Segmental distribution of nodules on trunk.

A 70-year-old Caucasian man presented with a longstanding history of numerous nontender, fleshy, skin-colored papules on his trunk, ranging from 3 to 8 mm in size. They were noted incidentally during an examination of unrelated nonhealing lesions on the patient's left cheek. He said the lesions on his trunk first appeared when he was 28 years old and had continued to grow in size and number. The patient said his son had at least one similar lesion on his upper back, but otherwise there was no family history of these lesions. A biopsy was performed on one of the nodules. WHAT IS YOUR DIAGNOSIS?

Pediatric intramedullary schwannoma without neurofibromatosis: case report.

Pediatric intramedullary schwannoma without neurofibromatosis is extremely rare with only five cases reported so far. We present this rare finding in an 10-year-old boy who presented with a sudden onset of weakness in the lower limbs. An intraoperative diagnosis of schwannoma enabled us to carry out a total excision of the tumor, which resulted in near complete recovery at 10 months follow-up. Although rare, this diagnosis should be considered when a child presents with a solitary intramedullary tumor since its total resection can be achieved improving surgical outcome.

Kyphosis of the thoracic and thoracolumbar spine in the pediatric patient: normal sagittal parameters and scope of the problem.

As measured by the Cobb angle, normal sagittal kyphosis is 20 degrees to 40 degrees, which encompasses most of the angulated consecutive vertebrae in the thoracic region of the spine. With pathologic kyphosis, however, the segmental analysis of different regions of the thoracic spine plays an important role. Methods of determining sagittal measurements as well as the causes of kyphosis of the thoracic and thoracolumbar spine, including Scheuermann's disease, spinal cord injury, laminectomy, neurofibromatosis, genetic origins, Marfan syndrome, and tuberculosis, are also important in determining

Protein-losing enteropathy caused by mesenteric vascular involvement of neurofibromatosis.

A 44-year-old man with neurofibromatosis suffered from severe diarrhea and progressive hypoproteinemia. Enteric protein loss was confirmed by an alpha 1-antitrypsin clearance test. An x-ray study showed irregular mucosa in the distal segment of the ileum. Protein loss has subsided after ileocecal resection. Laparotomy and radiological examinations failed to demonstrate neurofibroma or other tumors in the abdomen. The resected ileum revealed marked edema of the wall and a pseudomembranous enteritis-like appearance in the luminal surface. Microscopically, lymphatic vessels in the intestinal wall

[A case report of giant neurofibromatosis of maxillofacial, neck and chest was treated by multidisciplinary cooperation].

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary neurological disorder. One of the typical manifestations of NF1 is neurofibroma, which can develop gradually over time. When the volume exceeds 100 cm², it is referred to as giant neurofibroma, representing a tumor-like proliferation of Schwann cells within the nerve fiber sheath. The Department of Otolaryngology at the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University received a rare case involving a patient with giant neurofibromatosis affecting the maxillofacial region, neck, and chest. The patient underwent successful sur

Classification of schwannomas and the new naming convention for "neurofibromatosis-2": Genetic updates and international consensus recommendation.

Despite their similar nomenclature, Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and "Neurofibromatosis type 2" are discrete and clinically distinguishable entities. The name of "neurofibromatosis type 2" has been changed to NF2-related schwannomatosis, to reflect the fact that neurofibromas do not occur in this syndrome and therefore the name "Neurofibromatosis" is factually incorrect. Furthermore, multiple schwannomas, a hallmark feature of NF2, can also occur in patients with mutations in genes including SMARCB1 and LZTR1, all exhibiting overlapping clinical features. Current understanding suggests that

[Molecular Pathogenesis, Genetic Profiles, and Therapeutic Strategies for NF2-Related Schwannomatosis].

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), now redefined as NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN), is a hereditary tumor syndrome characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas, multiple meningiomas, and other central nervous system tumors. The revised diagnostic criteria incorporate genetic testing and consideration of somatic mosaicism, enabling a more accurate and earlier diagnosis. A strong genotype-phenotype correlation has been established: truncating mutations are associated with an earlier onset and severe clinical course, whereas missense or splice-site mutations are often linked to milder ph

Improved sensitivity for detection of pathogenic variants in familial NF2-related schwannomatosis.

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of additional genetic screening techniques on the rate of detection of pathogenic variants leading to familial NF2-related schwannomatosis. METHODS: We conducted genetic screening of a cohort of 168 second-generation individuals meeting the clinical criteria for NF2-related schwannomatosis. In addition to the current clinical screening techniques, targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification analysis, we applied additional genetic screening techniques, including karyotype and RNA analysis. For characterisation

Transmaxillary approach for resection of maxillary division trigeminal schwannoma at foramen rotundum.

BACKGROUND: The foramen rotundum and anterior cavernous sinus have traditionally been accessed by transcranial approaches that are limited by the high density of critical neurovascular structures. The transmaxillary approach provides an entirely extradural route to the foramen rotundum and anterior cavernous sinus. METHOD: This patient with neurofibromatosis and facial pain with trigeminal schwannoma at the foramen rotundum was successfully treated by transmaxillary resection of the tumor. This approach allowed for a direct extradural access to the pathology, with bony decompression and tumor

Intraoral neurofibroma: A case report with emphasis on immunohistochemical markers.

A neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. They occur in combination with neurofibromatosis or as a solitary mass. Intraoral neurofibromas pose diagnostic difficulties, suggesting the appropriate use of diagnostic markers and clinical knowledge. Here, we report a case of intraoral neurofibroma in a 57-year-old female who reported with the complaint of painless growth in the lower left back tooth region for the past three years. Based on the clinical features, provisional diagnosis of traumatic fibroma was made. However, histopathology proved it to be a benign spindle cell lesion

Updated protocol for genetic testing, screening and clinical management of individuals at risk of NF2-related schwannomatosis.

Genetic testing and management of individuals at risk for NF2-related schwannomatosis is complicated by the high rate of mosaicism resulting in a milder, later onset, more asymmetrical disease and the phenotypic overlap with the related schwannomatosis conditions. This updated protocol has been devised for the English NF2-related schwannomatosis service. It provides those affected with mosaic NF2-related schwannomatosis estimated risks of having an affected child; and management guidelines both for individuals at risk of NF2-related schwannomatosis, or with potential disease, due to having fea

Malignant Cerebellopontine Angle Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor with Divergent Mesenchymal (Cartilaginous) Differentiation Presenting with Catastrophic Hemorrhage: Case Report and Review.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the cerebellopontine angle are rare, especially even outside of the context of neurofibromatosis or malignant transformation of previously radiated vestibular schwannomas. This case report describes a case of a presumed vestibular schwannoma without previous radiation or history of neurofibromatosis presenting with progressive hearing loss, facial weakness, growth, and ultimately catastrophic hemorrhage requiring urgent surgery. Histopathology revealed an exceptionally rare malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with divergent mesenchymal (chondrosa

Gene-targeted therapy for neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis: The path to clinical trials.

Numerous successful gene-targeted therapies are arising for the treatment of a variety of rare diseases. At the same time, current treatment options for neurofibromatosis 1 and schwannomatosis are limited and do not directly address loss of gene/protein function. In addition, treatments have mostly focused on symptomatic tumors, but have failed to address multisystem involvement in these conditions. Gene-targeted therapies hold promise to address these limitations. However, despite intense interest over decades, multiple preclinical and clinical issues need to be resolved before they become a

Mapping the Landscape of Neurofibromatosis: A Bibliometric Evaluation Highlighting Our Current Understanding, Emerging Therapies, and Global Research Trends.

BACKGROUND: The literature on neurofibromatosis (NF) has never been systematically assessed using bibliometric analytic methodologies. We quantitatively analyzed the major trends and scientific output regarding NF, highlighting potential avenues for research. METHODS: An Elsevier's Scopus database search was performed for all indexed studies related to NF from 1898 to 2021. Validated bibliometric parameters were analyzed using productivity, citation, and keyword analysis, including text mining, content analysis, and collaboration network mapping from inception to date on R 4.1.2. RESULTS: Ou
