The objective of this study was to assess changes in levels of clinical temporomandibular (TMD) pain in relation to phases of the menstrual cycle. TMD cases were 35 women not using oral contraceptives (OCs); 35 women using OCs; and 21 men. Controls were 35 normally cycling women without TMD or other chronic pains. Subjects kept daily diaries over three menstrual cycles, reporting average and worst pain, general and premenstrual symptoms. Data were subject-centered and de-trended using the residuals from a random-effects linear regression model. To test for cyclic variation, cycles were standar

Calcitonin has been shown to be a progesterone-regulated potential marker of the receptive endometrium in the rat and human. The present study was undertaken to immunohistochemically investigate the changes in calcitonin in the monkey uterus during the menstrual cycle and periimplantation period. Calcitonin immunostaining was primarily localized in the glandular epithelium on d 16, 20, and 25 of the menstrual cycle. During early pregnancy, calcitonin immunostaining was strongly observed in the glandular epithelium only on d 9 of pregnancy, the day before implantation. Since the high level of c

BACKGROUND: Several clinical conditions suggest an effect of sex steroids on glucose homeostasis in women. Studies examining this phenomenon have yielded controversial results.
METHODS: To investigate the effect of the menstrual cycle on insulin sensitivity, glucose effectiveness and acute insulin response to glucose using the tolbutamide-modified intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) during the follicular (day 8 +/- 1) and luteal (day 23 +/- 1) phases of the menstrual cycle, the authors recruited 12 healthy regularly menstruating women. All had fasting glucose concentration of < 100 mg/

Quantitative autoradiography employing the ETA selective ligand [125I]PD 151242 and the ETB selective ligand [125I]BQ3020 was used to assess the localization of ETA and ETB receptors in human uterus throughout the menstrual cycle. ETA and ETB receptors were present in endometrium and myometrium across the menstrual cycle. In myometrium, neither ETA nor ETB receptor density showed any detectable change across the menstrual cycle. ETA receptors were expressed in stroma throughout the endometrium and showed an increase in density in proliferative endometrium compared with secretory and menstrual

alpha-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) immunoreactivity (IR) was measured in the blood of 22 healthy women with normal ovulatory process in the early and late follicular (near to ovulation) phases and in the early luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Plasma alpha-MSH IR ranged from undetectable values to 81.3 pg/ml, the highest levels being found in the late follicular phase (15.52 +/- 4.16 pg/ml). In contrast, plasma ACTH IR was always detectable (range: 18.5-63.2 pg/ml), but its concentration did not differ significantly between the 3 phases of the me

Gastrointestinal (GI) functional indicators and symptoms across the menstrual cycle were examined in three groups of women: dysmenorrheic (n = 15), non-pill-taking nondysmenorrheic (n = 10), and nondysmenorrheic taking birth control pills (BCPs) (n = 9). Group assignment was based on the reported presence or absence of moderate to severe menstrual cramps in a GI Health Diary which subjects kept for two menstrual cycles. Stool consistencies and frequencies and GI symptoms were also recorded in this diary. Menstrual cycle phase significantly, p = .03, influenced stool consistencies for the sampl

Blood platelet receptors are widely used as peripheral models of central nervous system receptors, particularly in attempts to understand the biological basis of a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It is important to differentiate factors other than the primary disease process which may influence platelet receptors. One such potential factor is the menstrual cycle. In this study we have determined platelet high-affinity alpha 2-adrenoceptor binding, using the agonist ligand 3H-UK-14,304 and platelet aggregatory responses to adrenaline in 14 healthy young women, sampled on four

The authors have evaluated the pattern of plasma androgens in females from puberty to old age and in several pathological states. Androgen circulating levels were correlated to the development of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis during puberty, and analyzed in the different phases of the menstrual cycle in fertile women and during the menopausal period. Androgen plasma levels in patients with hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome, and infertility were examined and discussed for their etiopathological role and diagnostic significance.

Information on the relative activity and on the functional relationships between the acutely releasable (1st) and reserve (2nd) pools of pituitary LH during the course of the normal menstrual cycle was obtained via a 4 h LRF infusion (0.2 mug/min X 4 h). This was immediately followed by 3 pulses of LRF (10 mug at 2 h intervals) to assess further the size of the acutely releasable pool after activation of the reserve pool by the infusion. Our observations indicate that two functional pools of LH are present in all phases of the menstrual cycle and that comparative pool size or activity is influ

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that estradiol (E2) impacts mood as well as socioemotional and stress-related functioning in menstruating individuals. However, research in this area is limited by a preponderance of cross-sectional studies comparing psychological outcomes across menstrual phases that do not allow for conclusions to be made about E2's effects independent from progesterone.
METHODS: In the current longitudinal investigation of 23 naturally cycling women, the potential effects of E2 on affect, state self-esteem, irritability, emotion recognition accuracy, and reactivity to

This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the association between tinnitus and menstrual cycle disorders in premenopausal women. A total of 558 participants completed a comprehensive questionnaire covering demographics, tinnitus, and gynecological/obstetric history. The analysis investigated the correlation between tinnitus and various menstrual disorders, including dysmenorrhea (primary, secondary, or premenstrual syndrome), as well as different menstrual cycle patterns (regular, hypomenorrhea, menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea, or polymenorrhea). Among the participants, 33% reported experiencing

Endocannabinoids mediate cellular functions and their activity is controlled by a complex system of enzymes, membrane receptors and transport molecules. Endocannabinoids are present in endometrium, a cyclical regenerative tissue requiring tightly regulated cellular mechanisms for maturation. The objective of this study was to investigate the gene expression of key elements involved in the endocannabinoid system across the menstrual cycle. RNA was isolated from endometrial tissue and genome-wide gene expression datasets were generated using RNA-sequencing. An a priori set of 70 genes associated

PURPOSE: A single bout of aerobic or resistance exercise improves executive function. We sought to determine whether menstrual cycle variations in ovarian hormone concentrations differentially influence the expression and/or magnitude of a postexercise executive benefit.
METHODS: Eumenorrheic female participants completed 20-min single bouts of aerobic exercise (via cycle ergometer) at a moderate intensity (i.e., 80% of estimated lactate threshold) during the early follicular and midluteal phases of their menstrual cycle. Pre- and postexercise executive function was examined via antisaccades-

BACKGROUND: Rates of musculoskeletal injury differ substantially between the genders, with females more likely to experience conditions such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries than males in the same sports. Emerging evidence suggests a significant hormonal contribution. Most research has focused solely on how hormonal fluctuations affect connective tissue, but a direct link between hormonal shifts, ligamentous laxity, and ACL injury has not been borne out. There is also evidence to suggest that sex hormones can modulate the central nervous system, but how this affects neuromuscular c

Hippocampal volume has been shown to be sensitive to variations in estrogen and progesterone levels across rodents' estrous cycle. However, little is known about the covariation of hormone levels and brain structure in the course of the human menstrual cycle. Here, we examine this covariation with a multi-method approach that includes several brain imaging methods and hormonal assessments. We acquired structural and functional scans from 21 naturally cycling women on four time points during their cycles (early follicular phase, late follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase). Hormone blood
