Introduction: Mayo Adhesive Probability (MAP) score was developed as a means to predict the presence of adherent perinephric fat. Our aim was to determine the predictive value of the MAP score on surgical outcomes in patients undergoing standard adult percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data from 130 renal units that underwent PCNL between January 2022 and 2023. MAP scores 0-2 were classified as low, whereas MAP scores 3-5 were classified as high. The impact of the MAP score on perioperative and postoperative outcomes was studied. All sta

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is accompanied by somatic and visceral pain intraoperatively and postoperatively. However, pain management strategies lack a decisive consensus. Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) is a novel paraspinal fascial block that can be used in PCNL patients, and we aimed to investigate whether ESPB will reduce intraoperative and postoperative opioid consumption and postoperative pain scores in PCNL patients.
METHODS: The study was randomized, controlled, and open-label. Two groups were formed as the control group (GCont) and block group (Gblock), and pati

OBJECTIVE: Management of nephrolithiasis during pregnancy can be challenging because of the potential risks to the mother and fetus. Diagnosis and treatment can be a dilemma owing to the anatomical and physiological changes, besides the limitation in the use of X-rays. The aim of this article was to identify any case series or case reports where percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) was used as a treatment modality for nephrolithiasis in pregnancy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A review of the literature was performed using Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus from 1990 to October 2019. A search was con

Objective: To compare whether the outcomes of ultrasound-guided access percutaneous nephrolithotomy (USGA-PCNL) are similar to standard fluoroscopy-guided access percutaneous nephrolithotomy (FGA-PCNL). Methods: A review was developed by using the MEDLINE and Scopus databases and following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. Studies comparing the USGA-PCNL and the FGA-PCNL were included. Case reports, editorials and letters, unpublished studies, posters, and comments abstracts were excluded. Results: We found 12 published articles that compared USGA

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is generally performed using fluoroscopy, which is associated with exposure to radiation. Another drawback of fluoroscopic guided percutaneous nephrolithotomy is the prone position, which is not suitable for all patients. In this study we evaluated the feasibility, safety and efficacy of ultrasound guided percutaneous nephrolithotomy with the patient in the flank position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 603 patients with a mean ± SD age of 50.9 ± 13 years were included in this study from December 2010 to July 2016. Access to the collecting system and t

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficiency and safety of supracostal and subcostal approaches during miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPNL). In two tertiary academic centers, we retrospectively analyzed the charts of patients who had undergone mPNL between January 2011 and June 2015 for the treatment of renal stones. Enrolled in the study were 49 patients who had access through the supracostal area (Group 1) and, to serve as controls, 49 patients who were accessed through the subcostal area (Group 2). To avoid potential bias between the groups, the patients were retrospective

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neuraxial anaesthesia has recently become popular for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). We conducted a study comparing general anaesthesia (GA) with segmental (T6-T12) epidural anaesthesia (SEA) for PCNL with respect to anaesthesia and surgical characteristics.
METHODS: Ninety American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status-I and II patients undergoing PCNL randomly received either GA or SEA. Overall patient satisfaction was the primary end point. Intraoperative haemodynamics, epidural block characteristics, post-operative pain, time to rescue analgesic, total an

Background: Splenic urinoma has not been previously reported as a complication of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). Case Presentation: A 46-year-old Caucasian male underwent PNL for two large left renal stones. Surgery was performed in prone split-leg position, with access obtained through combined fluoroscopic guidance and direct ureteroscopic observation of the targeted calix. The tract was dilated to 30F using a pressure balloon, and complete clearance of stones was obtained through a combination of rigid and flexible nephroscopy, as well as antegrade ureteroscopy. The patient was left wi

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for large stone burden can be problematic in patients with significant risk of bleeding complications, specifically thrombocytopenia. This report demonstrates effective correction of two patients' thrombocytopenia, subsequently leading to removal of large stone burden through PCNL.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two Middle Eastern patients who presented with medical histories significant for thrombocytopenia, secondary to splenomegaly and hepatic vein thrombosis, and large volume nephrolithiasis. Patient 1 is a 65-year-old female with a right 5 c

UNLABELLED: The aim of the present study is to explore the anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, and anti-obesity potential of saffron petal extract (SPE) prepared through the hydro-alcoholic extraction method. Further partitioning was done with a series of polar and non-polar solvents to find out the most potent fraction of SPE against HCC. Organoleptic characterization depicted the color, odor, taste, and texture of the sub-fractions of SPE. Phytochemical, and pharmacognostic screening of these fractions revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, glycosides, and phenols. The quantit

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) was mostly performed with fluoroscopy and/or ultrasonography. The safety and feasibility of PCNL performed totally under ultrasound are not clearly defined. Therefore, we introduce the 9-year experience of 8 025 ultrasound guided PCNL procedures from multiple centers in China performed by the same surgeon, to evaluate the feasibility and security of this technique.
METHODS: From September 2004 to August 2013, 8 025 cases, 4 398 males (54.8%) and 3 627 females (45.2%), whose age ranged from 6 months to 85 years old, with upper urinary tract stone

Post percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) bleeding is an uncommon yet serious complication and is almost always related to a surgical cause. Nevertheless, medical cause of bleeding is rarely encountered as a cause of this dangerous complication. Dengue has been rarely reported as a cause of post operative bleeding. Bleeding diathesis in dengue occurs not only due to thrombocytopenia but also due to dysfunctional surviving platelets and increased fibrinolysis. We report a patient who developed bleeding after an uneventful PNL due to dengue hemorrhagic fever. Medical causes of bleeding such as loc

A patient was referred to our department for management of a renal pelvis "stone." During percutaneous nephrolithotomy, the stone was discovered to have formed around a Hem-o-lok clip, retained from a previous surgical procedure. As with other surgical foreign bodies, the Hem-o-lok acts as a nidus for stone formation if in prolonged contact with urine. It is radiolucent and therefore crucial to apply with caution in proximity to the urinary tract.

Two renal pelvic stones were removed percutaneously from a pelvic dystopic kidney using a transabdominal, transperitoneal approach. The puncture was made antegrade and controlled partly fluoroscopically and partly laparoscopically. Where the kidney was covered by bowels, these were displaced with forceps inserted through another laparoscopic trocar. The dilation and stone removal were performed traditionally. As the kidney was just behind the uterus, the authors considered extracorporeal lithotripsy contraindicated in this case, so the only minimally invasive resolution was percutaneous nephro

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) remains the gold standard for large and complex renal calculi. Although the prone position has traditionally been used since the introduction of PCNL in 1976, supine PCNL and its modifications have gained increasing acceptance with growing evidence supporting their efficacy and safety. This narrative review aims to compare supine and prone PCNL across various domains.
METHODS: Databases, PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were included. Priority was given to randomized-controlled trials, meta-analyses,
