Use of a motion sickness history questionnaire for prediction of simulator sickness.

This research assessed the usefulness of the Motion History Questionnaire (MHQ) for the prediction of simulator sickness, a form of motion sickness experienced by pilots training in ground-based flight simulators. Four MHQ scoring keys were compared: (1) the original MHQ key which had been validated on a sample of U.S. Navy student pilots exposed to Coriolis forces, (2 and 3) two keys which had been validated on a sample of civilian college students exposed to simulated ship motions, and (4) a simulator sickness key empirically derived in the present research and cross-validated. Navy and Mari

Evaluating proxies for motion sickness in rodent.

Motions sickness (MS) occurs when the brain receives conflicting sensory signals from vestibular, visual and proprioceptive systems about a person's ongoing position and/or motion in relation to space. MS is typified by symptoms such as nausea and emesis and implicates complex physiological aspects of sensations and sensorimotor reflexes. Use of animal models has been integral to unraveling the physiological causality of MS. The commonly used rodents (rat and mouse), albeit lacking vomiting reflex, reliably display phenotypic behaviors of pica (eating of non-nutritive substance) and conditione

Amplitude and Temporal Dynamics of Motion Sickness.

The relationship between the amplitude of motion and the accumulation of motion sickness in time is unclear. Here, we investigated this relationship at the individual and group level. Seventeen participants were exposed to four oscillatory motion stimuli, in four separate sessions, separated by at least 1 week to prevent habituation. Motion amplitude was varied between sessions at either 1, 1.5, 2, or 2.5 ms-2. Time evolution was evaluated within sessions applying: an initial motion phase for up to 60 min, a 10-min rest, a second motion phase up to 30 min to quantify hypersensitivity and lastl

Severe motion sickness in infants and children.

INTRODUCTION: Susceptibility to severe motion sickness has not been well described in the pediatric population, particularly in very young children. This study aimed to describe and evaluate risk factors and treatment responses in a group of children with severe motion sickness, including infants and toddlers. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients less than 18 years of age seen in our pediatric vestibular program for evaluation of motion sickness over a 6-year period. RESULTS: A total of 23 patients with motion sickness were identified. Age of onset ranged from 0 to 15 yea

Motion sickness: more than nausea and vomiting.

Motion sickness is a complex syndrome that includes many features besides nausea and vomiting. This review describes some of these factors and points out that under normal circumstances, many cases of motion sickness go unrecognized. Motion sickness can occur during exposure to physical motion, visual motion, and virtual motion, and only those without a functioning vestibular system are fully immune. The range of vulnerability in the normal population varies about 10,000 to 1. Sleep deprivation can also enhance susceptibility. Systematic studies conducted in parabolic flight have identified ve

Motion sickness in rally car co-drivers.

BACKGROUND: Car sickness is a frequent and potentially disabling problem, commonly related to a theory of sensory conflict, in particular visuo-vestibular, and between actual and anticipated sensory signals. This study aimed to evaluate predictors of motion sickness (MS) in rally car co-drivers exposed to various accelerations. METHODS: The subjects were 85 rally co-drivers (21 women) who filled in a questionnaire investigating MS symptoms in 4 situations: 1) special stages (competition itself); 2) special stages reconnaissance; 3) reading a book in the car; and 4) rear-seat passenger. The ma

Vestibular functions in motion sickness susceptible individuals.

There exists no functional guide that can serve as a diagnostic tool for individual susceptibility to motion sickness (MS). We evaluated vestibular system functioning via a caloric test (which assesses functioning of the superior vestibular nerve) and the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) test (which assesses inferior vestibular nerve functioning) in 20 MS susceptible and 20 nonsusceptible individuals. Susceptibility to MS was determined by self-declaration and with MS susceptibility questionnaire and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS). We found statistically significant differences for s

Performance and autonomic responses during motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate how motion sickness, triggered by an optokinetic drum, affects short-term memory performance and to explore autonomic responses to perceived motion sickness. BACKGROUND: Previous research has found that motion sickness decreases performance, but it is not known how short-term memory in particular is affected. METHOD: Thirty-eight healthy participants performed a listening span test while seated in a rotating optokinetic drum. Measurements of motion sickness, performance, heart rate, skin conductance, blood volume pulse, and pupil size were p

Modafinil as a potential motion sickness countermeasure.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness adversely affects military air and sea operations. Medications help prevent motion sickness but are frequently associated with side effects. Better medications or combinations of medications are needed. Dextroamphetamine has documented anti-motion sickness effects but also has a potential for abuse. Modafinil is a relatively new central nervous system stimulant that has none of the drawbacks of dextroamphetamine, but has not been evaluated for the treatment of motion sickness. METHODS: This double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the anti-motion sickness

Space motion sickness: incidence, etiology, and countermeasures.

Space motion sickness is experienced by 60% to 80% of space travelers during their first 2 to 3 days in microgravity and by a similar proportion during their first few days after return to Earth. Space motion sickness symptoms are similar to those in other forms of motion sickness; they include: pallor, increased body warmth, cold sweating, malaise, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and anorexia. These are important because they may affect the operational performance of astronauts. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain space motion sickness: the fluid shift hypothesis and the

Triggers of motion sickness in migraine sufferers.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether susceptibility to motion sickness provoked by unexpected movement is associated with susceptibility to visually induced motion sickness in migraine sufferers. BACKGROUND: Migraine sufferers are unusually susceptible to motion sickness, but the mechanism of this susceptibility is not well understood. Possibilities include vestibular dysfunction secondary to vasomotor disturbances during migraine attacks, hyperexcitability of brainstem circuits that produce symptoms of motion sickness and migraine, and heightened susceptibility to visual illusions of movement. Scopolamine for preventing and treating motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness - the discomfort experienced when perceived motion disturbs the organs of balance - may include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, pallor, cold sweats, hypersalivation, hyperventilation and headaches. The control and prevention of these symptoms have included pharmacological, behavioural and complementary therapies. Although scopolamine has been used in the treatment and prevention of motion sickness for decades, there have been no systematic reviews of its effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of scopolamine versus no therapy, placebo, other drugs

Vector analysis of electrogastrography during motion sickness.

Although the dominant frequency at 3 cpm of electrogastrography (EGG) is reported to shift to a higher frequency during motion sickness (MS), it is unclear whether the normal slow wave (NSW) disappears or not. The authors investigated changes in NSW using vector analysis of EGG. Fourteen subjects were exposed to a Coriolis stimulation to evoke MS. EGG was recorded from two sets of bipolar leads, placed perpendicular to each other representing x and y axes. Trajectories for each frequency were drawn on the x-y plane. The amplitude and phase difference at NSW were compared before, during, and af

Motion sickness amelioration induced by prism spectacles.

A side effect of the prescription of prism glasses according to the principle of Utermöhlen to improve mechanical reading skills of certain types of learning disabled children was the alleviation of car sickness. Besides a decrease in reported symptoms after prescription of these glasses, the effect is quantified by a decrease in estimated number of emeses per year per patient. A placebo effect is unlikely because alleviation of car sickness was not the original intention of the prescription, and the symptoms returned as soon as the spectacles were discontinued.

[Individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness].

Several different theories exist about the origin of kinetosis and the space adaptation syndrome, with individual sensitivities differing significantly. One explanation involves the hypothesis of a different otolith mass between the right and left statolith organ and especially a difference in the utricles. A difference in mass results in a different sensitivity to acceleration. For this reason we measured interindividual variances in saccular and utricular otolith mass. Since the anatomy of the vestibular organ in vertebrates is based as similar principles, we selected fish (salmon and trout)

Visual and vestibular components of motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: The relative importance of visual and vestibular information in the etiology of motion sickness (MS) is not well understood, but these factors can be manipulated by inducing Coriolis and pseudo-Coriolis effects in experimental subjects. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that visual and vestibular information are equivalent in producing MS. The experiments reported here aim, in part, to examine the relative influence of Coriolis and pseudo-Coriolis effects in inducing MS. METHODS: We induced MS symptoms by combinations of whole body rotation and tilt, and environment rotation and tilt,
