Retinal adaptation to object motion.

Due to fixational eye movements, the image on the retina is always in motion, even when one views a stationary scene. When an object moves within the scene, the corresponding patch of retina experiences a different motion trajectory than the surrounding region. Certain retinal ganglion cells respond selectively to this condition, when the motion in the cell's receptive field center is different from that in the surround. Here we show that this response is strongest at the very onset of differential motion, followed by gradual adaptation with a time course of several seconds. Different subregio…

The extra-retinal motion aftereffect.

Repetitive eye movements are known to produce motion aftereffect (MAE) when made to track a moving stimulus. Explanations typically centre on the retinal motion created in the peripheral visual field by the eye movement. This retinal motion is thought to induce perceived motion in the central test, either through the interaction between peripheral MAE and central target or by adaptation of mechanisms sensitive to the relative motion created between centre and surround. Less attention has been paid to possible extra-retinal contributions to MAE following eye movement. Prolonged eye movement lea…

Motion deblurring in human vision.

Under normal viewing conditions we are little conscious of blur in moving objects, despite the persistence of vision. Moving objects look more blurred in brief than in long exposures, suggesting an active mechanism for suppressing motion blur. To see whether blur suppression would improve visual discrimination of objects, we measured blur discrimination thresholds for moving Gaussian-blurred edges and bars. The observer's task was to decide which of two moving stimuli, presented successively, was the more blurred. It is known that for stationary objects the just-noticeable difference in blur i…

Early motion after wrist surgery.

This article reviews general considerations for therapists when initiating early motion after wrist surgery. Various early range of motion techniques and splinting are discussed in detail for the radiocarpal joint and distal radioulnar joint.

Asian hypersusceptibility to motion sickness.

A rotating optokinetic drum was used in three laboratory studies to test the hypothesis that Asian subjects are hypersusceptible to motion sickness. The results of the first study showed that Chinese women compared to European-American and African-American women experienced significantly more severe symptoms of motion sickness and greater disturbance of normal gastric myoelectric activity. A second study yielded similar results using American-born children of Asian parents. The results of a third study using Chinese men and women were similar and showed a significant increase in vasopressin du…

Motion perception in optic neuropathy.

We tested motion perception in 15 eyes of 13 patients with optic neuropathy. Eleven of the eyes had optic neuritis. The motion perception paradigm tested subjects' ability to discriminate the direction of a global coherent motion signal amid varying levels of background noise. The results showed defective motion processing in eight of the 15 eyes. This defect was not due to low visibility (poor spatial resolution), since 11 of the 15 eyes had Snellen acuities of 20/20 or better. Neither was impaired motion perception due to decreased luminance sensitivity, since attenuating the display signal …

Motion sickness and equilibrium ataxia.

In order to know the relationship between motion sickness and equilibrium ataxia, we performed Graybiel's ataxia test battery on 10 normal subjects: 1) before donning goggles which reversed the optical image horizontally and vertically; 2) while wearing the goggles and walking; and 3) after walking as long as possible up to 90 min. Horizontal reversal of vision resulted in a statistically significant decrease in the score for all the closed-eyes tests and one open-eyes test performed during walking and after walking, respectively. In contrast, walking while wearing vertical reversing goggles p…

Vertebrobasilar ischemia after neck motion.

BACKGROUND: Vertebrobasilar ischemic strokes may occur after chiropractic manipulation of the cervical spine or, less often, after spontaneous and abrupt head movement. SUMMARY OF REVIEW: We describe three such cases of vertebrobasilar ischemic strokes and review 36 other reported cases. CONCLUSIONS: We give evidence that 1) the population at risk cannot be identified a priori in the vast majority of cases; 2) symptoms may develop after many uneventful manipulations; 3) clinical syndromes consist of occipital lobe (5%), cerebellar (8%), locked-in (8%), Wallenberg's (28%), other brain stem (4

[Neurologic aspects of motion sickness].

To study the function of the nervous system in motion disease, 48 persons with low stability of the vestibular apparatus in response to accelerations induced by body rotation within two planes underwent clinico-neurologic and neurophysiological examinations. It has been established that in the second grade motion disease, there appears disseminated neurological micro-symptomatology which in 93% of the test subjects with the third degree disease becomes evident enough. It is accompanied by vegetovascular lability and transitory asthenia. The initial neurological and psychophysiological characte…

Motion-deblurring in human vision.

If photographs are taken of moving objects at slow shutter speeds the images of the objects are blurred. In human vision, however, we are not normally conscious of blur from moving objects despite the fact that the temporal response of the photoreceptors is sluggish. It has been suggested that there are motion-deblurring mechanisms specifically to aid the visual system in the analysis of the shape of retinally moving targets. Models of motion deblurring have been influenced by the finding that certain very precise spatial pattern discriminations are unaffected by motion. An example is vernier …

Catecholaminergic influences on motion sickness.

The evidence for possible roles of catecholamines in motion sickness is reviewed. l-Dopa is implicated in that it is the precursor to catecholaminergic neurotransmitters. Dopamine may have a role in stimulating motion sickness, though much basic information is lacking. Epinephrine may have a stimulatory role, since anatomical, pharmacological and physiological evidence is consistent with such a role. Norepinephrine probably inhibits motion sickness, as indicated by anatomical, physiological and pharmacological evidence. Information is missing that is critical to the understanding of the roles …

Transdermal scopolamine in motion sickness.

Motion sickness is a common clinical malady. Until recently, the use of scopolamine, the drug of choice for the treatment of motion-induced nausea and vomiting, has been sometimes associated with a variety of unacceptable side effects. These side effects could result from the unpredictable blood levels attained with oral dosage (pulse delivery). A new system of drug delivery, the transdermal therapeutic system (TTS)--Transderm-V--has been developed. The TTS delivers scopolamine across the skin at a constant rate. This permits a drug with a very short half life to be administered over prolonged…

Analogue models of motion perception.

An object moving in discrete spatial jumps is difficult to distinguish from a continuously moving object, provided the time between jumps is not too great. The extent of this perceived continuity may be measured by probing the perceived spatial location at times between the target jumps, by either a vernier alignment or a stereoscopic technique. As the time between jumps increase the accuracy of spatial interpolation falls, until finally the object is seen only at its actual spatial locations. These results can be analysed in the frequency domain by treating the signal for apparent motion as t…

Joint motion limitation in newborns.

Fifty neonates were evaluated and followed for 2 years with attention to the passive range of joint motion. Passive range of motion was symmetrical throughout this period. Only the hips were noted to have persistent contractures in flexion and external rotation during these 2 years. Such deformities of the hip make judgements about anteversion in infancy difficult. They also help explain the peculiarity of the lordotic, externally rotated gait seen initially in many toddlers.
