A standard microwave oven has been used to sterilize catheters used for intermittent self-catheterization. Catheters were incubated for 60 minutes in a suspension of microorganisms isolated from the urine of patients with urinary tract infections. Each catheter was removed from the suspension, placed in a paper bag and microwaved for 0 to 30 minutes. A control catheter was not microwaved. Microwave radiation decreased specific camphor binding to a membrane fraction of rat epithelium but not to a Triton X-100 extract of this fraction. Inhibition of the ligand binding did not depend on the modulation frequency of the microwave field in the region 1-100 Hz and was not a linear function of specific absorption rate (SAR). The decreased ligand binding was due to a shedding or release of the specific camphor-binding protein from the membrane into solution. It is highly probable that several other membrane proteins may be shed into solution during microwave exposure.

The oxyhemoglobin saturation (HbO2) of single red blood cells within tumor microvessels (diameter: 3-12 micrometers) of DS-Carcinosarcoma was studied using a cryophotometric micromethod. In untreated control tumors (mean tissue temperature approx. 35 degrees C) the measured values scattered over the whole saturation range from zero to 100 sat. %, the mean being 51 sat. %. Associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) enables resection of extensive colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) by inducing rapid hypertrophy of the future liver remnant (FLR). However, the classical approach is often associated with significant morbidity, particularly in patients with compromised liver parenchyma. BACKGROUND: Early stage liver cancer is often treated with hepatic resection or transplantation for curative intent. Microwave ablation (MWA) is often performed in patients who are poor surgical candidates, patients with limited multifocal disease, disease close to hepatic vasculature, but can also be performed with curative intent in case of small lesions.
