INTRODUCTION: The action plan for the maternal mortality is generally based on research studies' results carried out within hospital structure.
OBJECTIVES: Determination and follow-up of the evolution of maternal mortality from 1998 to 2007 in a level 3 Tunisian maternity and identification of its main causes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: It is a retrospective study carried out between January 1998 and December 2007. In our service, since 1984, maternal deaths are systematically recorded. Information about deaths are collected from the following sources: childbirth folder, folder of hospitalization…

We studied 29 cases of maternal death occurring over a period of 3 years in the "Centre de Maternité et de Néonatologie de La Rabta-Tunis"; managed by the same staff. 42,028 live births occurred during the study years with 43,220 total births from April 24th 1986 to April 23rd 1989. The maternal mortality rate was 69 per 100,000 live births. A maternal age of under 35, nulliparity and grand multiparity were found, as is well known, to be risk factors. Maternal transfer in obstructed labour from rural maternity units raises the maternal death risk 12 times: 14 deaths out of 29 occurred in trans…

Eclampsia is a common complication of preeclampsia patients and can be life-threatening for both the mother and the fetus. Hence, timely intervention and appropriate management of this detrimental condition are extremely crucial. Eclampsia is described as the occurrence of generalized convulsions in patients with preeclampsia. Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is the drug of choice for treating and preventing eclampsia. This review aims to study and analyze the available literature on the pathogenesis of eclampsia, the pharmacology of MgSO4, and its effectiveness in the management of eclampsia. Other

UNLABELLED: After years of failure to obtain accurate statistics on maternal mortality, the United States noted a sharp increase in its maternal mortality rate with widening racial and ethnic disparities. The 2016 report shocked the nation by documenting a 26 percent increase in maternal mortality from 18.8/100,000 live births in 2000 to 23.8 in 2014. Suggested etiologies of this increase included artifact as a result of improved maternal death surveillance, incorrect use of ICD-10 codes, healthcare disparities, lack of family support and other social barriers, substance abuse and violence, de…

Maternal mortality is a worldwide problem. Measuring maternal mortality and identifying its causes is essential, and should be assessed regularly for the purpose of planning, monitoring and evaluation of provided maternal health care. Quality of care indicators such as case fatality rate is used to measure the facility performance, in particular, quality and promptness of care. This descriptive study aimed to calculate maternal mortality ratio, quality of care indicators such as maternal mortality index, case fatality and direct obstetric case fatality rate for the Women's Health Hospital and …

In the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya) a stable increase of indicator of birth rate was marked during 1990-2012. Against the background of increase of indicator of birth rate the indicator of maternal mortality has a positive tendency to decrease. During 1990-2012, indicator of maternal mortality decreased from 560.8 to 29.4 per 100 000 of born alive. In the structure of causes of maternal mortality the percentage of direct obstetric causes of death decreased i.e. toxicosis on 18%, bleeding on 82%, sepsis on 9.1%. During 2007-2012 no death case was detected. The increase of specific weight of una…

Maternal mortality rate in Japan decreased dramatically in the last 50 years. It reached 3.2, one of the lowest in the world. Currently the main causes of maternal death in Japan are hemorrhage, obstetric embolism and pregnancy induced hypertension. Several modifications to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation are needed for pregnant women. Uterine displacement, deeper chest compressions, and early tracheal intubation are essential. Emergency cesarean delivery should be considered as soon as a pregnant woman develops cardiac arrest.

The relationship between maternal vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy and infant mortality is unclear. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 377 HIV-negative women and their infants in Blantyre, Malawi. Serum vitamin A levels were measured during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and infants were followed during the first year of life. From delivery until 12 months of age, 18 infants died (47.7 per 1000). Mothers of infants who died had lower serum vitamin A levels during pregnancy (0.74 +/- 0.13 mumol/l) compared with mothers of infants who did not die (1.02 +/- 0.03 mumol/l)

OBJECTIVE: To highlight recent trends in maternal mortality in Hacettepe University Hospital.
METHOD: A retrospective clinical analysis of 117 maternal deaths between 1968 and 1992.
RESULTS: The overall maternal mortality ratio was 180/100,000 (108/59,993). In terms of 5-year periods, the maternal mortality ratio declined from 417.7 in 1968-72 to 73.7 in 1988-92. Infection was the most common cause of death (59.8%), followed by cardiac disease (8.5%) and hemorrhage (8.5%). Infection related deaths were either due to septic abortion (75.7%) or puerperal sepsis (24.3%). While 73.9% of all deat…

Most studies of maternal mortality are hospital based. However, in developing countries, where many such deaths take place in the home, hospital statistics do not reflect the true extent of maternal mortality. Furthermore, the socioeconomic and demographic factors and health behavior affecting maternal mortality are rarely known. A study conducted in 1986 in South India demonstrates a new approach to investigating maternal mortality that combines the collection of information from hospital and health-facility records, field surveys, and case-control studies. The findings from this study indica…

Maternal mortality in Sweden has declined steeply over the past 50 years. The reasons for this gratifying trend have been analysed. A decreasing incidence of complications during pregnancy and delivery, together with a lower case fatality rate from complications have been found to account for the major part of the reduction in maternal mortality in Sweden. This has been achieved by improvements in obstetrical and antenatal care, by the introduction of antibiotics and blood transfusion, and by a favorable shift to more appropriate ages for reproduction.

This report reviews the experience of the Santa Clara County Maternal Mortality Study Committee, which continued its local activity after the termination of California state-supported study groups in 1970. A study of 36 maternal deaths among approximately 262,000 live births was compiled over a 13-year period, between 1971 and 1983, in a population group representative of much of California. Although based on a small population sample, the results indicate an imperative need for such reviews to improve the quality of clinical care and to develop significant statistical information on the incid…

Reference is made to pregnancy risks, including spontaneous abortion, prematurity, and foetal retardation, for women with haemodynamically important cardiopathies. The risk may be mitigated by high-continuity extended medical care in centres for cardio-angiopathies of women in pregnancy. Attention should be given in such centres not only to congenital and acquired cardiac defects, but to all circulatory disorders as well as to some diseases of the respiratory system.

All deaths of women of reproductive age notified in France over four months were the subject of an enquiry carried out through the post to the doctors who had written the certificates of death. The objective was to try to evaluate the true maternal mortality on a national scale. This enquiry was carried out on 4,102 female deaths and showed that 68 of these (1.6%) were in pregnant or puerperal women. 45 of these deaths were classified as maternal which was twice the number that showed up on the official statistics of the causes of death. On one hand the under notification--due to failure to re…
