Dermoid Cyst of Tongue Masquerading as a Lingual Neurofibroma.

Dermoid cysts of the tongue are rare lesions of the head-and-neck region with only 16 reported cases in the English literature to date. We describe a 5-year-old girl who presented with a swelling in her tongue. Imaging done earlier was reported as a neurofibroma. It turned out to be a dermoid cyst. This was the first such case at our institute and this article reviews the literature and describes the said case in detail.

Distinguishing Neurofibroma From Desmoplastic Melanoma: The Value of p53.

Distinguishing desmoplastic melanomas (DMs) from neurofibromas (NFs) can be histologically challenging in some cases. To date, a reliable marker to differentiate the 2 entities has remained elusive. S100 subtyping and CD34 fingerprinting have been proposed, but controversy remains as to their reliability. Missense mutations in TP53 are often found in DMs, resulting in a dominant negative effect and paradoxical accumulation of the tumor suppressor protein p53. We hypothesized that p53 may be expressed differentially in DMs, making it a valuable tool in differentiating DMs from NFs. Using immuno…

Contributions of inflammation and tumor microenvironment to neurofibroma tumorigenesis.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 associates with multiple neoplasms, and the Schwann cell tumor neurofibroma is the most prevalent. A hallmark feature of neurofibroma is mast cell infiltration, which is recruited by chemoattractant stem cell factor (SCF) and has been suggested to sustain neurofibroma tumorigenesis. In the present study, we use new, genetically engineered Scf mice to decipher the contributions of tumor-derived SCF and mast cells to neurofibroma development. We demonstrate that mast cell infiltration is dependent on SCF from tumor Schwann cells. However, removal of mast cells by depleti…

Intraparotid Neurofibroma of the Facial Nerve: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Intraparotid neurofibromas of the facial nerve are extremely rare and mostly associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). CASE REPORT: This is a case of a healthy 40-year-old man, which underwent surgery for a preoperatively diagnosed benign parotid gland lesion. After identification of the facial nerve main trunk, a single large mass (6 x 3 cm) incorporating the upper nerve division was observed. The nerve portion involved in the mass could not be dissected and was inevitably sacrificed with immediate neuroraphy of the upper division of the facial nerve with 6/0 prolene. The…

Immortalization of human normal and NF1 neurofibroma Schwann cells.

Neurofibromas, which are benign Schwann cell tumors, are the hallmark feature in the autosomal dominant condition neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and are associated with biallelic loss of NF1 gene function. There is a need for effective therapies for neurofibromas, particularly the larger, plexiform neurofibromas. Tissue culture is an important tool for research. However, it is difficult to derive enriched human Schwann cell cultures, and most enter replicative senescence after 6-10 passages, impeding cell-based research in NF1. Through exogenous expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase …

A childhood case of solitary intrascrotal and extratesticular neurofibroma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features, treatment and outcome of functioning adrenocortical tumours in children, and to assess the value of tumour size as a marker for malignant potential. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one children (mean age at presentation 4.9 years, range 0.6-11; 12 girls and nine boys) who presented with a functioning adrenal mass over a 29-year period (1972-2000) were assessed. Clinicopathological features and outcome information were obtained from a structured review of the case-notes. Before 1980 the diagnosis and staging was mainly obtained by intravenous pyelogra

Hemimacroglossia caused by isolated plexiform neurofibroma: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: The present case is a diffuse isolated plexiform neurofibroma of the tongue that was not associated with neurofibromatosis that we treated with intraoral surgery. STUDY DESIGN: A case report. METHODS: We present a 5-year-old girl with isolated plexiform neurofibroma of the tongue with infiltration of the tongue base and review treatment approaches for this very rare tumor. RESULTS: An intraoral approach appears to be a good alternative method that allows both an acceptable exposure for total excision and limited postoperative sequelae. CONCLUSIONS: Isolated plexiform neurofibro…

Plexiform neurofibroma of the cheek mucosa. A case report.

The case reported deals with a solitary plexiform neurofibroma affecting the cheek submucosa. Neurofibroma is an uncommon tumor which rarely appears in oral cavity but it represents the most common neurogenic tumor. Furthermore, plexiform variety is less frequent. Clinically, oral neurofibromas usually appears as anodyne and asintomatic lesions. Sometimes, they produce nervous compression. In this case, tumor is big but asintomatic. There is no definitive radiologic image. It has association with polyglandular syndromes and phacomatosis. The treatment of choice is excision. There are doubts of…

[Neurofibroma plexiforme of the small pelvis: a case report].

There are reports of rare cases of nerve tissue tumors of the small bowel, ovary, urinary bladder or retroperitoneal space. We report a case of neurofibroma plexiforme of pelvis minoris in 42-year-old woman. The first diagnosis was adnexal tumor. Laparotomy was performed and a big, solid tumor of left parametrium was found. The histology of the tumor was described as neurofibroma plexiforme. There was also an inflammatory tumor of appendix involving right Fallopian tube. The described by other authors cases suggest, that diagnosis of nerve tissue tumors in pelvis minoris is very difficult. Sur…

Mesenteric neurofibroma with von Recklinghausen's disease: a case report.

Mesenteric neurofibroma associated with von Recklinghausen's disease is rare. Herein, we present one such case. A 15-year-old mentally retarded Japanese boy presented with destruction of the right 2nd and 3rd ribs on a routine chest roentgenogram. Physical examination revealed a funnel chest and multiple cafe-au-lait spots, but no cutaneous nodules. Although the patient had no symptoms, a computed tomography (CT) and angiogram were performed. There were no definitive findings of malignancy in the tumors. However, since there were two risk factors for malignancy, specifically, a young age at th…

Intraoperative discovery of a neurofibroma during routine ptosis surgery.

A noncosmetic blepharoplasty with levator tuck was planned to repair a congenital ptosis presumed to be caused by levator maldevelopment. During surgery a mass was found in the lid, revealing the ptosis to be mechanical in nature. Biopsy and subsequent pathological exam revealed this to be a plexiform neurofibroma in a reportedly undiagnosed patient.

Analysis of intratumor heterogeneity in Neurofibromatosis type 1 plexiform neurofibromas and neurofibromas with atypical features: Correlating histological and genomic findings.

Plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors involving large nerves present in 30%-50% Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients. Atypical neurofibromas (ANF) are distinct nodular lesions with atypical features on histology that arise from PNFs. The risk and timeline of malignant transformation in ANF is difficult to assess. A recent NIH workshop has stratified ANFs and separated a subgroup with multiple atypical features and higher risk of malignant transformation termed atypical neurofibromatous neoplasms with uncertain biological potential (ANNUBP). We performed an…

Neurofibroma of the external genitalia, extreme enlargement of the clitoris.

Neurofibromatosis of the genitourinary tract is rare, with a prevalence of 0.65%, and it is exceedingly rare to involve the external genitalia. Involvement of the clitoris, labia majora, and prepuce was reported with clitoromegaly being the most frequently occurring. Herein, we are reporting the case of a 6-year-old girl who was diagnosed with a neurofibroma of the clitoris; measuring 9.4 cm in its largest dimension. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest clitoral neurofibroma reported in the literature. Due to the rarity of such cases and reports limitations in the literature, the …

Neurofibroma with adenosis in the mammary gland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibroma of the breast is extremely rare, with only a few reported cases. Here, we report a case of solitary neurofibroma of the breast in a 95-year-old woman. CASE PRESENTATION: A 95-year-old woman presented with a palpable mass in the left breast. Mammography revealed a well-defined mass. A 1.6-cm round mass was found in the lower outer quadrant of the left breast on ultrasonography. The internal echo of the tumor was a mixture of relatively uniform hypoechoic areas with posterior enhancement and heterogeneous hyperechoic areas. She underwent a core needle biopsy. The pathol…
