Localized fibrous "mesothelioma" of pleura (submesothelial fibroma): a clinicopathologic study of 18 cases.

Eighteen cases of solid fibrous tumors of the visceral pleura are studied. The series includes neoplasms of various sizes removed during the last 17 years at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Most tumors showed consistent gross and light microscopic features, such as encapsulation, preservation of pedicle, origin from visceral pleura, predominance of spindle cells with more or less hyalinized stroma, little or no pleomorphism or mitotic activity and no infiltration of the underlying lung. No sex predominance or relation to environmental pollutants was noted. Peak incidence was in the 6th decade of lif

Primary Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma of the Colon Mesentery.

An undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), also known as a malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the past, commonly involves the soft tissue of the extremities and the retroperitoneum. However, a primary UPS of the colon mesentery is very rare. A 69-year-old male patient visited our outpatient department for treatment of an enlarged, palpable mass in the right lower quadrant (RLQ). Computed tomography showed a 15-cm multilobulated, heterogeneous, enhanced mass in the RLQ, which we suspected originated from the colon. He underwent a right hemicolectomy, and the pathologic result was a colon mes

Endobronchial solitary fibrous tumors: An enigma for diagnosis.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms constituting less than 2% of all soft tissue tumors. They typically originate in the thoracic cavity, mainly in the pleura, but can also occur in other various sites such as lung parenchyma, pericardium, and bronchus. In this study, a 49-year-old non-smoking female with a history of allergies presented to our pulmonary clinic with a chronic cough. An explorative bronchoscopy revealed an intrabronchial mass in the left superior bronchi, and a 68 Ga-DOTATOC positron emission computed tomography suggested a carcinoid tumor. Subsequent

Molecular Heterogeneity and Clinicopathologic Correlations in Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors of the Urinary Bladder: A Study of 20 Cases With Predominant FN1::ALK Fusions and Novel Kinase Rearrangements.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the urinary bladder are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with an incompletely defined molecular spectrum. This integrated clinicopathologic and molecular study of 20 bladder IMTs utilized immunohistochemistry (IHC), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and targeted RNA sequencing to characterize their molecular drivers. Clinically, patients (mean age 45 y) presented with hematuria (85%) and cystoscopic polypoid/nodular masses; despite muscularis propria invovlement (55%) or perivesical soft tissue extension (5%), clinical outcomes were excellent (9

[Olfactory neuroblastoma: a histopathological ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of 11 cases].

Eleven cases of olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) were studied histopathologically, ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically. Light microscopical examination showed the tumor cell nests separated by fibrous connective tissue (present in 10/11 ONB), Homer-Wright rosette and/or Flexner rosette (9/11 ONB) and acidophilic fibrillary background (8/11 ONB). Ultrastructurally, there were neurosecretory granules (2/2 ONB) and neurofibrils (1/2 ONB) in cytoplasm of tumor cells. A panel of antibodies were used to characterize the immunohistochemical staining profile of ONB. The following results were obt

ALK-Rearranged Epithelioid and Spindle Cell Neoplasm of the Sinonasal Tract.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms (non-inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor and non-epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma) have been recently described which tend to occur in the superficial and deep soft tissues. Occurrence as a primary sinonasal neoplasm has not been reported thus far. Herein, we describe the first case of sinonasal ALK-rearranged mesenchymal tumor that harbored remarkable epithelioid and spindle cell morphology. The tumor affected a 40-year-old man who presented with flu-like symptoms and was thought to have influenza A. However, computed tomography

MRI for Diagnosing Musculoskeletal Tumors: A Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Tissue Composition.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) tumors are neoplasms that arise in the bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, nerves, and synovium. These lesions are highly diverse, comprising various tissue components such as mature fat, fluid, hematoma, and fibrous tissue. MRI is a crucial modality for diagnosing MSK tumors, providing both qualitative and quantitative assessments of tissue composition. The key tissue components of MSK tumors that are identifiable on MRI include mature fat and fluid. However, hyperintense mimickers-such as subacute hematomas on T1-weighted image (T1WI) and pseudocystic lesions on T2-weig

Large retroperitoneal mass: A case of an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a group of rare malignant tumors arising from mesenchymal stem cells. There are more than 60 different types of neoplasms that fall under the umbrella of STS, including tumors that originate from cartilage, adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, or connective tissue, among many other tissue types. One particular type of high-grade aggressive STS is the undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), formerly known as the malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH). There has historically been much debate about the classification and differentiation of UPS from other types of sarc

Myxoid neoplasms with MAP3K kinase fusion: a study of 39 cases.

AIMS: Myxomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms typically driven by activating GNAS mutations. However, a subset lacks this alteration and remains molecularly undefined. Recent reports have implicated MAP3K family gene fusions in rare myxoid neoplasms sharing features with myxoma. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we characterise 39 MAP3K-rearranged myxoid tumours by integrating clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular data. The cohort comprised predominantly middle-aged adults, with tumours distributed across a wide anatomic range (limbs, trunk, face), often in superfi

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax: CT findings and pathological features.

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax are uncommon and may originate from the muscle, bone, cartilage, vessel, nerves, fat and fibrous tissue. These tumours occur at different sites including the lung, pleura, mediastinum or chest wall. Mesenchymal tumours tend to show protean and non-specific imaging characteristics. However, in some instances, the imaging characteristics of the tumour may allow a specific diagnosis to be made, such as with lipoid or vascular tumours.

Encapsulated papillary carcinoma arising in ectopic breast tissue in the vulva: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) is a rare breast neoplasm, typically seen in postmenopausal women, and is exceedingly uncommon in ectopic breast tissue. We report one such case of EPC arising in ectopic breast tissue of the vulva, highlighting diagnostic and management challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old female patient presented with a slowly enlarging, painful cystic vulvar mass. Clinical examination revealed a firm, mobile nodule on the right labia majora. Imaging studies were inconclusive, and differential diagnoses included Bartholin gland cyst, epidermal inclu

Massive chest wall resection and reconstruction for malignant disease.

OBJECTIVE: Malignant chest wall tumors are rare neoplasms. Resection with wide-free margins is an important prognostic factor, and massive chest wall resection and reconstruction are often necessary. A recent case series of 20 consecutive patients is reported in order to find any possible correlation between tumor histology, extent of resection, type of reconstruction, and adjuvant treatment with short- and long-term outcomes. METHODS: Twenty patients were submitted to chest wall resection and reconstruction for malignant chest wall neoplasms between 2006 and 2014. The mean age (ten males) wa

Case Report: Acral MYH10::ALK fusion superficial mesenchymal neoplasm: first proof of metastatic potential.

BACKGROUND: Superficial ALK-rearranged soft tissue tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms showing heterogenous morphology and clinical behavior. They usually present as slowly enlarging nodules in young adults and can mimic other spindle cell tumors. While some ALK-altered mesenchymal neoplasms can be classified into defined WHO categories (e.g., inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma, and a few others), the nosology of many tumors has not yet been delineated, and they are currently reported descriptively. A case of a young man with a three-year follow-up is presen

Solitary fibrous tumour of the central nervous system: pathological study of eight cases and review of the literature.

AIMS: Solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) of the central nervous system are rare neoplasms that usually present as dura-based masses and clinically resemble meningiomas. Histologically, they can be similar to haemangiopericytoma or fibrous meningioma. We present herewith a pathological study of eight patients with SFT and compare our results with the published data. METHODS: All tumours diagnosed as SFT over a period of 15 years were retrieved from the files of La Rabta Hospital Department of Pathology, Tunisia. Routine histological sections were prepared from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded spe

Tenascin in reactive lymph nodes and in malignant lymphomas.

Tenascin is an extracellular matrix protein which accumulates in the stroma of various malignant and some benign neoplasms. This has been verified in several immunohistochemical studies. The distribution of tenascin immunoreactivity in lymphatic tissues and neoplasias, however, has not been thoroughly studied. In this investigation we analyzed tenascin immunoreactivity in several benign and malignant lymphatic lesions, including both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. In benign lymph nodes, faint reticular immunoreactivity could be observed in the lymphatic tissue. In benign reactive hyper

Extrapleural solitary fibrous tumor: a report of seven cases.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, spindle-cell neoplasms generally associated with the serosal surface, especially the pleura. Histopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and flow cytometric analyses were performed on seven SFTs of extrapleural sites (two retroperitoneal, two soft tissue, one each peritoneal, nasal cavity, and orbit). Five patients were women, and two were men, aged from 21 to 68 years (average, 39 yr). All of the lesions presented as well-circumscribed masses. The lesions ranged in size from 2 to 20 cm in greatest diameter. Histologically, these lesions were

KP1/CD68 expression in malignant neoplasms including lymphomas, sarcomas, and carcinomas.

Expression of KP1/CD68 macrophage-associated antigen in a series of 840 selected malignant neoplasms, including immunomorphologically characterized cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) (434), Hodgkin's disease (HD) (115), soft tissue sarcoma (147), carcinoma (49), and other tumors (95), was examined. KP1 expression was detected in a significant number of NHLs (107 of 434; 24.7%), most of them (65 of 107; 60.7%) of the diffuse small cell subtype. Only 14 of the 155 large cell lymphomas, compared to 10 of the 51 Ki-1/CD30+ anaplastic large cell (ALC) lymphomas examined, were KP1 positive. Conve

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the gastrointestinal tract: A clinicopathologic review and update.

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare mesenchymal lesion that has been documented throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal CFTs may occur at virtually any age, with a predilection for adults and for females. They occur most commonly in the stomach and the small and large intestines. CFTs are most often found incidentally, cured by local resection, and have a low risk of recurrence. Histology shows three characteristic features: Spindle cell proliferations within a densely hyalinized stroma, scattered calcifications, and lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. CFTs are immunoreactive
