Radiologic and pathologic characteristics of benign and malignant lesions of the mandible.

Mandibular lesions develop from both odontogenic and nonodontogenic origins and have varying degrees of destructive potential. Common benign cystic lesions include periapical (radicular) cysts, follicular (dentigerous) cysts, and odontogenic keratocysts. Benign solid tumors represent a broad spectrum of lesions such as ameloblastomas, odontomas, ossifying fibromas, and periapical cemental dysplasia. Malignant tumors that often involve the mandible include squamous cell carcinomas, osteosarcomas, and metastatic tumors. In addition, vascular lesions such as hemangiomas and arteriovenous malforma

A brief insight regarding Nasopalatine duct cyst- Report of two cases with a review of literature.

Nasopalatine duct cysts (NPDCs) are among the most common nonodontogenic cysts, typically located in the midline of anterior maxillary hard palate. They usually arise from the embryonic epithelial vestiges of the nasopalatine duct. NPDCs predominantly affect adult males, generally during their fourth decade of life. Clinically, they present as asymptomatic or occasionally painful, fluctuant or discharging swellings involving the hard palate. Radiographically, NPDCs are characterized by a well-defined, fairly corticated, inverted pear-shaped or heart-shaped radiolucency situated between the roo…

Dental infection simulating skin lesion.

Orocutaneous fistulas or cutaneous sinus, a tract of dental origin, is an uncommon but well-documented condition that usually requires emergency treatment. Such condition may be misdiagnosed by physicians and dentists and may sometimes be confused with bone and skin tumor, osteomyelitis, congenital fistula, salivary gland fistula, pyogenic granuloma, infected cyst, deep mycotic infection, and other pathologies. A case of facial sinus tract that was initially misdiagnosed by a physician as a nonodontogenic lesion is presented. Nonsurgical endodontic therapy was the treatment of choice for this

Dental health examination and the pediatrician: an orientation to dental health according to developmental age groups.

There are a variety of oral/dental findings presented in the oral cavities of children that are of interest to the examining pediatrician. There are oral pathologic conditions and soft tissues anomalies. These include developmental anomalies and variations of the soft tissue, benign mucosal lesions, benign mesenchymal lesions, cysts and pseudocysts, odontogenic cysts and neoplasms of the jaws, benign nonodontogenic neoplasms of the jaws, and inflammatory lesions in bone. There are anomalies in the developing dentitions of children that a pediatrician needs to be aware of also. These include an

Jaw cysts diagnosed in an Italian population over a 20-year period.

BACKGROUND: Cysts of the jaws (JCs) are an important topic of oral pathology, but few epidemiological data are present in the literature, in particular about the potential of recurrence. The aim of this study was to describe a case series of JCs from a single institution, evaluating the frequency, the site, the age distribution, and the percentage of recurrence of all types of JCs. METHODS: All JCs present in the histological records of the Section of Anatomic Pathology of the University of Bologna at Bellaria Hospital from 1992 to 2012 were retrieved. RESULTS: A total of 1136 jaws cysts wer

Epithelial jaw cysts: 10 years of the WHO classification.

Numerous papers on epithelial jaw cysts have appeared in the decade since the publication in 1971 of the WHO histological classification of odontogenic tumours, jaw cysts, and allied lesions. Despite clarification of certain cyst varieties no major revisions are necessary. The following minor modifications are proposed. In the developmental odontogenic group, the terms keratocyst and follicular are preferred to primordial and dentigerous. The alveolar cyst of infants is categorised separately from the gingival cyst of adults. The developmental lateral periodontal cyst is included as a distinct

[Nasolabial cyst].

Nasolabial cyst is a rare epithelial and non-odontogenic cyst of the jaw. It is situated behind the ala nasi, extending backwards into the inferior nasal meatus and forward into the labio-gingival sulcus. Predominant symptoms are swelling of the nasal vestibule, local pain, and nasal obstruction. Radiology is not specific and CT scan may be contributive. Surgical excision is the first line treatment; it proves the diagnosis and prevents recurrence.

Nasolabial cyst: case report.

The nasolabial cyst is classified as a fissural cyst, found outside the bone, and on the region corresponding to the nasolabial furrow and alar nose. This cyst is frequently asymptomatic with the most usual sign being alar nose elevation. In spite of the low occurrence of nasolabial cysts, it is important to recognize the clinical characteristics of this lesion. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature and discuss the histomorphology and etiology of this condition, showing treatment by surgical excision.
