The ultrastructure of the dog pineal gland from the first postnatal day to the seventh month is described. In the first postnatal stages, pineal parenchyma only shows immature proliferative cells with abundant cytoplasmic glycogen. Nerve fibers are seen in the pineal connective tissue spaces. The differentiation of the dog pineal cell types begins in the first postnatal week. Both pinealocytes and pigmented cells are first seen on the fourth postnatal day. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that lesions of sarcoptic mange in swine, pass through 3 different stages. During the first 3 weeks of infestation, adult female mites tunnel into the epidermis. During the following 3 or 4 weeks, the surface openings of these tunnels become covered with keratinized epidermal crust which increases in thickness. After 7 weeks of infestation, the crust falls off, the tunnel openings become apparent again and most of the mites vacate these tunnels.

Lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) affect cells of the conjunctiva in the absence of clinical eye findings. Consequently conjunctiva was added to skin, rectal mucosa, and peripheral blood lymphocytes as a biopsy site for electron microscopic examination in suspected LSD. The abnormally stored substrates in LSD are the result of diminished lysosomal enzyme activity. Thirty one intraocular lenses removed from human eyes 2 months to 30 years after implantation were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Fibrinoid necrosis was induced in the pulmonary arteries of five male Wistar albino rats by feeding them on a diet adulterated by the addition of 0.07% ground Crotalaria spectabilis seeds by weight.
