An Examination of Impulsivity and Metacognitions in Adolescents with Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Disorders.

Trichotillomania (TTM), skin-picking disorder (SPD), and nail-biting (NB) are classified as Body-Focused Repetitive Disorders (BFRBDs), which share characteristics with both obsessive-compulsive and impulse control disorders. This study aimed to compare impulsivity, metacognitions, and clinical characteristics across BFRBDs. Ninety adolescents (aged 10-18 years) with BFRBDs and 40 healthy controls (HC) completed the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale-Child Version (RCADS-CV), the Metacognitions Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (MCQ-CA), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Br…

Group based metacognitive therapy for alcohol use disorder: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a severe clinical disorder, which has been associated with 5.3% of death worldwide. Although several treatments have been developed to improve AUD symptomatology, treatment effects were moderate, with a certain amount of patients displaying symptom deterioration after treatment termination. Moreover, outpatient treatment placements become increasingly scarce, thus necessitating more efficient treatment options. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of a newly invented, short, group bas

Role of Worry in Addiction: Implication of Metacognitive Beliefs and Type 2 Worry.

INTRODUCTION: According to the self-medication hypothesis, worriers use substances to cope with their symptoms; however, some published results have challenged this hypothesis. The aim of this study is to show if worry increases the risk of SUD when it is negatively appraised by negative metacognitive beliefs. METHOD: We recruited three samples: 68 patients with a severe AUD, 27 patients dependent on eating and 42 control participants. We used the Yale Food Addiction Scale-2, the Metacognitions Questionnaire-65, the UPPS-P Impulsive Behaviour Scale and the Anxiety Thoughts Inventory. RESULTS…

Metacognitive beliefs predict interpersonal problems in patients with social anxiety disorder.

Patients with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) typically report interpersonal problems, and these are important targets in treatment beyond soc … ating SAD. Two hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to explore change in metacognitions as predictors of change in interpersonal problems when controlling for change in social phobic cognitions and social anxiety. Change in metacognitions accounted for unique variance in interpersonal problems improvement beyond change in cognitions. …

Difficulties in emotion regulation: The role of repetitive negative thinking and metacognitive beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Using the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in both general population and clinical samples, metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking (i.e., rumination and worry) are associated with higher levels of emotion dysregulation. METHODS: 395 participants from the general population and 388 outpatients seeking psychological treatment were recruited. Emotion dysregulation, metacognitive beliefs, rumination, worry, anxiety, depression, personality disorders were assessed. ANOVA and Welch's tests, correlation and path analyses we

Examining the roles of metacognitive beliefs and maladaptive aspects of perfectionism in depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Metacognition and perfectionism are factors found to be associated with both anxiety and depression. A common component that underlies these factors is the influence of perseverance, or the tendency to continue a behaviour or thought even if it is no longer productive. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between metacognitive beliefs with maladaptive aspects of perfectionism (i.e. perseverance behaviours), and their relation to anxiety and depression. METHOD: Participants (n = 1033) completed six self-report questionnaires measuring metacognitive beliefs about…

Protective and Vulnerability Factors in Self-Esteem: The Role of Metacognitions, Brooding, and Resilience.

The aim of the current study was to explore protective (resilience) and vulnerability factors (dysfunctional metacognitions and brooding) for self-esteem. A total of 725 participants were included in a cross-sectional study. A path analysis revealed five paths to self-esteem. The three main paths were as follows: (1) symptoms -> metacognitions -> brooding -> self-esteem, (2) symptoms -> resilience -> self-esteem, and (3) a direct path from symptoms. The first path corresponds with the metacognitive model of psychopathology and suggests that triggers in the form of anxiety and depression sympto…

Differences between autogenous and reactive obsessions in terms of metacognitions and automatic thoughts.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions have been classified as autogenous obsessions and reactive obsessions on the basis of the cognitive theory of Lee and Kwon. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between autogenous groups (AG) and reactive groups (RG) in terms of metacognition and automatic thoughts, for the purpose of investigating the differences of cognitive appraisals. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-three patients diagnosed with OCD were included in the study as the patient group. A control group …

A Systematic Review of Metacognitive Differences Between Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia.

Clinicians often have difficulty distinguishing between various forms of dementia to achieve a correct diagnosis. Little research has been done to examine whether awareness of one's cognitive deficits, or metacognitive monitoring, might differ between dementia diagnoses, thereby providing an additional means of differentiating between dementia subtypes. We review articles examining metacognitive comparisons between two of the most common dementia subtypes: Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. Greater monitoring deficits were apparent in frontotemporal dementia than in Alzheimer's d

Selective attention deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder: the role of metacognitive processes.

While initial studies supported the hypothesis that cognitive characteristics that capture cognitive resources act as underlying mechanisms in memory deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the influence of those characteristics on selective attention has not been studied, yet. In this study, we examined the influence of cognitive self-consciousness (CSC), rumination and worrying on performance in selective attention in OCD and compared the results to a depressive and a healthy control group. We found that 36 OCD and 36 depressive participants were impaired in selective attention in c

Reward sensitivity, decisional bias, and metacognitive deficits in cocaine drug addiction.

OBJECTIVES: The present research explored the effect of reward sensitivity bias and metacognitive deficits on substance use disorder (SUD) i … GT. RESULTS: The SUD group was associated with a poorer performance on the IGT and a dysfunctional metacognition ability (unrealistic representation). An increase in the reward sensitivity (higher BAS, BAS reward responsiveness, and BAS reward) was observed in the SUD group compared with the control group and explained (through a regression analysis) the main …

Complementary group Metacognitive Training (MCT) reduces delusional ideation in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Symptom reduction under antipsychotic agents is incomplete for most schizophrenia patients. In order to enhance outcome, cognitive approaches are increasingly adopted as add-on interventions. The present study aimed to determine the efficacy of group Metacognitive Training (MCT), which targets cognitive biases putatively involved in the pathogenesis of delusions. METHODS: A two-center, randomized, assessor-blind, controlled trial between MCT group training and cognitive training was carried out (ISRCTN95205723). A total of 150 in- and outpatients with DSM diagnoses of schizophreni

Metacognitive training in schizophrenia: from basic research to knowledge translation and intervention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There has been a marked increase in the study of cognitive biases in schizophrenia, which has in part been stimulated by encouraging results with cognitive-behavioral interventions in the disorder. We summarize new evidence on cognitive biases thought to trigger or maintain positive symptoms in schizophrenia and present a new therapeutic intervention. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies indicate that patients with paranoid schizophrenia jump to conclusions, show attributional biases, share a bias against disconfirmatory evidence, are overconfident in errors, and display problem

Encoding, metacognitive, auto attributional processes and memory in mentally retarded adolescents.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the improvement of the capability to retain sets of names after a training programme administered to 38 (20 men, 18 women) mentally retarded adolescents aged 14-19 years (mean IQ = 57) who underwent training for 31 weeks. A single-case research design was used because the subjects varied in age, IQ, and pathological origin of retardation. Data confirm the results of a 1994 study and demonstrate the utility of systematic, diversified training in improving information-processing strategies on the one hand, and raising meta-mnemonic and autoattributional awar

Clinical and cognitive insight in schizophrenia and their relationship with neurocognition and metacognition: a narrative review.

Impaired insight in schizophrenia is consistently associated with poorer treatment adherence, more frequent hospitalization, and worse functional outcomes, yet the cognitive mechanisms that account for impaired insight remain incompletely specified. The neurocognitive model has long been the dominant explanatory framework but accounts for only a small fraction of the variance in clinical insight. This review synthesizes evidence on clinical and cognitive insight in relation to neurocognition and metacognition, identifies integrative metacognition as the principal explanatory bridge between bas…

Metacognition and Its Relationship With Orbitofrontal Cortex and Thalamus Volumes in Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

PURPOSE: The study aims to explore the relationship between orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and thalamus volumes and metacognition in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). By analyzing structural MRI data and metacognitive measures, it investigates how brain volume variations correlate with dysfunctional beliefs and OCD symptoms. METHOD: The study consisted of 20 patients with OCD and 20 healthy controls. Yale-Brown Obsession Compulsion Scale (Y-BOCS), Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D), and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) were administered to OC…

Metacognition, rumination and suicidal ideation: An experience sampling test of the self-regulatory executive function model.

A relationship between rumination and suicidal ideation is well-evidenced. A role for thought suppression has also been suggested but under-explored. The present study assessed the relative contribution of rumination and a range of thought control strategies in the understanding of suicidal ideation, within the theoretical framework of the self-regulatory executive function (S-REF) model (Wells & Matthews, 2015). Twenty-four participants who had experienced suicidal ideation in the last two months completed trait-level measures of metacognitive beliefs and momentary sampling measures of though

Relationships between test anxiety and metacognition in Chinese young adults with and without specific learning disabilities.

The influence of test anxiety on academic difficulties has been investigated in typically developing students, but the mechanism underlying the influence remains unclear, especially for those with specific learning disabilities (SpLDs). This study examined the role of metacognition in the relationship between test anxiety and literacy difficulties among Chinese typically developing adolescents as well as those who have been identified as having an SpLD and significant literacy difficulties (i.e., typically functioning SpLD) and without significant literacy difficulties (i.e., high-functioning …
