Overview of modifiers of methylmercury neurotoxicity: chemicals, nutrients, and the social environment.

It has been known for decades that methylmercury is a potent neurotoxicant, and that the developing brain is more susceptible to impairment as a result of methylmercury exposure than is the adult. Exposure to methylmercury is exclusively through consumption of fish and marine mammals. In recent years, the potential for protection against methylmercury toxicity by nutrients present in fish, particularly omega-3 fatty acids and selenium, has been explored in both epidemiological and experimental studies. There is evidence from several studies that fish consumption per se and methylmercury body b…

A process to prepare a synthetic filter material containing nutrients for biofiltration.

In this study, an optimal process to prepare a synthetic filter material (poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/peat/KNO(3) composite bead) containing nutrients was developed for biofiltration. The optimal preparing condition was that each of the peat and PVA aqueous solutions contains 6.4 g KNO(3) and the nitrogen content in the boric and phosphate aqueous solutions must retain higher than 3.94 and 1.52 g N/l, respectively. The equilibrium amount of water-soluble nitrogen dissolved out of the prepared composite bead was between 7.95 and 8.21mg N/g dry solid. The path of water-soluble nitrogen dissolving …

A case of early renal functional impairment resolved with nutrients and botanicals.

The use of three herbal/nutritional products over a period of two months normalized blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, and creatinine clearance in a case of early functional kidney impairment. Although previous use of intravenous EDTA resolved Raynaud's syndrome symptoms, it provided little improvement to abnormal creatinine clearance.

Dietary intake of various nutrients in older patients with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anorexia, nausea and premature satiety with eating, prevalent in congestive heart failure (CHF), have been held responsible for reduced dietary intake and deficiency of magnesium, potassium and probably other nutrients. Since solid data is not available, this study was undertaken with the following aims (1) to assess dietary intake in CHF, (2) to compare dietary intake in older CHF patients with a similar patient population free of CHF (control group), and (3) to evaluate these data in patients with moderate versus severe CHF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Dietary intake of 57 con…

Effects of luminal nutrients and small bowel transplants on congenital indirect hyperbilirubinemia.

The Gunn rat is an excellent model of Crigler-Najjar syndrome, type 1. In previous studies we demonstrated that heterotopic 15-20-cm jejunal transplants from Wistar rats lowered serum bilirubin levels by 40%, and the reduction was transient (6 weeks). In contrast, orthotopic transplants decreased bilirubin levels by 60% and the effect persisted throughout the 8-week study. This study was initiated to identify the luminal substance(s) which are responsible for the persistent bilirubin-lowering effect of jejunal transplants. Thirty-one Wistar to Gunn 15-20-cm jejunal transplants were randomized

Hydroponic potato production on nutrients derived from anaerobically-processed potato plant residues.

Bioregenerative methods are being developed for recycling plant minerals from harvested inedible biomass as part of NASA's Advanced Life Support (ALS) research. Anaerobic processing produces secondary metabolites, a food source for yeast production, while providing a source of water soluble nutrients for plant growth. Since NH4-N is the nitrogen product, processing the effluent through a nitrification reactor was used to convert this to NO3-N, a more acceptable form for plants. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Norland plants were used to test the effects of anaerobically-produced effluent aft…

Nutrition of elderly men living alone. I. Intakes of energy and nutrients.

The energy and nutrient intakes of 35 men aged 70 years and over, living alone at home, were studied using five-day records. The mean energy intake was 1628 (SD 545) kcal/day. Protein and calcium intakes were generally adequate, but 60% of the old men took less than 10mg of iron per day. Intakes of vitamin C were below 15 mg/day in 34%. Thirty-four percent took less than 0.8 mg thiamine daily. Intakes of vitamin A and riboflavin were, in general, adequate, except for a small number of subjects. It is concluded that about one-third of the men had deficient vitamin C or thiamine intakes.

The role of nutrient stress in DNA damage.

Cells are constantly exposed to various stresses, including nutrient deprivation and genotoxic stress, which dynamically interact with cellular sensing pathways to influence metabolism, gene expression, and homeostasis. The integration of nutrient-sensing mechanisms and DNA damage response pathways is critical in cancer progression. While individual processes are well-characterized, their cross-regulatory mechanisms are just beginning to emerge. Deciphering the interplay between nutrient stress and DNA damage is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms underlying cellular responses to stress and

Nutrient Status and Intakes of Adults with Phenylketonuria.

A phenylalanine-restricted diet, supplemented with protein substitutes (PSs), remains the cornerstone of phenylketonuria (PKU) management. H … tatus of ETAwPKU was adequate, except for selenium, with higher intakes than controls for most micronutrients. Patients relied heavily on PSs to meet the recommended intakes for protein, DHA, and micronutrients. The potential clinical impact of differences found in AA status should be further studied.

Integration of Nutrient Sensing in Fish Hypothalamus.

The knowledge regarding hypothalamic integration of metabolic and endocrine signaling resulting in regulation of food intake is scarce in fish. Available studies pointed to a network in which the activation of the nutrient-sensing (glucose, fatty acid, and amino acid) systems would result in AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibition and activation of protein kinase B (Akt) and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). Changes in these signaling pathways would control phosphorylation of transcription factors cAMP response-element binding protein (CREB), forkhead box01 (FoxO1), and brain home

[Nutrient Sensing and Anorexia via Neuropeptides].

Various neuropeptides play an essential role in the nutrient sensing mechanism and related homeostasis. Nesfatin-1 is a newly identified neuropeptide having anorectic activity, and nesfatin-1-containing neurons are widely distributed in the brain, including the hypothalamus and brain stem. Our previous study showed that dehydration-induced anorectic effects are mediated via the central nesfatin-1 pathway in rats. Our recent studies have also shown that peripheral anorectic peptides (cholecystokinin-8, glucagon-like peptide-1, and leptin) and an antineoplastic agent (cisplatin) caused inhibitio

Nutrient deficiencies prior to bariatric surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to provide an update of recent additions to our understanding of the prevalence of nutrient deficiencies and the potential role of preoperative weight loss in contributing to these deficiencies in obese individuals planning to undergo bariatric surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent reports that have included bariatric surgery candidates from sites around the world have shown consistent deficiencies in a variety of nutrients. Although protein-energy malnutrition is uncommon preoperatively, micronutrient deficiencies occur commonly with multiple defic…

Appropriate nutrient supplementation in celiac disease.

Reduced levels of iron, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium are common in untreated celiac disease (CD) patients probably due to loss of brush border proteins and enzymes needed for the absorption of these nutrients. In the majority of patients, removal of gluten from the diet leads to histological recovery and normalization of iron, vitamin, and mineral levels. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common extra-intestinal sign of CD and usually resolves with adherence to a gluten-free diet. However, deficiencies of both folate and vitamin B12 may persist in some patients on a glu…

Choline: an essential nutrient for public health.

Choline was officially recognized as an essential nutrient by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1998. There is significant variation in the dietary requirement for choline that can be explained by common genetic polymorphisms. Because of its wide-ranging roles in human metabolism, from cell structure to neurotransmitter synthesis, choline-deficiency is now thought to have an impact on diseases such as liver disease, atherosclerosis, and, possibly, neurological disorders. Choline is found in a wide variety of foods. Eggs and meats are rich sources of choline in the North American diet, providi

Drug-nutrient interactions in elderly people.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The presence of multiple diseases, polypharmacy, malnutrition, and impaired metabolism in elderly individuals increases the risks of adverse events related to drug-food interactions. Some considerations for elderly people influenced by drug-food interactions are reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: When investigating pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modifications in the elderly, other factors have to be considered, such as anorexia, dementia, depression, intolerance, gastrointestinal-tract disorders, social and economic factors, reduced abilities (visual and manual) and difficulti

Complications associated with drug and nutrient interactions.

Patients receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) usually have conditions that require intravenous (IV) medications. Antibiotics, and cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and electrolyte agents are commonly prescribed for these patients. When the gastrointestinal tract is compromised, parenteral administration of these agents is often necessary. Because of the complex nature of PN and IV medications, a potential exists for serious or life-threatening drug and nutrient interactions to occur if procedures are not in place to foster their safe administration. This article will describe the physico-chemica
