The prevalence of nutritional disorders in inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The epidemiology of nutritional disorders in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains poorly characterized. Existing evidence is fragmented across specific conditions or confined to single regions, and no study has simultaneously assessed the principal nutritional disorders-malnutrition, overweight or obesity, and sarcopenia-in a unified framework. To address this gap, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and China Biology Medicine from inception to July 31, 2024 and updated on July 30, 2026. Observational studies reporting prevalence based on standard diagnostic criter

The psychological burden of nutritional treatment in inherited metabolic disorders: Navigating daily life.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases, many of which require medically prescribed nutritional treatment. Maintaining such treatment can impose a psychological burden on people with IMD and their caregivers. Previous research in our center highlighted the need for deeper insight into this burden. METHOD: This study consisted of a scoping review and semi-structured interviews. A scoping review, conducted in PubMed and PsycINFO, focused on psychological outcomes related to nutritional treatment. Semi-structured interviews were held with peop

Integrating telemedicine into nutritional management of infants with inherited metabolic disorders: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Several inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) require intensive and continuous nutritional management, particularly during the first year of life. Telemedicine (TM) may support care delivery in this setting, but evidence in infants remains limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of integrating TM into routine nutritional management of infants with IMDs identified through newborn screening. METHODS: Caregivers of infants with IMDs requiring nutritional management were asked to choose between telemedicine-integrated follow-up (

Validity of nutrition-related outcome measures in eating disorder treatment: a scoping review.

This scoping review aimed to identify nutrition-related outcome measures used in experimental eating disorder studies and synthesise evidence on their validity. Five databases were searched for experimental studies reporting nutrition-related outcome measures in eating disorder treatment, published between January 1990 and February 2025. Data on outcome measures, their context and validity were extracted and synthesised according to alignment with the Nutrition Care Process, a framework used by dietitians. A supplementary search identified additional evidence on the validity of each measure. S

Nutritional deficiencies in oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates nutritional deficiencies as potential markers in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), including oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF). OSMF, linked to betel nut product use, has been rising in India. This study focuses on assessing iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies in OSMF and OSCC patients as indicators of disease progression and potential markers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants from different groups were recruited and examined. Vitamin B12 and folate levels were measured using en

Role of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis in Detecting Nutritional Disorders in Institutionalized Psychogeriatric Patients.

Background: Institutionalized older adults often experience cognitive and functional decline and altered body composition (BC), making nutritional assessment difficult. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) offers a simple and non-invasive method to evaluate BC; classic and specific bioelectrical impedance vector analysis do not require predictive models or assumptions about hydration status. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the utility of BIA, classic bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), and specific BIVA (BIVA-Sp) in detecting nutritional and other related disorders in ins

Silicon attenuates nutritional disorder of phosphorus in seedlings of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional disorders of phosphorus (P), due to deficiency or toxicity, reduce the development of Eucalyptus spp. seedlings. Phosphorus deficiency often results in stunted growth and reduced vigor, while phosphorus toxicity can lead to nutrient imbalances and decreased physiological function. These sensitivities highlight the need for precise management of P levels in cultivation practices. The use of the beneficial element silicon (Si) has shown promising results under nutritional stress; nevertheless, comprehensive studies on its effects on Eucalyptus spp. seedlings are still eme

[Consensus document about the nutritional evaluation and management of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa].

Anorexia nervosa is the most common psychiatric disease among young women and it is assumed to be of multifactorial origin. Diagnostic criteria have recently been modified; therefore amenorrhea has ceased to be a part of them. This disease shows a large variability in its presentation and severity which conditions different therapeutic approaches and the need to individualize the treatment, thus it is indispensable a multidisciplinary approach. The goals are to restore nutritional status (through an individualized diet plan based on a healthy consumption pattern), treat complications and comor

Nutritional status of individuals with autism spectrum disorders: do we know enough?

The incidence of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is on the rise; therefore, well-timed screening is important. Given that this is a nutritionally vulnerable population, it is imperative to conduct a detailed nutritional assessment so that timely and intensive interventions can be recommended. This review article summarizes the research, focusing on the nutritional status of individuals with ASDs based on their anthropometric measurements, biomarkers, and dietary assessments. Research examining anthropometric measurements reveals an abnormally accelerated rate of growth among

Maternal nutritional status as a contributing factor for the risk of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Compare nutritional status of 57 South African mothers of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) with 148 mothers of controls. METHODS: Dietary data were analyzed for macronutrients, micronutrients, and fats via estimated average requirements (EAR) and adequate intakes (AI) for pregnant women. RESULTS: Virtually all mothers were likely deficient on most micronutrients by either EAR (<50%) or AI values. Mothers of FASD children consumed more of 13 of 25 micronutrients. For percentage below EAR, only vitamin D was significantly higher for FASD mothers. Despite no diff

Sex-related effects of nutritional supplementation of Escherichia coli: relevance to eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The biological background of sex-related differences in the development of eating disorders (EDs) is unknown. Recent data showed that gut bacteria Escherichia coli induce autoantibodies against anorexigenic α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) associated with psychopathology in ED. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of E. coli on feeding and autoantibodies against α-MSH and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), between female and male rats. METHODS: Commensal E. coli K12 were given in a culture medium daily to adult Wistar rats by intragastric gavage over a 3-wk pe

New insights in nutritional management and amino acid supplementation in urea cycle disorders.

Sodium phenylbutyrate is used in the pharmacological treatment of urea cycle disorders to create alternative pathways for nitrogen excretion. The primary metabolite, phenylacetate, conjugates glutamine in the liver and kidney to form phenylacetylglutamine that is readily excreted in the urine. Patients with urea cycle disorders taking sodium phenylbutyrate have a selective reduction in the plasma concentrations of branched chain amino acids despite adequate dietary protein intake. Moreover, this depletion is usually the harbinger of a metabolic crisis. Plasma branched chain amino acids and oth

Manic depressive psychosis and schizophrenia are neurological disorders at the extremes of CNS maturation and nutritional disorders associated with a deficit in marine fat.

The maturational theory of brain development comprises manic depressive psychosis and schizophrenia. It holds that the disorders are part of human diversity in growth and maturation, which explains their ubiquity, shared susceptibility genes and multifactorial inheritance. Rate of maturation and age at puberty are the genotype; the disorders are localized at the extremes with normality in between. This is based on the association between onset of puberty and the final regressive event, with pruning of 40% of excitatory synapses leaving the inhibitory ones fairly unchanged. This makes excitabil
