Complete molar pregnancy in postmenopausal women.

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is an abnormal proliferation of trophoblastic tissue during pregnancy. It is a disease of reproducti … ,000 mIU/ml suggested the diagnosis of CHM. In view of postmenopausal status and future risk of postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, we performed a total abdominal hysterectomy. Uterus was 20 cm × 15 cm × 15 cm filled with cystic, grapes such as vesicles. Microscopic examination demonstrated generalized trophoblastic proliferation with hydropi …

Early second-trimester molar tooth sign.

Molar tooth sign (MTS) is pathognomonic for Joubert syndrome (JS) and related disorders. We report a case in which MTS was suspected in an 'at risk' patient at 16 weeks' gestation by sonography and at 18 weeks by additional ultrasound. It was then confirmed at 20 weeks by MRI. A molecular diagnosis of JS was established after termination of the pregnancy. As genetic testing may not be feasible in JS, the ability to identify MTS sonographically as early as possible is important for affected families.

[Predictive factors of third molar eruption].

INTRODUCTION: We studied the prognosis of upper and lower third molar evolution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight patients were included after a clinical examination, dental casts, panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiographs on inclusion (T1) and two years after (T2). Five parameters were studied: retromolar space (RMS) between the third molar (M3) and the anterior ridge of the ramus; RMS/M3 crown diameter ratio, distances (PTV-M(1)) and (X(i)-Mi(2)); and third molar angle with occlusal plane. RESULTS: They were noted at T1 and T2. The gain of retromolar space from T1 to T2 reached 1.…

Ectopic molar pregnancy: a rare entity.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic molar pregnancy is a rare occurrence and consequently not often considered as a diagnostic possibility. In this article, an attempt was made to stress on the need for histopathological examination and follow up of every case of ectopic pregnancy. This was substantiated with the help of a case report. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old gravida 4, para 3, pregnant woman with a 7-week history of amenorrhea attended hospital with abdominal pain. Per vaginal examination revealed a tender left adnexal mass measuring 4x4 cm and on ultrasonography there was a live fetus correspond…

Fas-FasL system in molar pregnancy.

PROBLEM: Hydatidiform mole (molar pregnancy) is the commonest form of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease, with the risk of undergoing malignant transformation. The molecular pathway leading to pathogenesis and progression of molar pregnancy is barely understood. The study focuses on Fas/FasL system which represents one of the main apoptotic pathways controlling placental morphogenesis. METHOD OF STUDY: Placental tissues from 52 patients with complete hydatidiform moles (CHMs) and 55 age-matched controls were examined for Fas and FasL expression using immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence an…

Mandibular molar with five root canals.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the importance of knowledge of the internal anatomy of root canals for the success of endodontic treatment. Lack of knowledge of anatomic variations and their characteristics in different teeth has been pointed out as one of the main causes of endodontic therapy failure. In this report, the authors describe the endodontic treatment of a mandibular first molar with five root canals, evaluate the rate of occurrence of this number of canals, and discuss the importance of their identification and treatment.

Molar-incisor-hypomineralisation: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Molar-Incisor-Hypomineralisation (MIH) is a qualitative defect of 1-4 first permanent molars with or without the maxillary and mandibular permanent incisors. It seems to have been recognised first in the 1970s and prevalence varies between 2.8% and 25%, dependent upon the study. METHODS: The dental literature was searched using a number of key terms entered into MEDLINE, the reference list of each paper as located was examined for further papers that had been missed in the initial search. RESULTS: The review of the literature showed that teeth that are affected indicate a systemi…

A case of molar ectopic pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the occurrence of molar pregnancy in tubal ectopic pregnancy. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Outpatient clinic. PATIENT(S): A 27-year-old woman. INTERVENTION(S): Salpingectomy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Molar ectopic pregnancy. RESULT(S): Ectopic partial molar pregnancy. CONCLUSION(S): Molar pregnancy can occur in ectopic pregnancy. Molar pregnancy clinically mimics normal tubal ectopic pregnancy.

Two cases of molar root resorption.

The presence of unerupted teeth in close proximity to adjacent teeth can cause root resorption. The third molars and mandibular premolars are the most frequent teeth to be impacted and the relationship between impacted teeth causing root resorption of adjacent teeth has been well documented, but it is surprising how few studies have analysed the incidence of root resorption in these cases. This paper discusses two patients who have undergone molar root resorption due to adjacent unerupted impacted teeth.

Nerve damage and third molar removal.

The surgical removal of lower third molars endangers both the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves. Patients sustaining an injury to either of these nerves must be managed correctly, and this requires a diagnosis of the injury type and regular monitoring of the recovery of sensation. Surgical intervention for a damaged inferior alveolar nerve is not usually indicated but may be undertaken: if the nerve is completely divided and the severed ends are misaligned; if a bony fragment has compressed the mandibular canal; or if the patient suffers from persistent neuropathic pain. In contrast, after …

Therapeutic choices in the molar region.

Treatment of the damaged molar often presents a set of challenges unique to the posterior dentition. Traditional dental treatments continue to be refined to improve the prognosis when treating the posterior dentition. Daily treatment-planning decisions include whether to treat with conventional dental or implant therapeutic approaches, and involve consideration of local host factors as well as limitations in specific therapeutic approaches. This article will review some of the factors to consider in these treatment-planning decisions.

Eruption process of the second molar.

The second molar is located at the distal of the first molar, and we must be aware of its stage of development when we plan to move the first molar distally. Few researchers have investigated the development of second molars. The purpose of this study was to observe the eruption process of the maxillary and mandibular second molars by using 238 panoramic radiographs. The developmental stages of the second molar were divided into four stages: the whole crown calcified = stage 1; beginning root formation = stage 2; initial formation of the radicular bifurcation = stage 3; and the root length is …

Gustatory function after third molar extraction.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the severity and time course of taste changes after extraction of all 4 third molars. STUDY DESIGN: Taste function in 17 patients was measured before third molar surgery and at 1 month and 6 months after surgery. Two tests were administered: a whole-mouth, above-threshold test in which subjects sipped, expectorated, and then rated the intensities and identified the taste qualities of various solutions, and a localized test in which subjects rated and identified solutions painted with cotton swabs on different oral sites. RESULTS: Intensit…

Familial peripartum cardiomyopathy after molar pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The potential complications of molar pregnancy are numerous and well defined, but associated peripartum cardiomyopathy has not been reported. CASE: A 16-year-old primigravida with a family history of peripartum cardiomyopathy requiring cardiac transplantation underwent suction curettage of a complete mole at 12 weeks' gestation. Three months after evacuation, she developed congestive heart failure. Radionuclide ventriculography demonstrated an ejection fraction of 30%, echocardiography revealed enlargement and ventricular hypokinesis, and a myocardial biopsy specimen contained hyp…
