Body lice and bed bugs are hematophagous insects that parasitize humans. Body lice are established vectors of several bacterial pathogens (e.g. Bartonella quintana, Borrelia recurrentis). Bed bugs are biologically competent vectors of some of the same agents, but their vectorial capacity for these in nature is unclear. In particular, a lack of exposure to louse-borne pathogens in bed bugs in the field could be a factor that limits their contribution to transmission. The objective of this study was to estimate the relative risk of postpartum complication by type of delivery among Ohio Medicaid beneficiaries. In 1975, during the largest epidemic of St Louis encephalitis (SLE) in the United States, 416 cases were diagnosed in Ohio. Persons who were admitted to two Columbus (Ohio) hospitals with suspected acute viral CNS infection were prospectively studied to define the virologic and clinical aspects of SLE. CONTEXT: Ohio is the only state that requires local health departments (LHDs) to be accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). As of May 2024, 80% of Ohio's 111 LHDs achieved accreditation, making Ohio the state with the highest proportion of accredited LHDs in the country.
