Evolution and Possible Explanations for the Trends in New HIV Diagnoses in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, Compared to the Rest of Canada, 1985-2022.

BACKGROUND: Canada aims to end the HIV epidemic as a public health threat by 2030. However, the provinces Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba reported 564 new HIV diagnoses in 2021 and over 600 in 2022. This study describes changes in HIV epidemiology in these three provinces compared to the rest of Canada between 1985 and 2022. METHODS: This was an ecological study that used data from publicly available HIV reports published by the Governments of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Canada from the first reported HIV diagnoses to the latest available information. Variables of interest includ…

Registry Cohort Study to Determine Risk for Multiple Sclerosis after Vaccination for Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1) with Arepanrix, Manitoba, Canada.

To investigate a potential risk for multiple sclerosis (MS) after vaccination with Arepanrix, the GlaxoSmithKline AS03-adjuvanted influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine, we used the provincewide immunization registry for Manitoba, Canada, to match 341,347 persons vaccinated during the 2009 pandemic to 485,941 unvaccinated persons on age, sex, address, and a propensity score measuring the probability of vaccination. We used a previously validated algorithm to identify MS cases from provincial hospital, physician, and prescription drug claims databases. After 12 months of follow-up, the age-adjusted inc…

Early Evidence of the Effectiveness of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Program Against Anogenital Warts in Manitoba, Canada: A Registry Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the effectiveness of the quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (qHPV) vaccination program in Manitoba, Canada, in reducing incident anogenital warts (AGWs) and to what extent effectiveness depends on age at vaccination and number of doses. METHODS: Female participants 9 years or older who received the qHPV in Manitoba between September 2006 and March 2013 (n = 31,464) through the publicly funded school-based program and a high-risk catch-up program were included. They were matched on age and area of residence to unvaccinated female participants. Information on inci…

Social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV healthcare and harm reduction services for people experiencing syndemics in Manitoba: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Manitoba, Canada, there has been an increase in the number of people newly diagnosed with HIV and those not returning for regular HIV care. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased sex and gender disparities in disease risk and mortalities, decreased harm reduction services and reduced access to healthcare. These health crises intersect with increased drug use and drug poisoning deaths, houselessness and other structural and social factors most acutely among historically underserved groups. We aim to explore the social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV care an…

A homozygous canonical splice acceptor site mutation in PRUNE1 is responsible for a rare childhood neurodegenerative disease in Manitoba Cree families.

Autosomal recessive PRUNE1 mutations are reported to cause a severe neurodevelopmental disorder with microcephaly, hypotonia, and brain malformations. We describe clinical and neuropathological features in a cohort of nine individuals of Cree descent who, because of a founder effect, are homozygous for the same PRUNE1 mutation. They follow the course of a combined neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disease, rather than a pure failure of normal development. This cohort presented in infancy with features of lower motor neuron disease, such as hypotonia, contractures, tongue fasciculations, and

Reoccurrence of Suspected Human-to-Turkey Transmission of H1N1 Pandemic 2009 Virus in Turkey Breeder Flocks in Ontario and Manitoba, 2016.

Soon after the emergence of 2009 pandemic H1N1, the first outbreaks in breeder turkey operations were reported that implicated human-to-turkey transmission. In the spring of 2016, the reoccurrence of 2009 pandemic H1N1 lineage viruses infecting breeder turkey flocks in Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, also implicated human-to-turkey transmission. In addition to raising concerns over biosecurity and vaccine failures, these cases once again raise the issue of whether turkeys have the potential to act as a bridge species to generate novel influenza A virus reassortants with public health implication…

Sexually transmitted diseases in Manitoba: evaluation of physician treatment practices, STD drug utilization, and compliance with screening and treatment guidelines.

BACKGROUND AND GOAL: There is little information in Manitoba on the utilization of drugs for sexually transmitted disease (STD) treatment and the extent to which physicians comply with STD screening and treatment guidelines. This study was undertaken to provide such information to inform policy and program development. METHODS: Physicians providing STD care were asked to complete a simple record for each new STD index client or contact seen. This information was subsequently linked with data from provincial diagnostic and treatment databases. RESULTS: Between October 1997 and September 1998,…

Case report: an investigation of chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline residues in suspect swine slaughtered in Manitoba, Canada, October 1987 to March 1988.

Tissue samples from 623 hogs suspected of having received antibiotic treatment were collected at federally-inspected abattoirs in Manitoba and submitted for analysis from October 1987 to March 1988. Initially, samples were screened by a multi-residue thin layer chromatography/bio-autography method, but, during the final two months of the investigation, analysis was restricted to a quantitative high performance liquid chromatography method for tetracycline antibiotics only. Sixteen animals (3%) were found with detectable tissue levels of chlortetracycline ranging from 0.10 to 1.38 ppm. One hund…

Automated abdominal aortic calcification and major adverse cardiovascular events in people undergoing osteoporosis screening: the Manitoba Bone Mineral Density Registry.

Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) images from bone density machines enable the automated machine learning assessment of abdominal aortic calcification (ML-AAC), a marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The objective of this study was to describe the risk of a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE, from linked health records) in patients attending routine bone mineral density (BMD) testing and meeting specific criteria based on age, BMD, height loss, or glucocorticoid use have a VFA in the Manitoba BMD Registry. The cohort included 10 250 individuals (mean age 75.5 yr, 94% women with…

Automated abdominal aortic calcification scoring from vertebral fracture assessment images and fall-associated hospitalisations: the Manitoba Bone Mineral Density Registry.

Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), a subclinical measure of cardiovascular disease (CVD) that can be assessed on vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) images during osteoporosis screening, is reported to be a falls risk factor. A limitation to incorporating AAC clinically is that its scoring requires trained experts and is time-consuming. We examined if our machine learning (ML) algorithm for AAC (ML-AAC24) is associated with a higher fall-associated hospitalisation risk in the Manitoba Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Registry. A total of 8565 individuals (94.0% female, age 75.7 ± 6.8 years) who h…

Glycogen synthase kinase-3ß inhibitor use and prostate cancer incidence in Manitoba, Canada: A population-based nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known on the effect of glycogen synthase kinase-3ß inhibitors (GSK3Is), as a class, on prostate cancer (PC). We aimed to study this in the Canadian province of Manitoba, because mixed results have been reported on the effect of valproate. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study among cancer-free Manitobans with ≥ 5 years of medical history in which we matched all men 40 years or older diagnosed with PC between 2000 and 2018 (N = 11,189) on period, age, length of available drug information to cancer-free controls (N = 55,728). Manitoba mothers and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders study (MBMomsFASD): protocol for a population-based cohort study using linked administrative data.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a significant public health concern. To prevent FASD, factors that place women at risk for giving birth to children with FASD must be investigated; however, there are little data in this area. This paper describes the development of the Manitoba mothers and FASD study, a retrospective cohort of mothers whose children were diagnosed with FASD, generated to investigate: (1) risk factors associated with giving birth to children with FASD; (2) maternal physical and health outcomes, as well as the usage of health and social services. METHODS:…
