We report two cases of mucocele of the appendix produced by a cystadenocarcinoma, with pseudomyxoma peritonei in one. The treatment consisted in appendectomy with partial resection of the caecum, for the first patient. It consisted in wide resection and in local chemotherapy for the second.

The relationship between cystic fibrosis, nasal polyposis and chronic sinusitis is clearly defined. Mucoceles of the paranasal sinuses, however, are a well-described complication of chronic sinusitis in adults; but they rarely occur in the pediatric age group. We report a three-year-old who presented with epiphora and fullness at the right medial canthus. Computed tomography confirmed a right ethmoid mucocele which was surgically drained, with resolution of symptoms. Approximately 12 other cases of mucoceles have been reported in the pediatric age group. Although many of these patients had rec…

The clinical presentation of sphenoid sinus mucocele is usually dependent on the degree of involvement of adjacent structures. Since extension can be in any direction, there is a wide spectrum of symptomatology and clinical diagnosis can be difficult. Five cases of sphenoid sinus mucocele, four of which were demonstrated by computed tomography (CT), are presented. CT with its multiplanar display capability, is the diagnostic procedure of choice. It not only demonstrates the extent of the lesions non-invasively, but its ability to demonstrate bony expansion and destruction as well as density an…

PURPOSE: To report the clinical features and operative findings of a series of patients with lacrimal sac mucoceles extending above the anatomic level of the medial canthal tendon (MCT).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients presenting with lacrimal sac mucocele extending above the anatomic level of the MCT over a period of five years from 2019 and 2023. All patients underwent surgical management. Diagnosis of lacrimal sac mucocele was based on clinical examination, imaging where indicated and intraoperative confirmation. Data obtained include demographics, clinical presentat…

Mucoceles of the appendix are rare and can have quite variable imaging and clinical presentations, sometimes mimicking an adnexal mass. The underlying cause can be neoplastic or non-neoplastic. The typical imaging appearance of a mucocele of the appendix is that of a cystic structure with a tubular morphology. This structure is defined by having a blind-ending and being contiguous with the cecum. Radiologists should be familiar with key anatomical landmarks and with the various imaging features of mucoceles of the appendix, in order to provide a meaningful differential diagnosis of a lesion in…

Mucoceles are common salivary gland disorders. Mucoceles are benign, mucus-filled extravasation pseudocysts that commonly arise on the lower lip of children and young adults. Although surgical excision is commonly performed to remove these lesions, other treatments include marsupialization, micromarsupialization laser ablation, cryotherapy, intralesional steroid injection, and sclerosing agents. Traumatic sialoceles commonly arise from injury to the parotid duct. Treatment of sialoceles from acute parotid duct injury and for delayed presentations after injury are discussed. Ranulas are a subty…

Appendiceal mucoceles are rare lesions with a variable clinical presentation often identified incidentally on imaging or at laparotomy/laparoscopy for an unrelated diagnosis. Mucocele of the appendix may be a benign or malignant process, making early recognition based on symptoms and key radiographic characteristics of the utmost importance for optimal patient management. Here we present the case of a patient presenting with non-specific abdominal complaints suffering from appendiceal mucocele perforation due to low-grade mucinous adenocarcinoma.

Oral mucoceles are mucin filled cavities and lined by ductal epithelium or covered by granulation tissue in retention or extravasation type respectively. The extra-vasation type is very common in the minor salivary glands (particularly in the labial glands), but very infrequent in the major salivary glands, whilst most of the retention cyst affect the major salivary glands. Partial obstruction of duct and spillage of mucin following trauma are the chief etiological factors. Though the two lesions are clinically indistinguishable, the patients are typically older than in the case of extra-vasat…

The histologic characteristics of a salivary mucocele in a beagle used in a toxicity study are described in this report. A pale yellowish cyst under the mandibular skin containing frothy mucus was observed at necropsy. Microscopically, numerous villous projections arose from the internal surface of the cyst and were lined by stratified epithelial-like macrophages, which were immunopositive for macrophage scavenger receptor A. A ruptured sublingual interlobar duct connected to the lumen was observed near the cyst. Luminal amorphous material showed a positive reaction with Alcian blue and period…

BACKGROUND: Mucocele is one of the most common benign soft tissue tumor present in the oral cavity. They are of two types - one is extravasation and second one is retention type but the majority are extravasation type.
AIMS: The objective is to determine various factors related to mucocele such as role of trauma due to nearby teeth, recurrence, duration, and to find out whether there is any role of psychological stress which initiates trauma like lip or cheek biting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 36 cases of mucocele diagnosed at the Department of the Oral Pathology, Govt. Dental College and Hospit…

Submandibular Gland Mucocele:The mucocele occuring in the submandibular region is rare, most cases originate in the sublingual gland. Here, we report a rare case of mucocele originating in the submandibular gland. In this report, we present such a case in a 7-year-old boy, who was treated by an extirpation of cyst with submandibular and sublingual gland

An 18-month-old, spayed female, domestic shorthaired cat was presented with clinical signs of depression and reluctance to walk, which progressed to nonambulatory tetraparesis. Increased opacification of both frontal sinuses and a cyst-like abnormality causing compression and displacement of the right frontal lobe were seen on computed tomography. Bilateral frontal sinus trephination and right transfrontal craniotomy revealed clear, viscous fluid in the right frontal sinus and rostral fossa, compatible with an intracranial mucocele. At a 6-month follow-up examination, no signs of recurrence we…

Giant mucocele of the frontal sinus is a rare pathology of benign entity caused by retention of mucous secretions in the sinus. It may expand and erode the surrounding structures such as bones and cerebral parenchyma. The authors describe a patient with frontal giant mucocele involving the orbit, the ethmoid, and intracranial portion of the dura. The main presenting symptoms were diplopia and proptosis. A computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging were performed to permit differential diagnosis from other pathologies such as ossifying fibroma, fibrous dysplasia, and other neoplasm…
