Participation in preschool activities of children with autistic spectrum disorder and comparison to typically developing children.

BACKGROUND: Participation is essential to children's development and is a major focus of intervention. This study aimed to describe the participation patterns of children with ASD, in comparison to typically developing (TD) children. METHODS: 70 preschoolers participated: 33 children with ASD, attending non-inclusive-education settings; and 37 TD children, attending mainstream educational settings. Two occupational therapists assessed their participation through structured observations in self-care activities, play, learning, and social participation areas; demographic and environmental quest

Comparison of features of social problem-solving scripts across three groups: educable intellectually disabled, socially poorly adapted, and socially well-adapted students.

The aim of this research was to compare the features of social problem-solving scripts across groups of students with different social problem-solving abilities, based on dynamic memory theory. 54 (32 girls/22 boys) educable intellectually disabled students, 58 (32 girls/26 boys) socially poorly adapted students, and 50 (28 girls/22 boys) socially well-adapted students participated. The average ages for educable intellectually disabled, poorly adapted, and well-adapted students were 13.9 yr. (SD = 1.7), 11.1 yr. (SD = .6), and 11 yr. (SD = .4), respectively. A semi-structured interview was des

They only see it when the sun shines in my ears: exploring perceptions of adolescent hearing aid users.

Hard-of-hearing (HOH) young people may encounter multiple challenges to their educational, social, and emotional development. The benefits of wearing hearing aids to enhance communication may be countered by negative stigma associated with hearing aids. This study explored the experience of 16 bilaterally, moderately to severely HOH adolescents in mainstream education to understand their perceptions of using hearing aids. A core category of "normality" emerged from the data, which captures the predominant issue for these young people. The sense of being normal may be situationally determined,

Theory and research in practice: an opportunity group for young children with developmental difficulties.

Recent research demonstrates, if demonstration be needed, the close relationship between social, emotional and cognitive development and the development of speech and language during the early years of life. This suggests the need for careful consideration of children's social and emotional experiences as part of any process of diagnosis/treatment/education offered to children whose development gives cause for concern particularly when there is no major physical disability to explain the difficulties. The paper describes eight 3-4-year-old children with delayed development, disordered behaviou

Cognitive correlates of mathematical achievement in children with cerebral palsy and typically developing children.

BACKGROUND: Remarkably few studies have investigated the nature and origin of learning difficulties in children with cerebral palsy (CP). AIMS: To investigate math achievement in terms of word-problem solving ability in children with CP and controls. Because of the potential importance of reading for word-problem solving, we investigated reading as well. SAMPLE: Children with CP attending either special (n= 41) or mainstream schools (n= 16) and a control group of typically developing children in mainstream schools (n= 16). METHOD: Group differences in third grade math and reading, controlle

Substance use behaviors of young people with a moderate learning disability: a longitudinal analysis.

Substance use behaviors of young people attending a special school are reported over a 4-year period from the age of 12-16 years. The article investigated these behaviors by surveying a cohort of young people with a statement for moderate learning disabilities annually during the last 4 years of compulsory schooling. The findings show that these young people consistently reported lower levels of tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis use compared with those attending mainstream school. No other illicit drug use was reported. The potential implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the

Teacher behavior-related object detection with an edge-enhanced and dynamic multi-scale network toward metaverse-oriented educational scenarios.

Teacher behavior analysis is important for understanding instructional patterns and can provide perception support for metaverse-oriented educational environments. This paper focuses on teacher behavior-related object detection in classroom environments and discusses its potential role as a perception module for future metaverse-oriented educational systems. To address challenges such as scale variation, complex backgrounds, and inaccurate localization, an enhanced YOLOv8-based method is proposed. Specifically, an edge-enhanced feature extraction module is introduced to improve boundary repres

Evaluation of the relationship development intervention program.

This study is the second in a series evaluating the effectiveness of Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) to address unique deficits inherent in autism spectrum disorders. RDI is a parent-based, cognitive-developmental approach, in which primary caregivers are trained to provide daily opportunities for successful functioning in increasingly challenging dynamic systems. This study reviewed the progress of 16 children who participated in RDI between 2000 and 2005. Changes in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), flexibility, and

Behavioural and emotional characteristics in children with Sotos syndrome and learning disabilities.

In contrast to physical characteristics, the developmental and behavioural characteristics of children with Sotos syndrome are not well documented. Data from a survey of 27 children (17 males and 10 females; mean age 10 years 7 months; range 6 to 15 years) with mild and moderate learning disabilities were obtained concerning school placement, social networks, adaptive competence, and behavioural problems and compared with a control group matched for cognitive level and age. Ten children attended a mainstream school (with remedial assistance), eight were placed in a school for children with lea

Information for the Adolescent Woman and Her Parents: Abortion and the Risk of Breast Cancer.

Studies from many nations suggest that induced abortion (IA) may be a causal risk factor for the development of breast cancer. Researchers agree that IA contributes to the increased risk of breast cancer by delaying the timing of a full-term pregnancy which is a protective factor. Increasing numbers of studies now show that IA prior to 32 weeks in and of itself is a risk factor for breast cancer due to the physiology of breast development and the manner in which abortion interferes with the maturation of the breast cells. Although largely ignored by the mainstream medical community, this risk

Receipt of school health education and school health service among adolescent immigrants in Massachusetts.

This study assessed whether immigrant adolescents receive health education and services in schools at levels comparable to native-born peers. Surveys from 2,635 8th and 10th graders allowed comparisons between students living in the United States "always" (n = 2,080), "more than six years" (n = 299), and "six years or less" (n = 191). Immigrant students were equally likely to receive health education, more likely to use peer counseling or support groups (p < .001), and less likely to use health services (p < .05). They communicated more often with staff (p < .05), were more concerned about men

Filling the Gaps: Evaluation of an Online Continuing Professional Development Program for Australian Registered Nurses to Build Capacity to Care for People With Developmental Disability.

BACKGROUND: People with autism spectrum disorder and/or intellectual disability have some of the worst health outcomes of any population group. Internationally, it has been identified that RNs are not adequately prepared to provide care to these groups through mainstream health care services. METHOD: A cross-sectional online evaluation survey of participants who completed learning to build the capacity of RNs to care for people with autism spectrum disorder and/or intellectual disability was conducted. RESULTS: The learning site was found to be easily accessible and engaging, and it facilita

When saying 'go read it again' won't work: Multisensory ideas for more inclusive teaching & learning.

For a progressively diverse student cohort whose members learn in a multiplicity of ways based on individuals' educational experiences, cognitive profiles and academic capabilities, medical (human and veterinary) studies may prove increasingly challenging. Traditional 'one size fits all' methods of instruction may no longer be appropriate nor allow students to reach their personal academic potential. More individually tailored approaches might prove more successful. Using ten case study 'vignettes', the author draws on experience of offering specialist study skills support to human and veterin

Effectiveness of interventions for improving educational outcomes for people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities are consistently falling behind in educational outcomes compared to their peers without disabilities, whether measured in terms of school enrolment, school completion, mean years of schooling, or literacy levels. These inequalities in education contribute to people with disabilities being less likely to achieve employment, or earn as much if they are employed, as people without disabilities. Evidence suggests that the gap in educational attainment for people with and without disabilities is greatest in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Exclusion of

Education as a Tool to Navigate Changing Technology in Radiation Oncology.

While technological innovation in radiation therapy (RT) continues to accelerate, safe and equitable adoption of emerging tools is reliant on the readiness of the workforce and the robustness of associated educational frameworks. Early experience with disruptive technologies such as intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) has taught us that fragmented or insufficient education can create an implementation barrier. The IDEPTH framework (as illustrated here using the translation of IMRT from development to mainstream implementation) describes how development and implementation of new technologies requires
