky intensities and as a cloak of diffuse homogenous hyperintensity on T2W axial images.
