Observational and interview data obtained from nurse caregivers and family members of patients with late-stage Alzheimer's disease were analyzed to explicate the nursing role in advance proxy planning. A four-phase model, Achieving Consensus: Decision Making to Determine Treatment Options for Patients with Alzheimer's Disease, was developed. Patient decline, family coping, professional development of nursing staff, and nursing unit philosophy were community characteristics found to be important antecedents to the process of reaching consensus. Achieving consensus constructs included interactiv

PURPOSE: Missed nursing care is a condition that is likely to be encountered frequently in the surgical care process and is generally related to the educational and emotional needs of the patients. Perception of and witnessing missed care can affect nursing images, expectations, and experiences by causing nursing students to experience professional disappointment. The purpose of the study was to explore nursing students' perception of perioperative missed nursing care (PMNC) according to "role theory" and Benner's "novice to expert" theories.
DESIGN: The study used a qualitative design based

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of psychotropic medication on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) is limited, while associated with a higher risk of adverse events. Non-pharmacological treatment of BPSD is advocated as treatment of first choice. However, many general practitioners (GPs) find it difficult to initiate deprescribing, and when attempting to discontinue psychotropic medication in nursing home residents, they face many barriers. Therefore, we hypothesize that an intervention aimed at improving communication with and involvement of nursing home staff, relatives, an

Simulation is an innovative teaching strategy that supports student centered learning. It improves therapeutic communication skills with clients. Additionally, it enhances critical thinking, problem solving, and confidence among students, in a non-threatening and safe environment, without posing a risk to actual patients. This paper describes the process of application of simulation for undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a mental health nursing course. The project aimed to determine the significance of simulation to improve the communication skills and confidence level, and to decrease

Healthcare systems internationally are working under increasing demand to use finite resources with greater efficiency. The drive for efficiency utilises process improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma. This study outlines a pilot Lean Six Sigma intervention designed to release nursing time to care within a peri-operative environment; this was achieved by collaborating with stakeholders to redesign the process for laparoscopic hernia surgical case preparation (set up) material. Across 128 laparoscopic hernia surgical cases, the pilot resulted in a 55% decrease in overall nursing time

Current nursing literature recognizes the need to honor the concept of ambiguity. Nurses experience uncertainty with handling or honoring complexity and ambiguity when confronted with times of struggle. Traditional models of care fall short as patients and families define their expectations of the healthcare system. Nurses bear witness to the discomfort caused by the unknown in their daily practice. They are challenged to address their feelings, unsure of what to anticipate, what to say, or how to respond to their patients. Uncertainty diminishes the opportunity for meaningful dialogue between

BACKGROUND-OBJECTIVE: In 2015 almost 2.9 million people in Germany received nursing care insurance benefits. More than 27% of those in need of long-term care lived in inpatient care facilities. Of the residents 6% included in the examination by the Medical Services of the Leading Association of Healthcare Insurances (MDS) had chronic wounds or bedsores requiring treatment. The aim of the study was to gain insights into care decisions and the research question was: what is the process of wound care in nursing homes?

The use of cocaine is increasing in the United States. An increasing number of cocaine users will be admitted to the PACU, requiring nurses to be knowledgeable about this hazardous drug. Cocaine produces harmful effects on the central nervous, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. Nursing process can be used to guide the patient's care. Changes in physical, mental, and emotional status must be assessed often. Multiple nursing diagnoses are appropriate for this patient in the PACU. Maintaining airway and alleviating pain are nursing interventions that challenge the PACU nurse. The goal of nu…

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy leverages the power of the patient's own immune system by serving as a bridge to connect genetically modified T cells to the surface antigens of tumor cells based on targeted ligands. Clinical trials have demonstrated compelling overall response and survival rates in individuals with B-cell malignancies. The current approved agents target CD19, an antigen commonly overexpressed in B-cell hematologic and other malignancies.
OBJECTIVES: This article provides information on the current state of the science related to commercially availab

This article is based on a research begun in 1990 to gain a portrait of persons in the various holistic occupations in Québec. From this research, the author came to question the motivation that pushed so many nurses to go into holistic practices. The goal of the research was not to collect specific data about nurses but to identify those individuals now working in holistic therapies. The author summarizes the theoretical framework of the first project and outlines the research methods used. Since the results identified those therapists with a nursing background, it was possible for her to rev
