Distillery sewage sludge (DSS), a typical organic byproduct generated during the production of Chinese Baijiu, has attracted increasing attention for its potential in agricultural resource utilization. However, the ecological effects of different DSS application methods on rhizosphere soil remain unclear. Using brewing sorghum rhizosphere soil as the research object, four application modes (unfertilized control, CK; spherical basal application, BF; spherical lateral application, LF; and powdered mixed application, MF) were comparatively evaluated for their impacts on soil nutrients, enzyme act

With the increasing industrial activity of the growing human population, the accumulation of various contaminants in soil, including heavy metals, has increased rapidly. Heavy metals as non-biodegradable elements persist in the soil environment and may pollute crop plants, further accumulating in the human body causing serious conditions. Hence, phytoremediation of land contamination as an environmental restoration technology is desirable for both human health and broad-sense ecology. Legumes (Fabaceae), which play a special role in nitrogen cycling, are dominant plants in contaminated areas.

The effects of various irradiances of artificial UV-B (280-315 nm) in the presence or absence of visible light (photosynthetically active radiation) on growth, survival, 14CO2 uptake and ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBISCO) activity were studied in the N2-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena BT2. We tested the hypothesis whether or not visible radiation offers any protection against UV-B-induced deleterious effects on growth and photosynthesis in Anabaena BT2. Attempts were also made to determine the irradiances of UV-B where inhibitory effects could be mitigated by simultaneous irradiati

Mixotrophy, the combination of heterotrophic and autotrophic nutrition modes, is emerging as the rule rather than the exception in marine photosynthetic plankton. Trichodesmium, a prominent diazotroph ubiquitous in the (sub)tropical oceans, is generally considered to obtain energy via autotrophy. While the ability of Trichodesmium to use dissolved organic phosphorus when deprived of inorganic phosphorus sources is well known, the extent to which this important cyanobacterium may benefit from other dissolved organic matter (DOM) resources is unknown. Here we provide evidence of carbon-, nitroge

Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous phototrophic bacteria that inhabit diverse environments across the planet. Seasonally, they dominate many eutrophic lakes impacted by excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) forming dense accumulations of biomass known as cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms or cyanoHABs. Their dominance in eutrophic lakes is attributed to a variety of unique adaptations including N and P concentrating mechanisms, N₂ fixation, colony formation that inhibits predation, vertical movement via gas vesicles, and the production of toxic or otherwise bioactive molecules. While some of these

Endophytic bacteria play an important role in plant growth promotion and stress tolerance, offering sustainable alternatives to chemical inputs in agriculture. In this study, an endophytic bacterial strain P1 was isolated and identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri, a plant-associated bacterium exhibiting multiple plant growth-promoting traits (PGPTs). Biochemical (qualitative and quantitative) and in vitro analyses demonstrated nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, ammonia production, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, biofilm formation, and tolerance to abiotic stresses, including sali

Gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx), which result from the combustion of fossil fuels, volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and biological reactions in soils, not only affect air quality and the atmospheric concentration of ozone, but also contribute to global warming and acid rain. Soil NOx emissions have been largely ascribed to soil microbiological processes; but there is no proof of abiotic catalytic activity affecting soil NO emissions. We provide evidence of gas exchange in soils involving emissions of NOx by photochemical reactions, and their counterpart fixation through photocatalytic reactions

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a predominant constraint on plant growth in acidified soils, largely due to the sequestration of P by toxic aluminum (Al) compounds. Indigenous phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSBs) capable of mobilizing Al-P in these soils hold significant promise. A novel Al-P-solubilizing strain, Al-P Nguyenibacter sp. L1, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of healthy Lespedeza bicolor plants indigenous to acidic terrains. However, our understanding of the genomic landscape of bacterial species within the genus Nguyenibacter remains in its infancy. To further explore its b

Increasing concerns over excessive agrochemical use, the emergence of resistant phytopathogens, and the impacts of climate variability on crop productivity have increased interest in plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as promising biological alternatives for sustainable crop production. Pseudomonas spp. are among the most extensively studied PGPR due to their remarkable metabolic diversity, strong rhizosphere colonization, and multifunctional roles in enhancing plant nutrition, improving stress tolerance, and suppressing plant diseases. These Gram-negative bacteria enhance plant growt

Iron parent imides serve as key intermediates for iron-promoted nitrogen fixation and ammonia oxidation. However, these active species are difficult to be isolated, and their reactivities are underexplored. So far, only a few multinuclear iron parent imides were reported, but none plays a key intersection during the bidirectional transformation. Herein, we adopt the bulky 1,2,4-tri(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienyl (Cp') and bidentate 1,3-propanedithiolate (pdt) ligand to provide the steric protection for the reactive [Fe2S2] scaffold. As predicted, the highly active imido species can be captured by

Bacteriol. 88:233-241. 1964.-The course of experimental coccicioidomycosis in rabbits was followed with complement-fixation (CF) tests. Uniformity of complement-fixing antibody response to large infective doses was observed, and levels as high as 1:4,096 in the New Zealand albino and 1:16,384 in the Dutch rabbit were attained. Mortality reflected the size of the inoculum rather than the level of CF titer. Animal

Long-term fertilization can result in the changes in carbon (C) cycle in the maize rhizosphere soil. However, there have been few reports on the impacts of microbial regulatory mechanisms on the C cycle in soil. In the study, we analyzed the response of functional genes that regulate the C fixation, decomposition and methane (CH4) metabolism in maize rhizosphere soil to different fertilization treatments using metagenomics analysis. As the dominant C fixation pathway in maize rhizosphere soil, the abundance of the functional genes regulating the reductive citrate cycle (rTCA cycle) including k

INTRODUCTION: Ambrosia trifida, a harmful invasive plant, poses significant ecological and economic threats and is expected to spread further under future warming and nitrogen deposition scenarios. According to plant-soil feedback and enhanced mutualist hypothesis, invasive plants may gain a competitive edge by recruiting specific microorganisms. However, little is known about the composition and functional potential of its rhizosphere microbiome.
METHODS: In this study, we combined metagenomics with widely targeted metabolomics to investigate the interactions between root exudates and soil m

The increasing coexistence of microplastics and metals in agricultural soils poses a profound threat to ecosystem health, yet the mechanisms through which combined pollution affects nitrogen cycling remain poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of three polylactic acid (PLA) particle sizes (4 mm, 150 μm, and 500 nm) at a concentration of 1%, individually and in combination with cadmium (Cd, 3.0 mg/kg), on nitrogen transformation in the pea-soil system. Results showed that nano-PLA significantly promoted pea growth, for example, increasing biomass by 11.6% (3.19 g), compared t

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) return is a vital strategy for agricultural waste recycling and soil fertility improvement, yet its ecological impacts of duration remain poorly understood. This study employed metagenomic sequencing to explore soil fertility, microbial dynamics, and nitrogen cycling across different SMS return durations (0, 1, and 3 years) within rice-mushroom crop rotation systems. Soil nutrients (organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus) initially decreased and then increased throughout the rice growth cycle. The one-year return (y1) induced early nutrient depletion, w

Vascular plants may employ several physiological mechanisms to stabilize their protein contents as atmospheric CO2 concentrations change over a day, year, decade, or century. One mechanism is that plants may rely more on soil ammonium as their nitrogen source when CO2 increases. Another is that plants may convert more nitrate into amino acids in their roots. A third is that plants may increase the ratio of manganese over magnesium in their chloroplasts and accelerate a previously unrecognized biochemical cycle that generates organic acids such as malate instead of carbohydrates. This proposed

Biogeochemical cycles exert significant influences on the fate and behavior of antibiotics in estuarine and coastal environments; however, ferrous sulfide (FeS)-mediated enrichment and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted microcosm experiments and field investigations to examine the relationships of FeS amendment, microbial communities, functional potentials in relation to elemental cycling, and ARG abundance. The positive effects of FeS on ARG abundance were aerobic dependent, which were accompanied by a significant enrichment of Pro

Legumes have developed a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria known collectively as rhizobia, which when present in root nodules fix atmospheric nitrogen into a form usable by the plant. The functioning unit of symbiotic nitrogen fixation is referred to as the symbiosome and the membrane separating symbionts acts to regulate the metabolite exchange within the root nodule cells. The efflux of fixed nitrogen from the symbiosome is through an unidentified non-selective cation channel, which is inwardly rectified by cytosolic Mg2+ and has a preference for ammonium. Expression of Nodulin 26 (N

BACKGROUND: In the current agricultural model, the massive use of chemical fertilizer causes environmental and economic losses. Inoculation of plant-growth-promoting (PGP) nitrogen-fixing bacteria is an alternative to the use of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. In this study, rhizobia strains isolated from common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) root nodules were evaluated in an effort to identify an efficient nitrogen-fixing rhizobia strain able to improve bean germination and growth.
RESULTS: Common bean plants were collected from seven sites in southern Brazil, and 210 native rhizo

Driven by sustainable electricity, electrochemical nitrogen fixation under ambient conditions is considered as a promising strategy to generate low-concentrated NH3/NH4+. Under the principle of doping and porous engineering, nitrogen-doped carbon microsphere with hierarchical pores (NC-HP) is fabricated via pyrolyzing polymer microsphere. Hierarchical structure with macro-, meso- and micropores is obtained by assembling melamine/phenol-formaldehyde oligomers in Pickering droplets, with the assistance of triblock copolymer Pluronic F127. The regularity of mesopores is strongly affected by melam
