To simulate the chronic alpha radiation of Thorotrast, the liver of female Wistar rats was exposed to fractionated neutron irradiation at 14-d intervals (0.2 Gy per fraction) over 2 y to a total dose of 10.0 Gy. The incidences of spontaneous tumors of the murine hybrids (C57BL/6J X C3Hf)F1 (B6C3F1) and (C57BL/6J X BALB/c)F1 (B6CF1) were compared in untreated mice kept until 110 weeks of age. Male B6C3F1 and B6CF1 mice had respectively 16% and 20% incidence of lymphomas, 26% and 4% of liver tumors and 12% and 22% of lung tumors. Gastrin was administered several times to mice with transplantable hepatoma, sarcomas, colon adenocarcinoma and adenocarcinoma of small intestine. Injections of gastrin stimulated the growth of colon adenocarcinoma in mice but not of the other tumors tested. Dependence upon gastro-intestinal hormones of "spontaneous" carcinogenesis in gastro-intestinal tract and the growth of many gastro-intestinal pancreatic and liver tumors is suggested. This hormone dependence could be used for the treatment and prophylaxis of some tumors of the gastro-intestinal tract.

In infants, hypercalcemia from elevated parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is rare, often signaling neoplasm or renal or urinary anomalies. We report an infant who presented with failure to thrive and hypercalcemia at 10 months old, with initial evaluation showing elevated PTHrP of unclear etiology with imaging negative for neoplasm and no structural anomalies of the kidneys or ureters on ultrasound. BACKGROUND: The rising incidence of thyroid cancer observed during the last few decades in most western countries is explained in large part by increasing numbers of diagnoses due to changes in medical screening practices.
