Quetiapine for hypnogogic musical release hallucinations.

Musical release hallucinations are complex auditory phenomena, affecting mostly the deaf geriatric population, in which individuals hear vocal or instrumental music. Progressive hearing loss from otosclerosis disrupts the usual external sensory stimuli necessary to inhibit the emergence of memory traces within the brain, thereby "releasing" previously recorded perceptions. Responses to conventional antipsychotic agents have been variable and extrapyramidal and other side effects have limited their use. We report the first case of hypnogogic release hallucinations successfully treated with the …

Are musical obsessions a temporal lobe phenomenon?

Obsessive musical tunes have been described in some cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The authors present 2 cases of patients with musical obsessions, including findings from functional brain imaging. Both patients, 1 with idiopathic OCD and 1 with symptoms secondary to head trauma, demonstrated decreased blood flow in temporal lobes. This finding is consistent with previous literature on musical and auditory hallucinations.

Unilateral musical hallucinations and all that jazz.

A 78-year-old hearing-impaired woman who presented to hospital with a stroke and a subsequent epileptic seizure later developed unilateral musical hallucinations in her better hearing (right) ear. She was found to have a left-sided temporal epileptic focus and the music ceased after a second anti-convulsant was introduced. Comments are made on unusual features of the hallucination and its probable causation.

Doppler study of precordial musical murmurs.

Using phonocardiography, continuous- and pulsed-wave Doppler, 51 patients with precordial "musical" murmurs (49 with cardiac abnormalities) and 21 patients with noisy murmurs were examined. With M-mode echocardiography, fine fluttering of the structure generating the murmur was evident in 23 patients with musical murmurs and in 5 with noisy murmurs. A continuous-wave Doppler spectral signal characterized by parallel harmonics (Doppler musical signal) was evident in all patients with musical murmurs and in none with a noisy murmur. With pulsed-wave Doppler, the musical signal had less defined s…

Gendered role assignment and musical self-efficacy in extracurricular music education: hidden curriculum pathways to inclusion and equity.

Gender-based disparities in musical role assignment and self-efficacy have been documented across educational contexts, yet the association between perceived role allocation and self-evaluative beliefs remains insufficiently specified in extracurricular music settings. Using cross-sectional survey data from 312 university students enrolled in extracurricular music classes, this study examined whether gender schema internalization (GSI) statistically accounted for part of the association between perceived role assignment (PRA) and musical self-efficacy (MSE), and whether this indirect associati…

A descriptive study of Myers-Briggs personality types of professional music educators and music therapists with comparisons to undergraduate majors.

The purpose of the current study was to determine personality types and demographic characteristics of professional music educators and music therapists. The researchers also sought to determine if personality types of professionals were consistent with undergraduate majors in those fields and personal characteristics as suggested by The Music Education National Conference (MENC) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). The research of Steele and Young (2008) found strong similarities and some differences between undergraduate music education and music therapy students. The possibili…

Musical Peptide: Fragmentation of Musical Protein for AI-driven Bioactive Peptide Discovery Based on a New DeepPepQSAR Pipeline.

Musical protein (MPro), the protein defined by music (namely biologization of music), is a reverse operation of the traditional life music that addresses the sonification of biomolecule to musical audio. We previously described a computational strategy for MPro facilitation, which maps the time sequence of music onto the spatial architecture of protein. Here, we further extend MPro to musical peptide (MPep) by fragmentizing MPro protein at either music time sequence level or protein residue sequence level, which represents a new technique to de novo generate distinct peptidic big data with int…

Automated Tessituragram Analysis Software of Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) Files to Quantitatively Assess Musical Demands.

OBJECTIVES: Quantitatively assessing musical demands primarily relies on time-consuming manual data entry methods. This reliance limits the development of the larger datasets needed to assess generalizable trends in musical compositions. To remedy this labor-intensive manual data entry issue, the purpose of this study was to: DESIGN: A Python application was developed to parse and convert single-track MIDI files into a list of pitch frequencies and silences. The software then uses this list to compute musical difficulty metrics based on previously established tessituragram analysis methods. Af…

Music in mind, a randomized controlled trial of music therapy for young people with behavioural and emotional problems: study protocol.

AIMS: This article is a report of a trial protocol to determine if improvizational music therapy leads to clinically significant improvement in communication and interaction skills for young people experiencing social, emotional or behavioural problems. BACKGROUND: Music therapy is often considered an effective intervention for young people experiencing social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. However, this assumption lacks empirical evidence. STUDY DESIGN: Music in mind is a multi-centred single-blind randomized controlled trial involving 200 young people (aged 8-16 years) and their p…

The major-minor mode dichotomy in music perception.

In Western tonal music, major and minor modes are recognized as the primary musical features in eliciting emotional responses. The underlying correlates of this dichotomy in music perception have been extensively investigated through decades of psychological and neuroscientific research, yielding plentiful yet often discordant results that highlight the complexity and individual differences in how these modes are perceived. This variability suggests that a deeper understanding of major-minor mode perception in music is still needed. We present the first comprehensive systematic review and meta…
