Comparative genomics and adult-female transcriptomics prioritize physiological candidate pathways in the aquatic acentropine moth Paracymoriza distinctalis.

Freshwater-associated life histories are rare in Lepidoptera, and the physiological systems accompanying them remain poorly resolved. We integrated adult-female whole-body RNA-seq from Paracymoriza distinctalis (n = 3) and three terrestrial crambids (n = 3, 3, and 2) with focused comparative genomics to prioritize testable candidate pathways. Adult-female expression-biased genes were enriched for muscle contraction and myofibril assembly, carbohydrate and nucleotide-related metabolism, response to stimulus, and regulation of signal transduction. Protein-interaction analysis further identified

Fungicide and climate warming drive bioenergetic reconfiguration across the life cycle of the European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana.

Understanding how multiple stressors interact is essential for predicting insect performance under global change. Although pesticide toxicity is well-established to be temperature-dependent, the physiological mechanisms underlying these interactions remain poorly understood. Insects often display stage- and sex-specific sensitivities to environmental pressures, suggesting complex energetic trade-offs across their life cycles. Copper-based fungicides, such as Bordeaux mixture, are widely used to control fungal diseases but can stress non-target insects. Here, we experimentally examined how Bord

Genomic and Functional Characterization of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci-Specific Bacteriophages in the Galleria mellonella Wax Moth Larvae Model.

Phages are naturally occurring viruses that selectively kill bacterial species without disturbing the individual's normal flora, averting the collateral damage of antimicrobial usage. The safety and the effectiveness of phages have been mainly confirmed in the food industry as well as in animal models. In this study, we report on the successful isolation of phages specific to Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci, including Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) and Enterococcus faecalis from sewage samples, and demonstrate their efficacy and safety for VREfm infection in the greater wax moth Galleria mellon

Development and evaluation of the Galleria mellonella (greater wax moth) infection model to study Brucella host-pathogen interaction.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Brucella. These pathogens cause long-lasting infections, a process in which Brucella modifications in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and envelope lipids reduce pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) recognition, thus hampering innate immunity activation. In vivo models are essential to investigate bacterial virulence, mice being the most used model. However, ethical and practical considerations impede their use in high-throughput screening studies. Although lacking the complexity of the mammalian immune system,

Influence of within-orchard trap placement on catch of codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in sex pheromone-treated orchards.

The influence of trap placement on catches of codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., was examined in a series of studies conducted in orchards treated with Isomate-C Plus sex pheromone dispensers. Mark-recapture tests with sterilized moths released along the interface of pairs of treated and untreated apple and pear plots found that significantly more male but not female moths were recaptured on interception traps placed in the treated plots. In a second test, significantly higher numbers of wild male and female moths were caught on interception traps placed in treated versus untreated plots within

alpha-Crystallin protein cognates in eggs of the moth, Plodia interpunctella: possible chaperones for the follicular epithelium yolk protein.

alpha-Crystallin protein cognates were found in germ cells of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Shirk and Zimowska, 1997). A cDNA clone of 674 bp with a single open reading frame was isolated for a 25,000 molecular weight polypeptide member of this family, alpha CP25, and a single transcript of approximately 700 bp was found in the ovary of vitellogenic females. Both the DNA sequence and predicted amino acid sequence showed considerable homology with the embryonic lethal gene, l(2)efl, in Drosophila melanogaster. In addition to the sequence for l(2)efl, the predicted amino acid seque

Solar ultraviolet-B radiation alters the attractiveness of Arabidopsis plants to diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella L.): impacts on oviposition and involvement of the jasmonic acid pathway.

Solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) can have large impacts on the interactions between plants and herbivorous insects. Several studies have documented effects of UV-B-induced changes in plant tissue quality on the feeding performance of insect larvae. In contrast, the effects of UV-B-induced plant responses on the behavior of adult insects have received little attention. We carried out a series of field and glasshouse experiments using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana L. and the crucifer-specialist insect Plutella xylostella L. (diamondback moth) to investigate the effects of UV-B on natu

Potential biocontrol efficacy of native Beauveria bassiana against diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) in cabbage.

Cabbage experiences substantial yield reductions due to diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) infestation. Recurrent use of insecticides has led to insecticide resistance, necessitating the development of sustainable biocontrol strategies. This study involves the morpho-molecular characterization of Beauveria bassiana isolates from diverse locations. B. bassiana NBAIR-Bb5a exhibited the rapid mycelial growth (87.43 mm) with highest conidial germination rate (94.43%), and notable insecticidal enzymatic activities (chitinase, protease and lipase). Moth Communities Reveal High Stability Despite Ongoing Compositional Shifts Over Five Years Following Hurricane Disturbance.

Extreme climatic events are expected to increase in frequency and severity under climate change, with lasting consequences for ecological communities worldwide. Global insect declines have raised concerns for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem stability, as shifts in insect communities can trigger cascading effects across trophic levels. Yet insect responses to large-scale disturbances remain poorly understood, particularly in tropical forests where long-term datasets are scarce and taxonomic knowledge is limited. We examined the response trajectories and stability of moth communities in

Quercetin stimulates an accelerated burst of oviposition-based reproductive strategy in codling moth controlled by juvenile hormone signaling pathway.

The advantageous characteristics of invasive pests, particularly their ability to reproduce and adapt to the environment, have been observed. However, it remains unclear what specific inherent superiority enables fruit pests to successfully invade and dominate in interactions with other species. In this study, we report that Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus), a notorious invasive pest of pome fruits and walnuts globally, employs unique reproductive strategies in response to quercetin, a plant compound in host fruits. By monitoring adult dynamics and fruit infestation rates, we observed a competitive

Function and pharmacology of glutamate-gated chloride channel exon 9 splice variants from the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella.

Glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCls) are found only in invertebrates and mediate fast inhibitory neurotransmission. The structural and functional diversity of GluCls are produced through assembly of multiple subunits and via posttranscriptional alternations. Alternative splicing is the most common way to achieve this in insect GluCls and splicing occurs primarily at exons 3 and 9. As expression pattern and pharmacological properties of exon 9 alternative splices in invertebrate GluCls remain poorly understood, the cDNAs encoding three alternative splice variants (9a, 9b and 9c) of the Px

Changes occurred in the testes and DNA pattern of males wax moth (Galleria mellonella) first generation as a result of irradiation of their parents.

Nowadays, the sterile insect technique is broadly used as a pest control measure. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the alteration occurred in testes and DNA pattern as an effect of inherited sterility. Full grown pupae of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella were irradiated with 80 and 160 Gy of γ irradiation. The size of the testes was decreased by increasing of γ irradiation dose. Also, the size of the testes was decreased in F 1 males comparing with the size of the testes of both the parents and the untreated control. The effects of γ rays on the DNA patterns of adult

Transcriptional regulation of de novo biosynthesis of cyanogenic glucosides throughout the life-cycle of the burnet moth Zygaena filipendulae (Lepidoptera).

The six-spotted burnet moth Zygaena filipendulae (Lepidoptera) utilize the two cyanogenic glucosides (CNglcs) linamarin and lotaustralin as deterrents against predators throughout the entire life cycle. CNglcs can be hydrolyzed and bioactivated by β-glucosidases, resulting in the release of toxic hydrogen cyanide. CNglcs are retained through metamorphosis, probably involved in mating communication, and transferred during mating from the male to the female as a nuptial gift. CNglcs can be biosynthesized de novo by Z. filipendulae larvae, but may also be sequestered from their food plant Lotus c

Odorant receptors from the light brown apple moth (Epiphyas postvittana) recognize important volatile compounds produced by plants.

Moths recognize a wide range of volatile compounds, which they use to locate mates, food sources, and oviposition sites. These compounds are recognized by odorant receptors (OR) located within the dendritic membrane of sensory neurons that extend into the lymph of sensilla, covering the surface of insect antennae. We have identified 3 genes encoding ORs from the tortricid moth, Epiphyas postvittana, a pest of horticulture. Like Drosophila melanogaster ORs, they contain 7 transmembrane helices with an intracellular N-terminus, an orientation in the plasma membrane opposite to that of classical
