A laceration of the distal membranous trachea usually has been repaired through a right thoracotomy, and occasionally through a lateral cervical approach. In the case reported here, a simple method of treating this complication was used that involved a mediastinoscopy incision. Suturing of the tear is carried out easily through a vertical incision made in the anterior wall of the trachea, which is then closed with no further consequences. The patient made a quick recovery, and the cosmetic result was excellent.

Analysis of the case histories of 116 patients who were hospitalized for a second time after sectoral resection of the mammary gland conducted earlier for dyshormonal hyperplasia showed that the possible causes of the discovered changes could be, on the one hand, incomplete removal or failure of removal of the pathological focus, and, on the other, advancement of changes in the remaining part of the gland, particularly in the presence of epithelial proliferation. This requires careful techniques of sectoral resection and continuous postoperative control.

INTRODUCTION: Oncoplastic breast surgery (OPS) with immediate symmetrization is commonly performed. However, its impact on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) remains uncertain.
METHODS: Patients with stage 0-III breast cancer who underwent OPS (including oncoplastic breast conserving surgery, or nipple- or skin-sparing mastectomy) at a Swiss university hospital between 01/2013-12/2023 who completed a postoperative BREAST-Q questionnaire were identified from a prospectively maintained database. A generalized linear model was used to detect differences in PROs between those who underwent unilater

Aim: Surgical therapy for early-stage breast cancer, including lumpectomy and mastectomy, are common treatments for early-stage breast cancer. Despite having favorable survival outcomes, these procedures can lead to repeat surgeries, adverse outcomes, excess costs and potentially aggressive resections. This is a protocol for a study aims to evaluate three main areas: the risk factors, costs and complications of re-operations following lumpectomy ('Lumpectomy Cohort'), the identification of patients potentially overtreated with mastectomy ('Mastectomy Cohort') and the cost and healthcare resour

BACKGROUND: The conventional approach to treatment for Paget's disease of the breast has been mastectomy, but there is an increasing trend to consider breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by radiotherapy (RT) in these patients. This study aimed to provide an updated systematic review and meta-analysis comparing outcomes after BCS with RT versus mastectomy in the treatment of Paget's disease of the breast.
METHODS: Studies before May 2021 were included. Primary outcomes were overall survival and local recurrence. Separate analyses of Paget's disease associated with ductal carcinoma in situ

BACKGROUND: Anatomic extent of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) may be uncertain in spite of clinical, pathologic, and imaging data. Consequently close/positive margins are common with lumpectomy for DCIS and often lead to a challenge in deciding whether to perform a re-excision or mastectomy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From a single health system, we identified cases of lumpectomy for DCIS with close/positive margins who underwent re-excision for the purpose of constructing a nomogram. In total, 289 patients were available for analysis. The patients were randomly divided into two sets allocating 7

BACKGROUND: In early studies, local recurrence (LR) rates were higher after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in comparison with upfront surgery. Modern outcomes are uncertain, particularly among those who are initially breast-conserving surgery-ineligible (BCSi) and downstage to being breast-conserving surgery-eligible (BCSe).
METHODS: Among patients with cT1-3 breast cancer treated from 2014 to 2018 who were BCSe after NAC, clinicopathologic characteristics and LR were compared between initially BCSe patients and BCSi patients who downstaged. Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) eligibility was det

PURPOSE: The presence of extensive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) adjacent to HER2-positive invasive breast cancer (IBC) is often a contra-indication for breast-conserving surgery, even in case of excellent treatment response of the invasive component. Data on the response of DCIS to neoadjuvant systemic treatment (NST) are limited. Therefore, we estimated the response of adjacent DCIS to NST-containing HER2-blockade in HER2-positive breast cancer patients and assessed the association of clinicopathological and radiological factors with response.
METHODS: Pre-NST biopsies were examined to de

PURPOSE: Patients who have ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are undergoing bilateral mastectomy at increasing rates. One of the reasons is to minimize contralateral breast cancer (CBC) risk. The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of and risk factors associated with CBC in women treated for DCIS.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of women with DCIS at surgery from 2007 to 2014 who had at least five-year follow-up. Patient attributes, imaging findings, histopathology results, and surgical and long-term outcomes were collected. Features associated with a CBC were assessed w

Complete removal of cancerous tissue and preservation of breast cosmesis with a single breast conserving surgery (BCS) is essential for surgeons. New and better options would allow them to more consistently achieve this goal and expand the number of women that receive this preferred therapy, while minimizing the need for re-excision and revision procedures or more aggressive surgical approaches (i.e., mastectomy). We have developed and evaluated a regenerative tissue filler that is applied as a liquid to defects during BCS prior to transitioning to a fibrillar collagen scaffold with soft tissu

CONTEXT: Many patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) receive treatment that is too extensive.
OBJECTIVE: To take a holistic approach in comparing the effectiveness in cancer prevention between mastectomy and breast-conserving surgery (BCS) for patients with DCIS.
DESIGN: Female Kaiser Permanente Southern California members who underwent surgery for treatment of single primary DCIS from 2004 to 2014 were identified by the Kaiser Permanente Southern California cancer registry and HealthConnect database.
METHOD: Two-stage residual inclusion with the surgeon's preference of surgical proc

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is the standard method for axillary staging of early breast cancer. Recent studies have focused on questioning the initial contraindication to the technique. There has been insufficient data to recommend SLNB in patients with previous aesthetic breast surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between April 2001 and June 2007, 70 patients with previous breast aesthetic surgery underwent SLNB. Fifty had a previous breast augmentation and 20 had breast reduction mammoplasty. All patients underwent lymphoscintigraphy with 99Tc according to our standard techniqu

OBJECTIVE: To characterize a clinical syndrome that occurs in some women who have undergone breast or axillary lymph node biopsy or partial mastectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six case reports are presented, the clinical and histopathologic findings are described, and the implications for recognition of this entity are discussed.
RESULTS: Patients who had undergone partial mastectomy, breast biopsy, or axillary lymph node excision shortly thereafter had clinical signs (most notably, erythema and edema) suggestive of infectious mastitis or inflammatory breast cancer. Representative histologic s

A 44-year-old woman presented for sentinel node biopsy and segmental mastectomy. After anesthetic induction, a laryngeal mask airway was placed, and ventilation was satisfactory. Three minutes after isosulfan blue dye injection, ventilation became difficult. The laryngeal mask airway was removed, and an endotracheal tube was easily placed. Twenty minutes later, she became hypotensive and unresponsive to phenylephrine, ephedrine, and vasopressin. With erythema and swelling in her arm and chest, low-dose epinephrine was titrated until her mean arterial blood pressure stabilized. Serum tryptase w

OBJECTIVE: Breast-conserving therapy (BCT) includes breast-conserving surgery (BCS) combined with radiation therapy (RT). RT plays a crucial role in improving the prognosis of patients who undergo BCS. However, obesity is a potential risk factor for resistance to radiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate any difference in the long-term prognosis of patients with early stage breast cancer and obesity treated with BCT or total mastectomy (TM).
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective cohort study involving 1125 patients diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and obesi

BACKGROUND: Real world evidence is increasingly used in population-level breast cancer research, but the validity of procedure recording across routinely collected healthcare datasets in England remains uncertain. Although Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) can be linked to other datasets, reliable capture of surgery in the Cancer Treatments dataset would provide a cancer-specific source that can be used directly alongside tumour characteristics and treatment data. We evaluated capture of breast cancer surgery in the Cancer Treatments dataset with HES.
METHODS: This retrospective study include

UNLABELLED: Breast cancer (BC) is a highly prevalent and significant health concern influencing women worldwide. This is crucial for understanding the impact of breast cancer and developing targeted prevention and treatment strategies. The research aims to investigate the performance of the 3DCRT model by comparing BCS and MRM plans in terms of mean lung dose.
PURPOSE: A comparative analysis of MRM and BCS treatment plans was conducted to determine the most appropriate strategy for breast cancer, with an emphasis on minimizing radiation dose to the lungs.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Breast cancer

BACKGROUND: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common form of noninvasive breast cancer and is associated with an excellent prognosis. As a result, there is concern about overdiagnosis and overtreatment of DCIS because most patients with DCIS are treated as though they have invasive breast cancer and undergo either breast-conserving surgery (BCS)-most commonly followed by radiation therapy (RT)-or mastectomy. Little research to date has focused on nonclinical factors influencing treatments for DCIS.
METHODS: Population-based data were analyzed from five state cancer registries (Calif
