Immunohistological study of the density and distribution of human penile neural tissue: gradient hypothesis.

Immunohistological patterns of density and distribution of neural tissue in the human penis, including the prepuce, are not fully characterized, and effects of circumcision (partial or total removal of the penile prepuce) on penile sexual sensation are controversial. This study analyzed extra- and intracavernosal innervation patterns on the main penile axes using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human adult and fetal penile tissues, single- and double-staining immunohistochemistry and a variety of neural and non-neural markers, with a special emphasis on the prepuce and potential sexual effec

Bezold-Jarisch reflex blunts arterial baroreflex via the shift of neural arc toward lower sympathetic nerve activity.

Although the Bezold-Jarisch (BJ) reflex is potentially evoked during acute myocardial ischemia or infarction, its effects on the static characteristics of the arterial baroreflex remain to be analyzed in terms of an equilibrium diagram between the neural and peripheral arcs. The neural arc represents the static input-output relationship between baroreceptor pressure input and efferent sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), whereas the peripheral arc represents that between SNA and arterial pressure (AP). In 8 anesthetized rabbits, we increased carotid sinus pressure stepwise from 40 to 160 mmHg in

Neural mechanisms of mindfulness: reduced neural reactivity to social-evaluative threat accounts for mindfulness intervention effects on inflammatory gene expression.

Mindful awareness redirects attention toward the present moment, which may reduce threat-related neural activity and downstream inflammation in response to stress. Social-evaluative threat, where the self is negatively judged by others, is a stressor with potent inflammatory consequences. As part of a randomized controlled trial (NCT05304052), the current study tested whether a mindfulness intervention reduced neural reactivity to social-evaluative threat and reduced downstream pro-inflammatory signaling. Healthy young adults were randomly assigned to a waitlist control group (n = 23) or a 6-w

Mixed Selectivity Coding of Content-Temporal Detail by Dorsomedial Posterior Parietal Neurons.

The dorsomedial posterior parietal cortex (dmPPC) is part of a higher-cognition network implicated in elaborate processes underpinning memory formation, recollection, episode reconstruction, and temporal information processing. Neural coding for complex episodic processing is however under-documented. Here, we recorded extracellular neural activities from three male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and revealed a set of neural codes of "neuroethogram" in the primate parietal cortex. Analyzing neural responses in macaque dmPPC to naturalistic videos, we discovered several groups of neurons that

Atypical neural variability in carriers of 16p11.2 copy number variants.

Copy number variations (CNVs) at the 16p11.2 chromosomal region are associated with myriad clinical features including intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. The aim of this study is to determine whether 16p11.2 deletion (DEL) and duplication (DUP) carriers demonstrate a distinct and reciprocal pattern of electroencephalography (EEG) activity as represented by neural variability measures. EEG data were previously collected as part of the Simons Variation in Individuals Project. Variability measures, as estimated by single-trial ERP and spectral power analyses in the alpha and be

Study of the L-Carnitine Effect on Myocardial Bioelectrical Activity by Microelectrode Arrays and Artificial Intelligence Application.

The article presents the results of applying artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze multichannel electrograms of bioelectrical activity registered by microelectrode arrays from myocardium of isolated rat hearts under the influence of L-carnitine and adrenaline. Localization of activation times on electrograms was performed using a new neural network model based on the U-Net architecture adapted for one-dimensional signal segmentation. In the organism, L-carnitine is necessary for the oxidation of fatty acids. But the effects of its supplemental intake on the cardiovascular system are st

Kinetic energy in random recurrent neural networks.

High-dimensional chaotic dynamics can emerge in a large random recurrent neural network when the synaptic gain crosses a threshold. Recent works showed that the kinetic energy of neural activity links the chaotic dynamics and the supporting unstable fixed points (equilibria) in the phase space. Here, we investigate the kinetic-energy-centric properties of random recurrent neural networks by combining dynamical mean-field theory with extensive numerical simulations. We find that the average kinetic energy shifts continuously from zero to a positive value at the known critical value of coupling

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation and Its Effects on Sympathetic Nervous System Activation.

Cardiovascular modulation in response to movement and gravitational forces can be influenced by vestibular input or peripheral baroreflex mechanisms. Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a widely used, noninvasive method for activating neural pathways within the vestibular system, as well as associated pathways such as vestibulo-spinal, oculomotor, and vestibulo-autonomic circuits. Research on vestibulo-autonomic function via GVS has primarily focused on its effects on cardiovascular modulation and sympathetic muscle and nerve activity. However, inconsistencies in GVS application protocols

Macroscopic Neural Oscillation during Skilled Reaching Movements in Humans.

The neural mechanism of skilled movements, such as reaching, has been considered to differ from that of rhythmic movement such as locomotion. It is generally thought that skilled movements are consciously controlled by the brain, while rhythmic movements are usually controlled autonomously by the spinal cord and brain stem. However, several studies in recent decades have suggested that neural networks in the spinal cord may also be involved in the generation of skilled movements. Moreover, a recent study revealed that neural activities in the motor cortex exhibit rhythmic oscillations correspo

Effect of human mesenchymal stem cell transplantation on cerebral ischemic volume-controlled photothrombotic mouse model.

Various animal models of stroke have been developed to simulate the human stroke with the development of the ischemic method facilitates preclinical stroke research. The photothrombotic ischemia model, based on the intravascular photochemical reaction, is widely used for in vivo studies. However, this study has limitations, which generated a relatively small-sized infarction model on superficial cortex compared to that of the MCAO stroke model. In this study, the photothorombosis mouse model is adapted and the optimum conditions for generation of cell death and deficits with high reproducibili

Evaluation of command algorithms for control of upper-extremity neural prostheses.

Five new command control algorithms were created to enable increased control over grasp force in upper-extremity neural prostheses. Most of these algorithms took advantage of the ability to lock or assign a steady command value to the hand neural prosthesis. Five able-bodied subjects tested the algorithms by using a shoulder controller that controlled a video-simulated hand to repeatedly complete a consistent evaluation task. A generalized estimating equations-based linear model was used to analyze the data. The algorithms were ranked via contrast analyses between the coefficient values from t

Spina bifida occulta in homozygous Patch mouse embryos.

In normal embryos, mRNA encoding platelet-derived growth factor A (PDGF A) and the platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFR alpha) are found within and adjacent to the site of vertebral development, the sclerotome. These patterns of expression are consistent with PDGF action on the developing sclerotome and dermis. Homozygous Patch (Ph) mutant mouse embryos lack the receptor gene (Pdgfra) due to an extensive deletion at that locus. Consistent with the spatial pattern of Pdgfra expression, striking deformities are found in the spine and ribcage of Ph/Ph embryos. In particular, we sh

Cancer Neuroscience: From Local Neuro-Immune Microenvironments to Systemic Brain-Body Circuitry.

Classic oncological models have largely restricted cancer pathogenesis to autonomous genetic mutations within localized cells. Current research, however, reframes solid tumors as structurally integrated "pseudo-organs" that rely on host neural networks for survival. This review examines the reciprocal signaling networks connecting nervous, immune, and malignant cells within the tumor microenvironment. At the tissue level, we outline how tumors construct de novo neural architecture via axonogenesis, cellular plasticity, and the assembly of functional neuro-neoplastic synapses. Expanding beyond

Disrupted functional connectome in a rodent model of autism during social isolation.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with disruptions in social behavior and the neural circuitry behind it. Very little data is available on the mechanisms that are responsible for the lack of motivation to reunite with conspecifics during isolation. It is as important to investigate the neural changes that reduce motivation to end social isolation, as those underlying the reactions to social stimuli. Using a rodent model of prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure, we investigated how social isolation affects the neural activation of key brain nuclei involved in social processing and st

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation modulates fear memory extinction and neural responses in humans.

Previous research has shown that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) promotes declarative fear extinction, but its neural mechanisms in this process are still unclear. This study aimed to explore tVNS's impacts on physiological (skin conductance response [SCR]) and neural (event-related potentials, ERP) fear-related responses. Forty healthy participants were randomly assigned to the tVNS or Sham group. During a fear-conditioned memory paradigm, electroencephalograph (EEG) and SCR were measured. We analyzed SCR amplitude, ERP components, EEG signal spectral analysis, and the
