Development of an animatronic headform test method for determining the efficacy of medical masks and barrier face coverings-part 1: total filtration efficacy.

The effectiveness of face coverings against respiratory viruses is crucial for public health but often lacks realistic performance assessments of protection and comfort. In this study, a system-level test method was developed using an animatronic headform to incorporate fit and dynamic wear into the assessment of total filtration efficacy of medical masks and barrier face coverings. Six commercially available products were evaluated, including an N95 respirator as the control. Total filtration efficacy was calculated from differential particle counts recorded inside and outside of face coverin

Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis Caused by Mercaptobenzothiazole in DS2 Dust Mask Straps During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Study of Outbreak and Proposal of Safer Alternatives.

BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the widespread use of dust masks, including N95 and DS2, in healthcare settings. Although allergic contact dermatitis caused by dust mask straps has been reported, component analysis of the straps is rare. We encountered an outbreak of dermatitis cases due to rubber straps of a DS2 mask (Mask A) at our hospital. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the cause of dermatitis associated with Mask A rubber strap, identify the allergens responsible for allergic contact dermatitis and propose suitable alternative masks. PATIENTS/METHODS: Twelve health

N95 masks increase brain blood velocity and parasympathetic outflow, yet worsen orthostatic symptoms in a healthy cohort.

Mask wearing became commonplace in everyday life during the COVID-19 pandemic and masks are frequently used in certain professions. Masks can increase end-tidal CO2 and the cerebrovasculature is known to vasodilate in response to hypercapnia. Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is the inability to tolerate postural transitions due to the displacement of blood volume away from the cerebral circulation, and we hypothesized that wearing a mask would improve OI symptoms by increasing brain blood flow. Young, healthy participants (n = 27) completed 10 min of 70° head-up tilt while wearing/not wearing an N

Effect of Wearing a Surgical Mask or N95 Mask in Patients With Stable Chronic Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure.

BACKGROUND: Surgical and N95 masks are commonly used in the prevention of respiratory virus transmission. The safety of wearing masks is well documented in healthy individuals but is unclear in people with chronic hypercapnia. In addition, masks are often poorly tolerated in this population. The present study assessed the effect of surgical and N95 masks in people with stable chronic hypercapnia using noninvasive ventilation (NIV). METHODS: A randomized crossover trial was performed. SpO2 and transcutaneous CO2 (PtcCO2) were measured in participants wearing a surgical mask, an N95 mask, and n

Sacrificed: Ontario Healthcare Workers in the Time of COVID-19.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) in Ontario, Canada have faced unprecedented risks during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have been infected at an elevated rate compared to the general public. HCWs have argued for better protections with minimal success. A worldwide shortage of N95s and comparable respirators appears to have influenced guidelines for protection, which stand at odds with increasing scientific evidence. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten frontline HCWs about their concerns. They reported that the risk of contracting COVID-19 and infecting family members has created intense anxiety

Personal Protective Equipment Use by Dairy Farmworkers Exposed to Cows Infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Viruses - Colorado, 2024.

The risk for transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus from dairy cows to humans is currently low; however, personal protective equipment (PPE) use during work activities on dairy farms has not been well described. PPE use can protect farmworkers when they are working with highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1)-infected cows. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) offered PPE to all Colorado farms before or during an A(H5N1) outbreak in cows in 2024. CDPHE surveyed 83 dairy workers from three fa

Theory-based Behavioral Predictors of Self-reported Use of Face Coverings in Public Settings during the COVID-19 Pandemic in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Investigating antecedents of behaviors, such as wearing face coverings, is critical for developing strategies to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine associations between theory-based behavioral predictors of intention to wear a face covering and actual wearing of a face covering in public. METHODS: Data from a cross-sectional panel survey of U.S. adults conducted in May and June 2020 (N = 1,004) were used to test a theory-based behavioral path model. We (a) examined predictors of intention to wear a face covering, (b) reported use

Severe febrile respiratory illnesses as a cause of mass critical care.

Febrile respiratory illnesses with respiratory failure are one of the most common reasons for admission to the intensive care unit. Most causes of febrile respiratory illness are bacterial and viral agents of community-acquired pneumonia. However, a small number of rare and highly contagious agents can initially present as febrile respiratory illnesses, which can lead to an epidemic that can greatly impact the health care system. This impact includes sustained mass critical care, with potential scarcity of critical resources (eg, positive-pressure ventilators), spread of disease to health care

Limited Benefit of Facility Isolation and the Rationale for Home Care in Children with Mild COVID-19.

Considering the mild degree of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children and the enormous stress caused by isolation in unfamiliar places, policies requiring mandatory isolation at medical facilities should be reevaluated especially given the impact of the pandemic on the availability of hospital beds. In this study, we assessed the usefulness of facility isolation and the transmissibility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 by infected children to uninfected caregivers in isolation units at a hospital and a residential treatment center in Seoul during August-November 2020

Fundamental protective mechanisms of face masks against droplet infections.

Many governments have instructed the population to wear simple mouse-and-nose covers or surgical face masks to protect themselves from droplet infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in public. However, the basic protection mechanisms and benefits of these masks remain controversial. Therefore, the aim of this work is to show from a fluid physics point of view under which circumstances these masks can protect against droplet infection. First of all, we show that the masks protect people in the surrounding area quite well, since the flow resistance of the

Fit Testing Failure of Reprocessed "Duckbill"-Type N95 Masks.

OBJECTIVES: In response to worldwide shortages of N95 masks during the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 pandemic, various strategies have been used. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend several strategies, including simple isolation to reprocessing methods using vaporized hydrogen peroxide to guide reuse of masks up to five times. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) quantitative fit testing was performed after five trials of donning and doffing in one cohort of new masks and two cohorts of repeatedly sterilized "duckbill"-type N95 ma
