Mild COVID-19 imprints a long-term inflammatory eicosanoid- and chemokine memory in monocyte-derived macrophages.

Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) drive the inflammatory response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and they are a major source of eicosanoids in airway inflammation. Here we report that MDM from SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals with mild disease show an inflammatory transcriptional and metabolic imprint that lasts for at least 5 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. MDM from convalescent SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals showed a downregulation of pro-resolving factors and an increased production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, particularly 5-lipoxygenase-derived leu

Maternal Hyperhomocysteinemia Produces Memory Deficits Associated with Impairment of Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity in Young Rats.

Maternal hyperhomocysteinemia (HCY) is a common pregnancy complication caused by high levels of the homocysteine in maternal and fetal blood, which leads to the alterations of the cognitive functions, including learning and memory. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of these alterations in a rat model of maternal HCY. The behavioral tests confirmed the memory impairments in young and adult rats following the prenatal HCY exposure. Field potential recordings in hippocampal slices demonstrated that the long-term potentiation (LTP) was significantly reduced in HCY rats. The whol

Predictive Control of the Mobile Robot under the Deep Long-Short Term Memory Neural Network Model.

At present, there is a phenomenon of network data packet loss in the trajectory tracking control system, which will degrade or even destabilize the system's performance. Therefore, this work first explains the theory of the deep long-short term memory (LSTM) neural network model, the kinematic model of mobile robots, and the trajectory tracking error model. The reasons for data packet loss in the control system are analyzed. Second, a prediction model based on the LSTM network is designed according to the theory mentioned above. Finally, the training effect of the LSTM model and the robot traj

Long-term diet-induced obesity does not lead to learning and memory impairment in adult mice.

Obesity arising from excessive dietary fat intake is a risk factor for cognitive decline, dementia and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Here, we studied the effect of long-term high-fat diet (HFD) (24 weeks) and return to normal diet (ND) on behavioral features, microglia and neurons in adult male C57BL/6J mice. Consequences of HFD-induced obesity and dietary changes on general health (coat appearance, presence of vibrissae), sensory and motor reflexes, learning and memory were assessed by applying a phenotypic assessment protocol, the Y maze and Morris Water Maze tes

CMV exposure drives long-term CD57+ CD4 memory T-cell inflation following allogeneic stem cell transplant.

Donor and recipient cytomegalovirus (CMV) serostatus correlate with transplant-related mortality that is associated with reduced survival following allogeneic stem cell transplant (SCT). Prior epidemiologic studies have suggested that CMV seronegative recipients (R-) receiving a CMV-seropositive graft (D+) experience inferior outcomes compared with other serostatus combinations, an observation that appears independent of viral reactivation. We therefore investigated the hypothesis that prior donor CMV exposure irreversibly modifies immunologic function after SCT. We identified a CD4+/CD57+/CD2

Visual and auditory verbal long-term memory in individuals who rely on augmentative and alternative communication.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies provide individuals who have complex communication needs with an effective means to communicate. Yet the effect of these technologies on long-term memory is unclear. In addition, little is known regarding the impact of learning modality on memory performance of individuals who rely on AAC. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of AAC technologies on the visual and auditory verbal long-term memory abilities of 12 young persons who relied on AAC and had intact cognitive abilities. Participants performed 2 verbal memory tasks

Risk for Alzheimer's disease: A review of long-term episodic memory encoding and retrieval fMRI studies.

Many risk factors have been identified that predict future progression to Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, clear links have yet to be made between these risk factors and how they affect brain functioning in early stages of AD. We conducted a narrative review and a quantitative analysis to better understand the relationship between nine categories of AD risk (i.e., brain pathology, genetics/family history, vascular health, head trauma, cognitive decline, engagement in daily life, late-life depression, sex/gender, and ethnoracial group) and task-evoked fMRI activity during episodic memory in c

Long-term changes in metabolic brain network drive memory impairments in rats following neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hypoxia and cerebral ischemia (HI) events are capable of triggering important changes in brain metabolism, including glucose metabolism abnormalities, which may be related to the severity of the insult. Using positron emission microtomography (microPET) with [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG), this study proposes to assess abnormalities of brain glucose metabolism in adult rats previously submitted to the neonatal HI model. We hypothesize that cerebral metabolic outcomes will be associated with cognitive deficits and magnitude of brain injury. METHODS: Seven-day-old rat

Portable Sleep Apnea Syndrome Screening and Event Detection Using Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network.

Obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is characterized by repeated airflow partial reduction or complete cessation due to upper airway collapse during sleep. OSAHS can induce frequent awake and intermittent hypoxia that is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular events. Full-channel Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for diagnosing OSAHS; however, this PSG evaluation process is unsuitable for home screening. To solve this problem, a measuring module integrating abdominal and thoracic triaxial accelerometers, a pulsed oximeter (SpO2) and an electrocardiogram sensor w

Closed-Loop Slow-Wave tACS Improves Sleep-Dependent Long-Term Memory Generalization by Modulating Endogenous Oscillations.

Benefits in long-term memory retention and generalization have been shown to be related to sleep-dependent processes, which correlate with neural oscillations as measured by changes in electric potential. The specificity and causal role of these oscillations, however, are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the potential for augmenting endogenous slow-wave (SW) oscillations in humans with closed-loop transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with an aim toward enhancing the consolidation of recent experiences into long-term memory. Sixteen (three female) participants were

Verbal long-term memory is enhanced by retrieval practice but impaired by prefrontal direct current stimulation.

Retrieval practice involves repeatedly testing a student during the learning experience, reliably conferring learning advantages relative to repeated study. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) has also been shown to confer learning advantages for verbal memory, though research is equivocal. The present study examined the effects of retrieval versus study practice with or without left dlPFC tDCS on verbal episodic memory. Participants (N = 150) experienced either retrieval practice or study practice, and active anodal, active cathoda

The Transcription Factor Runx2 Is Required for Long-Term Persistence of Antiviral CD8+ Memory T Cells.

During acute lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection, pathogen-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes undergo clonal expansion leading to viral clearance. Following this, the majority of pathogen-specific CD8+ T cells undergo apoptosis, leaving a small number of memory CD8+ T cells that persist long-term and provide rapid protection upon secondary infection. Whereas much is known about the cytokines and transcription factors that regulate the early effector phase of the antiviral CD8+ T cell response, the factors regulating memory T cell homeostasis and survival are not well understood. Anodal tDCS over the Primary Motor Cortex Facilitates Long-Term Memory Formation Reflecting Use-Dependent Plasticity.

Previous research suggests that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) modulates NMDA receptor dependent processes that mediate synaptic plasticity. Here we test this proposal by applying anodal versus sham tDCS while subjects practiced to flex the thumb as fast as possible (ballistic movements). Repetitive practice of this task has been shown to result in performance improvements that reflect use-dependent plasticity resulting from NMDA receptor mediated, long-term potentiation (LTP)-like processes. Using a double-blind within-subject cross-ov

RD antigen based nanovaccine imparts long term protection by inducing memory response against experimental murine tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: The absence of certain genomic loci that are present in most of the virulent strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis as well as lack of lasting memory responses are some of the major causes attributed to the non effectiveness of Bacille Calmette-Gue'rin (BCG) vaccine. Immunization schedules addressing these issues can offer better strategy for protection against tuberculosis. METHODS: The immunological responses evoked upon administration of archaeosome based antigen delivery system comprising T cell antigen, Rv3619c (an ESAT-6 family protein), has been assessed against experimental

Comparison of long-term humoral memory development after immunisation against Neisseria meningitidis B or diphtheria toxoid.

Since genome sequence data became available there has been a marked increase in number of protein antigens that have been suggested as prospective vaccine components against Neisseria meningitidis B (MenB). Few studies have addressed the mechanisms by which meningococcal vaccines generate and sustain immunological memory. The goal of this study was to compare the B-cell response (antibody-secreting cells [ASC], memory B cell and IgG) evoked by a MenB vaccine (VA-MENGOC-BC(®)) with the B-cell response to diphtheria toxoid (DT) induced by a successful vaccine (Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis [DTP])

Initial and long-term results of coronary angioplasty: a report from King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

UNLABELLED: PTCA is one of the treatments for coronary heart disease. But in Thailand, there is no available data on the long-term outcomes of patients who have undergone this procedure. To determine initial and long-term outcomes of patients who underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), patients who underwent PTCA from January 1996 to December 1997 were enrolled. The initial results were received from the PTCA registry. The follow-up data were collected from medical records, phone calls and mail. Three hundred and forty patients (male 68.8%) were enrolled. Mean age was

Long-term suppression in mice of the development of complementary memory storage sites: effect of a muscarinic antagonist.

Bitemporal injections of puromycin consistently induce amnesia of aversive maze-learning in mice when administered within 3 days of training. These bitemporal puromycin injections lose their amnestic effectiveness, if the latency between training and injection is extended beyond 6 days. Consistent with other evidence, we conclude that in our experimental paradigm, complementary memory storage sites normally develop in additional cerebral areas during the 6 days following training. Previous experiments have indicated that the central adrenergic system is critically involved in this process. We

Unsupervised, frequent and remote: A novel platform for personalised digital phenotyping of long-term memory in humans.

Long-term memory tests are commonly used to facilitate the diagnosis of hippocampal-related neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease due to their relatively high specificity and sensitivity to damage to the medial temporal lobes compared to standard commonly used clinical tests. Pathological changes in Alzheimer's disease start years before the formal diagnosis is made, partially due to testing too late. This proof-of-concept exploratory study aimed to assess the feasibility of introducing an unsupervised digital platform for continuous testing of long-term memory over long periods o

Loss of Function of Phosphodiesterase 11A4 Shows that Recent and Remote Long-Term Memories Can Be Uncoupled.

Systems consolidation is a process by which memories initially require the hippocampus for recent long-term memory (LTM) but then become increasingly independent of the hippocampus and more dependent on the cortex for remote LTM. Here, we study the role of phosphodiesterase 11A4 (PDE11A4) in systems consolidation. PDE11A4, which degrades cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), is preferentially expressed in neurons of CA1, the subiculum, and the adjacently connected amygdalohippocampal region. In male and female mice, deletion of PDE11A enhances remote

Genes Involved in Long-Term Memory Are Expressed in Testis of Cryptorchid Boys and Respond to GnRHa Treatment.

It has been known for many years that boys with unilateral or bilateral undescended testis (cryptorchidism) tend to have a low IQ, and those who belong to the high infertility risk (HIR) group perform less well at school than low infertility risk (LIR) patients. However, the molecular biological processes underlying this phenomenon are not understood. In this study, we report the outcome of testicular RNA profiling for genes involved in long-term memory formation. We analyzed the histology and the transcriptome of testicular biopsies from bilateral HIR cryptorchid boys, comparing those who rec
