Assessment of Packaged Foods and Beverages Carrying Nutrition Marketing against Canada's Food Guide Recommendations.

Canadians' food purchases consist largely of packaged processed and ultra-processed products, which typically fall outside the "core" foods recommended by Canada's Food Guide (CFG). Almost half of packaged products in Canada carry nutrition marketing (i.e., nutrient content and health claims). This study assessed whether packaged foods carrying nutrition marketing align with recommendations outlined in the 2007 CFG. Label data (n = 9376) were extracted from the 2013 Food Label Information Program (FLIP). Label components (including nutrition marketing) were classified using the International N

RECENT FINDINGS: This population is at-risk for experiencing food and nutrition insecurity due to high rates of unemployment, parental history of incarceration, housing instability, depressive symptoms, and social isolation, which result from involvement with the corrections system. Health consequence

Food for Thought: Addressing a Research Gap for Dietary Trials in Hematologic Malignancies.

There is growing interest from both patients and clinicians in understanding the role nutrition plays across hematologic malignancies. In this study, we highlight key unanswered questions related to studying dietary interventions in hematologic malignancies, including questions about how to conduct research, trial design considerations, and integrating dietary interventions into hematologic cancer care and policy.

The double burden of malnutrition: rethinking clinical and policy responses in the era of rising obesity in low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the growing challenge of the double burden of malnutrition (DBM), the co-existence of undernutrition and obesity, and the associated clinical and policy complexities in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). DESIGN: This commentary synthesises evidence from recent multi-country and country-specific studies in sub-Saharan Africa and other LMIC. Many LMIC are typified by food insecurity, socio-economic inequalities and fragile health systems which drive DBM patterns, as well as informal community structures such as rotating savings groups which influence access to health

Advocacy for Improving Nutrition in the First 1000 Days to Support Childhood Development and Adult Health.

Maternal prenatal nutrition and the child's nutrition in the first 2 years of life (1000 days) are crucial factors in a child's neurodevelopment and lifelong mental health. Child and adult health risks, including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, may be programmed by nutritional status during this period. Calories are essential for growth of both fetus and child but are not sufficient for normal brain development. Although all nutrients are necessary for brain growth, key nutrients that support neurodevelopment include protein; zinc; iron; choline; folate; iodine; vitamins A, D, B6, and B12

Global Perspectives on China's Iodine Dietary Reference Intakes: Revisions, Public Health Implications, and Future Strategies.

Iodine is an essential trace element for the human body and a fundamental precursor for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, playing a critical role in maintaining thyroid function. Since iodine cannot be synthesized by the body, it must be obtained from external sources. The development of dietary reference intakes for iodine has evolved over time, with various countries establishing guidelines based on local dietary surveys, iodine status assessments, and health outcomes. The dietary reference intakes of iodine vary widely across different regions due to differences in dietary habits, food for

Exploring the Social Determinants of Health in Nutrition Care for South Asian Communities: A Narrative Review.

The South Asian (SA) diasporic communities in Canada experience a greater burden of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to white populations. Nutrition interventions often focus on individual behaviours and fail to consider that the social determinants of health (SDH) have a greater impact on chronic disease risk. A narrative review was conducted to identify the SDH in nutrition care interventions for the SA diaspora in Canada. The final analysis included fourteen articles from which SDH were identified and categorized based on the Social Ecological Model (SEM). The study analys

Systematic review on daily vitamin B12 losses and bioavailability for deriving recommendations on vitamin B12 intake with the factorial approach.

AIMS: To systematically review the literature on daily losses and bioavailability of vitamin B12. These estimates could be used for deriving recommendations on vitamin B12 intake for adults and elderly. METHODS: We identified publications on daily vitamin B12 losses (July 2011) and publications on the bioavailability of vitamin B12 from foods or diets (June 2010) in MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library. RESULTS: A pooled analysis of five studies (52 subjects) showed that 0.13 ± 0.03% of the total body store is lost per day. Absorption of vitamin B12 ranged from 4.5 (dose of 38 µg from co

Expert meeting on Child Growth and Micronutrient Deficiencies--New Initiatives for Developing Countries to Achieve Millennium Development Goals: executive summary report.

Undernutrition in early childhood has long-term physical and intellectual consequences. Improving child growth should start before the age of two years and be an integrated effort between all sectors, covering all aspects such as diet and nutrient intake, disease reduction, optimum child care, and improved environmental sanitation. To discuss these issues, the Indonesian Danone Institute Foundation organized an expert meeting on Child Growth and Micronutrient Deficiencies: New Initiatives for Developing Countries to Achieve Millennium Development Goals. The objective of the meeting was to have

Risk analysis applied to food fortification.

OBJECTIVE: To describe how a risk analysis can be applied to food fortification, with emphasis on voluntary fortification and intake levels that might exceed usual dietary levels. DESIGN: Use of the risk analysis model as a frame to classify nutrients according to the risk of exceeding upper safe intake levels. Furthermore, to apply the model when discussing possible consequences of liberal fortification practices on eating behaviour and disease patterns. SETTING: The discussion on food fortification presently going on internationally. RESULTS: Micronutrients can be classified according to

Potential interventions targeting adolescent nutrition in Indonesia: a literature review.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to take stock of nutrition interventions that warrant consideration as a minimum package of interventions in Indonesia to improve four key nutrition indicators for adolescents: stunting, thinness, overweight and anaemia. DESIGN: We conducted a review of the peer-reviewed literature published between 1995 and 2017 on nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions that target adolescents in Indonesia. The search to identify studies was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar and EMBASE, using key search terms. We also explored programmatic and policy doc
