The impact of emotions on body-Focused repetitive behaviors: evidence from a non-treatment-seeking sample.

UNLABELLED: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are repetitive, injurious, and non-functional habits that cause significant distress or impairment, including hair-pulling, skin-picking, and nail-biting. The emotion regulation (ER) model suggests that BFRBs are triggered by negative emotions and reinforced by alleviation of unpleasant affect. The frustrated action (FA) model suggests that BFRBs are triggered by and alleviate impatience, boredom, frustration, and dissatisfaction. Individuals with BFRBs are hypothesized to be particularly susceptible to these emotions because they demonstra

Insights into recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors: evidenced by New York Times commenters.

In September 2019, the New York Times (NYT) published the article "Fighting the Shame of Skin Picking," which discussed the cosmetic, social and emotional impacts of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). BFRBs, including excoriation disorder, trichotillomania, onychotillomania, and onychophagia, are recurring actions that damage one's physical appearance. The aim of this study is to characterize the demographic information provided and themes raised in the 166 comments posted in response to the article. The most commonly reported condition was skin picking (38.2%), followed by trichotillo

Self report of skin problems among farmworkers in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: This study estimates the prevalence of self-reported skin problems among Latino farmworkers and identifies associated risk factors. METHODS: The study used a longitudinal surveillance design. Participants were interviewed up to five times and reported skin problems and personal, work, and environment characteristics. Frequencies and counts were calculated for 13 skin problems. Adjusted odds ratios were obtained for six skin problems. RESULTS: More than one-third of participants reported skin problems, including skin and nail fungus; sunburn; bumps, pimples, or acne; calluses; itc

[Muricide induced by thiamine deficiency in the rats (author's transl)].

The emotional behavioral aspects and the interaction between the changes of the polyamine contents and muricide response in thiamine deficient rats were investigated. In the thiamine deficient group, there was evidence of muricide and such increased progressively with advanced thiamine deficient feeding. This muricide was characteristic in the following respects; 1) the killer-rats did not eat but only kill a mouse and it was quite difficult to remove a sacrificed animal from the cage. 2) they bit at random into any body region of the mouse. 3) the killer-rats did not bite inanimate objects su

Clinical assessment of deleterious oral habits and dental caries-periodontal parameters among Turkish twins.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Twin studies are crucial to assess the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors. This study w … out (P = 0.007). A statistically significant difference was found between MZ twins with and without nail biting in terms of bleeding on probing and dmfs values (P = 0.035; P = 0.012). The mean values of the plaque index increased due to the mouth breathing in DZ twins (P = 0.024). Regarding the bleeding on probing, there was a statistically significant differ …

How much atopy is attributable to common childhood environmental exposures? A population-based birth cohort study followed to adulthood.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of atopic diseases implies a strong influence of environmental determinants. Epidemiological studies have identified several early life exposures that appear to influence the risk of developing atopic sensitization, but the combined influence of these exposures is unknown. We sought to estimate the proportion of atopy that could be attributed to common childhood exposures associated with atopic sensitization in adolescence and young adulthood. METHODS: Atopic sensitization was measured by skin-prick tests for common aeroallergens in a population-based New Zea

Childhood body-focused behaviors and social behaviors as risk factors of eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: The risk factors for adolescent eating disorders are poorly understood. It is generally agreed, however, that interactions with one's body and interactions with others are two important features in the development of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Therefore, we assessed a variety of childhood body-focused behaviors and childhood social behaviors in eating-disordered patients as compared to non-eating-disordered subjects. METHOD: We compared 50 female inpatients with eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia nervosa), 50 female inpatients with polysubstance dependence, and 50 nonpatient

Intestinal Parasitic Infections in Marginalized Populations: Prevalence and Risk Factors Among the Bantar Community of Sunsari, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Nepal continues to exhibit a high burden of intestinal parasite infections (IPIs). This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of IPIs among the indigenous Bantar community in Koshi Rural Municipality, Sunsari, Nepal. Clinical Outcome of an Impacted Maxillary Canine: From Exposition to Occlusion.

AIM: The aim is to report a case of impacted maxillary right canine successfully positioned into the occlusion line. BACKGROUND: Although the treatment of choice for an impacted canine is a combined surgical-orthodontic approach, there are differences in technique. The preorthodontic uncovering and autonomous eruption technique is a safe and predictable option for the treatment of palatally impacted maxillary canines in adolescents and adults as is the orthodontic creation of a space before minimal surgical exposure, the bonding of a small attachment (an eyelet), full-flap closure, and immedi

The most common psychiatric disorders were attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ODD, nail biting, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Only one subject was affected by TS without co-morbidities. Craving for menthol sweets: a case report.

We describe a case of craving for menthol sweets in a 53-year-old woman with excessive consumption of menthol sweets (100 units/day). She was admitted with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, anxiety associated with onychophagia and pinching of the skin. Organic disorders were ruled out with paraclinical tests and in-hospital treatment was administered. At discharge, the patient's condition was stable, but because of exacerbated pain due to the rheumatological disease, she presented depressive symptoms, requiring her medication to be adjusted. CONCLUSIONS: The "food craving" and anxiet
