Mucus stasis is a pathologic hallmark of muco-obstructive diseases, including cystic fibrosis (CF). Mucins, the principal component of mucus, are extensively modified with hydroxyl (O)-linked glycans, which are largely terminated by sialic acid. Sialic acid is a negatively charged monosaccharide and contributes to the biochemical/biophysical properties of mucins. Reports suggest that mucin sialylation may be altered in CF; however, the consequences of reduced sialylation on mucus clearance have not been fully determined. Here, we investigated the consequences of reduced sialylation on the char…

Background. The presence of a micropapillary pattern is associated with poor outcomes in lung adenocarcinoma. This study aimed to assess the clinicopathological features of micropapillary pattern in mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung. Methods. The patients were stratified into three groups: the invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma group (60 patients), the mixed invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma group (33 patients), and the invasive non-mucinous adenocarcinoma group (237 patients). The presence of micropapillary pattern and its clinicopathological features were analyzed and compared between the thr

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are detected in 0.7 to 1.7% of all appendicectomies. The diagnosis can be challenging, particularly in female patients where the differential diagnosis of primary appendiceal and ovarian mucinous neoplasms is unclear. Case Presentation. A 71-year-old female was referred to our tertiary hospital with the working diagnosis of a right ovarian cystic tumor. The lesion was identified through a transvaginal ultrasound performed for vague lower abdominal pain symptoms. CT scan confirmed these findings. Intraoperatively, an appendiceal mucoce

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to determine if MRI could be used to distinguish ovarian mucinous carcinoma (MC) from mucinous borderline tumor (MBT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 63 consecutive patients with histopathologically proven ovarian mucinous neoplasms (11 MCs and 52 MBTs) who underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced MRI. MRI images were retrospectively reviewed and compared between the 2 pathologies.
RESULTS: The maximum tumor diameters (219.7 ± 80.8 mm vs. 177.4 ± 56.5 mm, p < 0.05) and maximum mural nodule (MN) diameters (41.7 ± 33.8 mm vs. 6.6 ± 8.9 mm, p < 0.01) were

Mucinous cystadenoma is a benign tumor commonly found in the pancreas, the ovaries or the appendix. Only very few cases of these tumors originating from the lungs have been reported worldwide, with even less cases describing malignant transformation. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman with a history of recurrent pulmonary infections who underwent left upper lobectomy for lung abscess and was initially diagnosed with pulmonary mucinous cystadenoma (PMCA). Upon thorough immunohistochemical workup, especially due to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) positivity, intramucinous singlet cells we

A 74-year-old woman with multiple cystic lesions in the pancreas was first examined at a previous hospital. Many of the lesions in the head and body were diagnosed as a branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN), but one lesion in the tail was a simple cyst. She had no surgical treatment because there were no signs of malignancy in any of the lesions. After 3 years, solid components appeared only in the tail lesion. Because of its preoperative diagnosis as a mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN), distal pancreatectomy was performed. Histopathological findings revealed that the cystic

Secreted epithelial mucins are extremely large and heterogeneous glycoproteins. We report the 5 kilobase DNA sequence of a second gene, BSM2, which encodes bovine submaxillary mucin. The determined nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of BSM2 are 95.2% and 92. 2% identical, respectively, to those of the previously described BSM1 gene isolated from the same cow. Further, the five predicted protein domains of the two genes are 100%, 94%, 93%, 77%, and 88% identical. Based on the above results, we propose that expression of multiple homologous core proteins from a single animal is a factor…

Sixteen cases of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the cervix that were associated with a mucinous tumor of one or both ovaries are reported. The patients ranged from 25 to 70 (average, 44) years of age; two of them had the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Eight patients complained of abdominal swelling; most of the remainder had symptoms of uterine origin. Twelve patients had bilateral and four had unilateral ovarian tumors, which were typically large and cystic. Microscopic examination of most of the ovarian tumors revealed various combinations of benign-appearing, borderline, and carcinomatous mucinous epi

Mucinous adenocarcinoma, a rare subtype of primary bladder adenocarcinoma, accounts for approximately 20% of primary bladder adenocarcinomas and should be distinguished carefully from secondary adenocarcinomas of gastrointestinal origin. Herein, we report an unusual case of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma arising from a villous adenoma in a 52-year-old male presenting with urinary difficulties and recurrent bladder tumours. The patient had a significant medical history including right nephrectomy and left ureterolithotomy. Radiological and pathological evaluations revealed invasive mucinous ad

Mucinous carcinoma of the skin is a rare, low-grade malignancy often clinically misdiagnosed as a benign lesion. This tumour mostly grows locally and has minimal potential for lymphatic or distant metastasis. Commonly affected sites include the periorbital region, particularly the eyelid, and the scalp. Surgical resection is the preferred treatment. However, recurrences are frequent when resection margins are less than 1 cm. Differential diagnosis with mucinous skin metastases can be challenging. We report a patient with an occipital scalp tumour initially considered benign and left untreated

Primary mucinous tumors and secondary tumors involving the prostate gland are relatively uncommon, however they have important diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic implications. The primary mucinous tumors of the prostate include mucinous (colloid) adenocarcinoma of the prostate, prostatic adenocarcinoma with mucinous features, and mucinous adenocarcinoma of the prostatic urethra (mucin-producing urothelial-type adenocarcinoma of the prostate). Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the prostate is defined as a primary prostatic acinar tumor characterized by the presence of at least 25% of the tumor co

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Mucinous cystadenomas (MCAs) are benign epithelial ovarian tumors that occur rarely in children and adolescents. Because children and adolescents typically have their childbearing years ahead of them, conservative therapy is indicated. However, there is concern that ovarian cystectomy might be associated with significant recurrence risk in patients with MCA. Furthermore, guanine nucleotide binding protein, alpha stimulating (GNAS) gene mutations are associated with McCune-Albright syndrome, which is associated with cystic ovaries. We sought to evaluate the outcomes of children

Mucins are high-molecular weight glycoproteins typically found in normal skin in small amounts. There are several reports regarding different types of cutaneous mucinosis. In this report, we discuss mucins in dermatopathology as a diagnostic clue of some well-known entities and some less frequent cutaneous diseases. We also emphasize mucin as a sign in the differential diagnosis between conditions that show histopathological overlap. Lastly, we discuss the locations and circumstances in which mucin could be considered almost normal or physiological.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the female urethra is a rare malignancy. Previous studies hypothesize multiple origins, including periurethral glands or intestinal metaplasia. We report a case of a 60-year-old white woman with adenocarcinoma of the urethra who initially presented with obstructive voiding complaints secondary to a urethral mass. Wide local excision revealed invasive adenocarcinoma of the urethra with mucinous features. There was intestinal metaplasia adjacent to the tumor, as well as separate identification of intestinal metaplasia along the urethra. Ultimately, the patient underwent

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a grossly visible (≥1 cm), mucin-producing neoplasm that arises in the main pancreatic duct and/or its branches. Patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm can present with symptoms caused by obstruction of the pancreatic duct system, or they can be asymptomatic. There are 3 clinical subtypes of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm: main duct, branch duct, and mixed. Five histologic types of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm are recognized: gastric foveolar type, intestinal type, pancreatobiliary type, intraductal oncocytic

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin is a rare malignant tumour originating from the sweat glands. It is often misdiagnosed clinically since it has an uncharacteristic and variable presentation, and microscopically because it resembles a cutaneous metastasis from the more frequent mucinous adenocarcinomas of the colon, mammae, lungs and ovaries. The tumour often recurs, but mortality is low. We present a case with regional lymph node metastases five years after excision of the primary tumour.

Primary thymic adenocarcinoma, mucinous subtype, is extremely rare with only one case reported to date. We describe herein a case of thymic mucinous adenocarcinoma. A 59-year-old man was identified to have an anterior mediastinal tumor and was diagnosed as mucinous adenocarcinoma. Clinical and radiographic examinations disclosed no evidence of tumor elsewhere. The patient received radiotherapy, but the general condition deteriorated and died 11 months after tumor detection. Thoracic autopsy revealed an anterior mediastinal tumor measuring greater than 10 cm, uncapsulated, and white. The tumor
