Incidence and 5-year survival of children and adolescents with hepatoblastoma in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common pediatric primary malignant liver tumor, its incidence has been increasing worldwide, but recent changes in incidence and outcomes with high population coverage are not well characterized. METHODS: We defined the incidence of HB diagnosed during 2003-2017 from United States Cancer Statistics (USCS) database, and survival during 2001-2016 from the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). Data were stratified by sex, race/ethnicity, age, tumor stage, county population, and diagnosis year. Incidence trends were assessed by calculating averag…

[Dental examination integral part of preventive testing head and neck cancers].

In recent years, in Poland and in Europe, we have seen a steady increase in the incidence of malignant tumors of the head and neck. On the basis of national cancer registries, the increase in new cases in the last ten years is over 15% and that worries epidemiologists and the medical community. Taken in Europe prevention programs aimed at reducing new cases. In Grater Poland from 2012 has initiated an innovative program for Early Detection of Cancer, Department of Head and Neck Surgery Medical University in Poznan and the Department of Health Marshal’s Office in Poznan. The aim of the study wa

Feasibility assessment of implementing lung cancer screening among current and former heavy smokers: a national pilot program in Israel (2021-2024).

BACKGROUND: Following international evidence supporting low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), the Israel Ministry of Health (MOH) established the TIGAR pilot program to assess the feasibility of implementing a national LDCT screening program for high-risk populations, aligned with contemporary frameworks for screening implementation. METHODS: The pilot (2021-2024) was coordinated nationally in collaboration with all four Israeli Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). The evaluation was guided by the framework of Dobrow et al., which assesses three domains: condition, intervention, and system

Risk of cancer in patients with genital warts: A nationwide, population-based cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Condyloma acuminata currently affects around 1% of sexually active adults, and its incidence is increasing. The coexistence of genital warts (GW) and certain cancers and an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and various malignancies have been reported. Therefore, we conducted this large national study to analyze the risk of malignancies among men and women with GW in Taiwan. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Between January 2000 and December 2013, approximately 3 million patients were reported to the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. Of these patients, 21,763

The regional cancer spectrum in Uganda: a population-based cancer survey by sub-regions (2017-2020).

BACKGROUND: Accurate estimation of the burden of cancer in developing countries is a major public health concern for cancer prevention and control because of the limited coverage of population-based cancer registries (PBCRs). The cancer registration coverage status of Uganda was 11.90% and was not uniformly distributed in all regions of Uganda. This population-based survey was conducted to assess the burden of cancer in all the sub-regions of Uganda by site, sex and age group to accurately determine the cancer profile of Uganda by sub-region for a tailored intervention to mitigate cancer risk

Effect of Test History at Ages 50-64 on Later Cervical Cancer Risk: A Population-based Case-control Study.

UNLABELLED: As life expectancy increases, the effectiveness of cervical cancer screening programs needs to be reassessed for the older population. We addressed the effect of test history in and outside organized screening at age 50-64 years on later cervical cancer risk. A case-control study was conducted by deriving 229 cases of 65-79 years old women with invasive cervical cancer in 2010-2019 from the Finnish Cancer Registry. Ten controls were matched for each case by birth year and hospital district. The effect of test uptake and abnormal results in 50-64 year olds on cancer risk was investi

Design of a randomized controlled trial for multiple cancer risk behaviors among Spanish-speaking Mexican-origin smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity account for as much as 60% of cancer risk. Latinos experience profound disparities in health behaviors, as well as the cancers associated with them. Currently, there is a dearth of controlled trials addressing these health behaviors among Latinos. Further, to the best of our knowledge, no studies address all three behaviors simultaneously, are culturally sensitive, and are guided by formative work with the target population. Latinos represent 14% of the U.S. population and are the fastest growing minority group in the country. Efforts to

Role of radiation in extensive stage small cell lung cancer: a National Cancer Database registry analysis.

The role of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) and thoracic radiation therapy (TRT) in extensive-stage small cell lung cancer remains controversial. The authors examined the National Cancer Database and identified patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer with no brain metastasis. Patients were excluded if they died 30 days from diagnosis, did not receive polychemotherapy, had other palliative radiation or had missing information. A propensity score-matched analysis was also performed. A total of 21,019 patients were identified. The majority of patients did not receive radiation

Recent trends in breast cancer among younger women in the United States.

Increases in the incidence of postmenopausal breast cancers have been linked to screening and menopausal hormone use, but younger women have received less attention. Thus, we analyzed trends in breast cancer incidence (N = 387 231) using the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program 13-Registry database (1992-2004). Whites had higher incidence rates than blacks after age 40 years, but the reverse was true among younger women (black-white crossover). Among younger women, the rate per 100,000 woman-years was 16.8 for black vs 15.1 for white women; the highes

Quality indicators for cervical screening in Sweden.

ObjectivesComparisons and optimization of screening programs are based on quality indicators (QI), but these are not well standardized and commonly not published. We report 13 QIs used for cervical screening in Sweden. These are decided on by the authorities and reported by the Swedish National Cervical Screening Registry that collects all data and calculates the QIs. The QIs as well as trends discovered and observations made during recent years, including effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, are summarized.SettingSweden. Anal cancer incidence and survival: comparing the greater San-Francisco bay area to other SEER cancer registries.

The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, anal canal, and anorectum (SCCA) has increased over time. However, there are still no national guidelines on screening for SCCA among high-risk populations. Providers at University of California, San Francisco have been at the forefront of providing anal dysplasia screening. To determine whether such a screening program allows for earlier detection of abnormalities and consequently, improves patient survival, we conducted an ecological study using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program to compare the San Fr

Cancer Incidence following Expansion of HIV Treatment in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: The expansion of combination antiretroviral treatment (ART) in southern Africa has dramatically reduced mortality due to AIDS-related infections, but the impact of ART on cancer incidence in the region is unknown. We sought to describe trends in cancer incidence in Botswana during implementation of the first public ART program in Africa. METHODS: We included 8479 incident cases from the Botswana National Cancer Registry during a period of significant ART expansion in Botswana, 2003-2008, when ART coverage increased from 7.3% to 82.3%. We fit Poisson models of age-adjusted cancer i

Has survival improved for nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the United States?

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiologic patterns and survival rates for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma over the last three decades. METHODS: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program tumor registries were used to identify patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the United States from 1973 to 1999. Incidence and survival rates for each decade were then determined according to age, gender, race, histological type, and stage using the SEER statistical program. RESULTS: From 1973 to 1999, 4680 cases of patients with nasopharyngeal ca

A deep learning algorithm to predict risk of pancreatic cancer from disease trajectories.

Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive disease that typically presents late with poor outcomes, indicating a pronounced need for early detection. In this study, we applied artificial intelligence methods to clinical data from 6 million patients (24,000 pancreatic cancer cases) in Denmark (Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR)) and from 3 million patients (3,900 cases) in the United States (US Veterans Affairs (US-VA)). We trained machine learning models on the sequence of disease codes in clinical histories and tested prediction of cancer occurrence within incremental time windows (CancerRiskNet

Increasing socioeconomically disadvantaged patients' engagement in breast cancer surgery decision-making through a shared decision-making intervention (A231701CD): protocol for a cluster randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic disparities for breast cancer surgical care exist. Although the aetiology of the observed socioeconomic disparities is likely multifactorial, patient engagement during the surgical consult is critical. Shared decision-making may reduce health disparities by addressing barriers to patient engagement in decision-making that disproportionately impact socioeconomically disadvantaged patients. In this trial, we test the impact of a decision aid on increasing socioeconomically disadvantaged patients' engagement in breast cancer surgery decision-making. METHODS AND ANALYS

Dose-response of accelerometer-measured physical activity, step count, and cancer risk in the UK Biobank: a prospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is an age-related condition, but changes to modifiable lifestyle-related behaviours, including physical activity, could impact risk. While step count is an accessible metric of activity for older adults, its association with cancer risk remains poorly understood. We investigated the association between accelerometer-measured total activity, step count, and cancer risk. METHODS: We analysed data from a prospective UK Biobank cohort of consenting participants who wore wrist-based Axivity AX3 accelerometer devices for 7 days between June 1, 2013 and Dec 23, 2015, had valid acc
