A Facile Route for the Preparation of Monodisperse Iron nitride at Silica Core/shell Nanostructures.

Uniform-sized iron oxide nanoparticles obtained from the solution phase thermal decomposition of the iron-oleate complex were encapsulated inside the silica shell by the reverse microemulsion technique, and then thermal treatment under NH3 to transfer the iron oxide to iron nitride. The transmission electron microscopy images distinctly demonstrated that the as-prepared iron nitride at silica core/shell nanostructures were highly uniform in particle-size distribution. By using iron oxide nanoparticles of 6.1, 10.3, 16.2, and 21.8 nm as starting materials, iron nitride nanoparticles with averag

Development of Polymer-Encapsulated, Amine-Functionalized Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles as MRI Contrast Agents.

The need for stable and well-defined magnetic nanoparticles is constantly increasing in biomedical applications; however, their preparation remains challenging. We used two different solvothermal methods (12 h reflux and a 4 min microwave, MW) to synthesize amine-functionalized zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4-NH2) superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The morphological features of the two ferrite samples were the same, but the average particle size was slightly larger in the case of MW activation: 47 ± 14 nm (Refl.) vs. 63 ± 20 nm (MW). Phase identification measurements confirmed the exclusive presence of zi

[CT and MRI of hip arthroplasty].

Metal-induced artifacts impair image quality of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with hip prostheses. Due to new developments in metal artifact reduction both methods can now be used for evaluation of a painful hip prosthesis. Iterative reconstruction algorithms and dual-energy scans are among the newer CT techniques for artifact reduction, while slice-encoding for metal artifact correction (SEMAC) and multi-acquisition variable-resonance image combination (MAVRIC) have introduced substantial improvements for MRI. Loosening of the hip prosthesis, osteol

In vivo macrophage imaging using MR targeted contrast agent for longitudinal evaluation of septic arthritis.

Macrophages are key-cells in the initiation, the development and the regulation of the inflammatory response to bacterial infection. Macrophages are intensively and increasingly recruited in septic joints from the early phases of infection and the infiltration is supposed to regress once efficient removal of the pathogens is obtained. The ability to identify in vivo macrophage activity in an infected joint can therefore provide two main applications: early detection of acute synovitis and monitoring of therapy. In vivo noninvasive detection of macrophages can be performed with magnetic resonan

Smart mesoporous silica nanoparticles for precision cancer therapy: Tumor targeting and stimuli-responsive controlled release.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are useful carriers for precision cancer therapy because their ordered pores, large surface area, controllable particle morphology/structure, and modifiable surface support high cargo loading, tumor targeting, and controlled release. Their role is no longer limited to passive drug storage. By adding molecular gatekeepers, cleavable linkers, responsive polymers, ligands, magnetic components, photosensitizers, or imaging modules, MSNs can translate tumor-related microenvironment signals or externally applied energy into site-specific therapeutic activation.

Di- and tri-component spinel ferrite nanocubes: synthesis and their comparative characterization for theranostic applications.

Spinel ferrite nanocubes (NCs), consisting of pure iron oxide or mixed ferrites, are largely acknowledged for their outstanding performance in magnetic hyperthermia treatment (MHT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications while their magnetic particle imaging (MPI) properties, particularly for this peculiar shape different from the conventional spherical nanoparticles (NPs), are relatively less investigated. In this work, we report on a non-hydrolytic synthesis approach to prepare mixed transition metal ferrite NCs. A series of NCs of mixed zinc-cobalt-ferrite were prepared and their m…

Multiplexed detection of metabolites of narcotic drugs from a single latent fingermark.

An immunoassay based technique is used for the detection of psychoactive substances in the sweat deposited within fingermarks of a narcotic drug user. Magnetic particles functionalized with antimorphine and antibenzoylecgonine antibodies were used for the detection of a metabolite of heroin (morphine) and a metabolite of cocaine (benzoylecgonine), respectively. The drug metabolites were detected individually as well as simultaneously from a single fingermark. The images of the fingermarks obtained using brightfield and fluorescence microscopy were of high evidential quality with resolution to

A case of asymptomatic hyperCKemia for 40 years leading to a diagnosis of treatable immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy.

Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is a rare but treatable inflammatory myopathy characterized by severe muscle necrosis with minimal inflammatory infiltration. IMNM typically presents with progressive proximal muscle weakness and markedly elevated serum creatine kinase (CK) levels. Here, we report a unique case of IMNM associated with anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) antibody, in which hyperCKemia persisted for 40 years before the onset of muscle symptoms. The extremely prolonged asymptomatic course initially suggested a hereditary myopathy; however, the absence of selective fa

Macrocyclic Pyclen-Based Hybrid Nanoprobes for Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Sentinel Lymph Node Metastasis.

The clinical diagnosis of sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis through contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains challenging. In this work, a pyclen-based amphiphilic gadolinium chelate (GdL) was developed and coassembled with DSPE-PEG2000 to form hybrid micelles for SLN metastasis imaging. The micelles exhibited high relaxivity and kinetic stability, with particle size and relaxivity adjustable by modifying the DSPE-PEG/GdL mass ratio. The DSPE-PEG/GdL micelles (15:1) displayed the highest T1 relaxivity (23.5 Gd mM-1 s-1 at 1.5 T), which is 5.6-fold greater than that of Gd-DO

Core-multi-shell design: unlocking multimodal capabilities in lanthanide-based nanoparticles as upconverting, T2-weighted MRI and CT probes.

Multimodal bioimaging probes merging optical imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and X-ray computed tomography (CT) capabilities have attracted considerable attention due to their potential biomedical applications. Lanthanide-based nanoparticles are promising candidates for multimodal imaging because of their optical, magnetic and X-ray attenuation properties. We prepared a set of hexagonal-phase (β)-NaGdF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4/NaDyF4 core/shell/shell nanoparticles (Dy-CSS NPs) and demonstrated their optical/T2-weighted MRI/CT multimodal capabilities. A known drawback of multimodal probes that

Adoption of Hybrid MRI-Linac Systems for the Treatment of Brain Tumors: A Systematic Review of the Current Literature Regarding Clinical and Technical Features.

BACKGROUND: Possible advantages of magnetic resonance (MR)-guided radiation therapy (MRgRT) for the treatment of brain tumors include improved definition of treatment volumes and organs at risk (OARs) that could allow margin reductions, resulting in limited dose to the OARs and/or dose escalation to target volumes. Recently, hybrid systems integrating a linear accelerator and an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan (MRI-linacs, MRL) have been introduced, that could potentially lead to a fully MRI-based treatment workflow. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the published literature

Precise size control of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles for liver cancer diagnosis and magnetic hyperthermia therapy.

Multifunctional superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are pivotal in bioapplications, with optimal size ranges varying by application. Exploring each size is essential to maximize functionality, as even 1-2 nm variations can significantly affect their properties. Therefore, discussing the effects of different sizes within the single-domain range of superparamagnetic ferrites is essential for understanding their performance in bioapplications. In this study, we synthesize monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles with diameter ranging from 4.0 to 13.5 nm, the surface modified with PEGylated (Fe3O4-

Capillary-induced adhesive contact dynamics determines dissipation and flow structure in wetted hydrogel packings.

The bulk response of a granular material is strongly influenced by particle and contact properties, such as friction coefficients, particle softness, lubrication on the contact scale and adhesion between particles. This study explores the bulk flow of wetted hydrogel particles, which are soft but also weakly adhesive due to capillary bridges. This simplified granular material with minimal contact friction reveals key insights in the role of capillary stresses on the macroscopic flow. At the micro-scale, we demonstrate a direct correlation between relative humidity (RH) and liquid bridge size b

Liquid Marbles in Nature: Craft of Aphids for Survival.

Some aphids that live in the leaf galls of the host plant are known to fabricate liquid marbles consisting of honeydew and wax particles as an inner liquid and a stabilizer, respectively. In this study, the liquid marbles fabricated by the galling aphids, Eriosoma moriokense, were extensively characterized with respect to size and size distribution, shape, nanomorphology, liquid/solid weight ratio, and chemical compositions. The stereo microscopy studies confirmed that the liquid marbles have a near-spherical morphology and that the number-average diameter was 368 ± 152 μm, which is 1 order of

[A case of anti-SRP antibody-positive immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy triggered by human parvovirus B19 infection].

We have reported a case of a 44-year-old woman with anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) antibody-positive immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy triggered by human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection. She was admitted to the hospital because of lower leg edema and muscle weakness after erythema infectiosum. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lower extremities revealed high signals in the proximal muscles and subcutaneous edema on STIR. Muscle biopsy showed myofiber regenerative changes and variation in fiber size. A myositis-specific autoantibody profile indicated a positive result for anti-SRP a

Computer-Aided Intra-Operatory Positioning of an MRgHIFU Applicator Dedicated to Abdominal Thermal Therapy Using Particle Swarm Optimization.

PURPOSE: Transducer positioning for liver ablation by magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) is challenging due to the presence of air-filled organs or bones on the beam path. This paper presents a software tool developed to optimize the positioning of a HIFU transducer dedicated to abdominal thermal therapy, to maximize the treatment's efficiency while minimizing the near-field risk. METHODS: A software tool was developed to determine the theoretical optimal position (TOP) of the transducer based on the minimization of a cost function using the particle swarm o
