Working memory and decision-making biases in young adults with a family history of alcoholism: studies from the Oklahoma family health patterns project.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse is more common in persons with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) than in those with no such history (FH-). Among FH+, behavioral disinhibition and male sex seem to signal the presence of an increased risk. METHODS: This study examined cognitive and behavioral characteristics of 175 nonabusing 18- to 30-year-olds, 87 FH+ and 88 FH-, who were further characterized by their degree of behavioral disinhibition using the Sociability scale of the California Personality Inventory. Working memory and decision making were tested using the Stroop Color-Word Test and the Iow

Associations Among Minority Stress, Relaxation and Tension-Reduction Motives, and Cannabis Use Among a Sample of Sexual and Gender Minority Adults in Oklahoma.

INTRODUCTION: Despite well-documented cannabis use disparities among sexual and gender minority (SGM; vs heterosexual and/or cisgender) adults, less is known regarding associations of minority stressors, cannabis use motives, and cannabis use outcomes among SGM individuals. METHODS: Data were from a repeated online cross-sectional survey of SGM-identifying adults in Oklahoma (n = 430; 67% female). Multivariable regressions examined associations of: (1) minority stressors (ie, discrimination, internalized stigma, community acceptance/safety, time spent in SGM spaces) with relaxation/tension-re…

Comparison of the vector potential of different mosquito species for the transmission of heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, in rural and urban areas in and surrounding Stillwater, Oklahoma, U.S.A.

Dirofilaria immitis Leidy (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), or heartworm, is a mosquito-borne nematode that causes a fatal disease in carnivores. … uitoes were collected from May to November 2010 at 16 rural and 16 urban locations in Payne County, Oklahoma, U.S.A. using three trapping methods that utilized, respectively, resting boxes, carbon dioxide traps and BG Sentinel traps. Urban areas showed greater numbers of Ae. albopictus and a higher overall likelihood of infection with D. immitis. Because m …

A NEW SPECIES OF THELOHANELLUS (CNIDARIA: MYXOSPOREA: MYXOBOLIDAE) FROM THE GILL OF QUILLBACK, CARPIODES CYPRINUS (CYPRINIFORMES: CATOSTOMIDAE), FROM THE ARKANSAS RIVER DRAINAGE OF OKLAHOMA.

During May 2022 and again in March 2023, 5 quillbacks, Carpiodes cyprinus, were collected from the Verdigris River, Wagoner County, Oklahoma (n = 1), and the Black River, Lawrence County, Arkansas (n = 4), and their gill, gallbladder, fins, integument, musculature, and other major organs were macroscopically examined for myxozoans. Gill lamellae from the single quillback from the Verdigris River was infected with a new myxozoan, Thelohanellus oklahomaensis n. sp. Qualitative and quantitative morphological data were obtained from fresh and formalin-fixed preserved myxospores, and molecular data…

Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Post-Larval Pre-Tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides sp. (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) from Ground Skink, Scincella lateralis (SAURIA: SCINCIDAE), FROM SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA.

Free pre-tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides sp. are described, for the first time, from samples obtained from the coelomic cavity of a ground skink, Scincella lateralis, from Oklahoma. Closer examination of these early-stage tapeworms revealed they were transitional metamorphosis stages between a post-hexacanth procercoid form to the full metacestode of Mesocestoides. A series of transitional stages was found that span the full period of sucker and apical organ development. However, we did not see any fully developed tetrathyridia, i.e., having classic Mesocestoides morphology but with the apical …

A biopsychosocial path model linking tobacco smoking to the Native American chronic pain disparity: findings from the Oklahoma Study of Native American Pain Risk.

BACKGROUND: Among US groups, Native Americans (NAs) have the highest rates of smoking and chronic pain. No study has examined whether smoking contributes to NA chronic pain disparities. PURPOSE: We tested a biopsychosocial model linking smoking with chronic pain among NAs. METHODS: Social, psychological, and biological variables associated with chronic pain risk and smoking were assessed in healthy, pain-free NAs and non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs). Participants were followed for 5 years to assess who did (N = 49) and did not (N = 151) develop chronic pain (pain rated ≥3/10 on most days lasting ≥

Greater discounting of delayed rewards in young adults with family histories of alcohol and drug use disorders: studies from the Oklahoma family health patterns project.

BACKGROUND: Increased discounting of delayed rewards may be a premorbid characteristic and possible risk factor for alcohol and other drug use disorders; however, previous studies have found no or minimal differences in delay discounting in individuals at risk for substance use disorders based on family history. It is possible that increased delay discounting may be more closely associated with antisocial traits, evident in a subset of individuals with positive family histories of alcohol and drug use disorders, and that previous studies were underpowered for detecting subtle to modest overall

Occurrence of Major Grapevine Viruses in Oklahoma and Genetic Diversity Assessment of Field Isolates of Grapevine Leafroll-Associated Virus 3 and Grapevine Red Blotch Virus.

Oklahoma grapevine production interests are on the rise, but very little is known about the occurrence of major grapevine-infecting viruses in the state. To address this knowledge gap, a total of 85 grapevine samples were collected from eight vineyards across six counties in Oklahoma during the spring and fall of 2024. Total RNA extracts from each sample were assayed for 14 major viruses by RT-PCR, including grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1 (GLRaV-1), GLRaV-2, GLRaV-3, GLRaV-4, grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV), tobacco ringspot virus, tomato ringspot virus…

Negative Focused Abdominal Sonography for Trauma examination predicts successful nonoperative management in pediatric solid organ injury: A prospective Arizona-Texas-Oklahoma-Memphis-Arkansas + Consortium study.

BACKGROUND: Focused Abdominal Sonography for Trauma (FAST) examination has long been proven useful in the management of adult trauma patients, however, its utility in pediatric trauma patients is not as proven. Our goal was to evaluate the utility of a FAST examination in predicting the success or failure of nonoperative management (NOM) of blunt liver and/or spleen (BLSI) in the pediatric trauma population. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a prospective observational study of patients younger than 18 years presenting with BLSI to one of ten Level I pediatric trauma centers between April

A small caseid synapsid, Arisierpeton simplex gen. et sp. nov., from the early Permian of Oklahoma, with a discussion of synapsid diversity at the classic Richards Spur locality.

Our recent study demonstrated that immunizations with nonreplicable MC38 colorectal cancer cells plus a novel recombinant protein adjuvant, the amino-terminus region of dense granule protein 6 (rGRA6Nt) of Toxoplasma gondii (a protozoan parasite), effectively activate the cancer cell-specific CD8+ T cytotoxic cells and inhibit the growth of implanted tumors of the identical cancer cells after its challenge implantation. In the present study, we first examined whether rGRA6Nt activates mRNA expression for IFN-γ, IL-12, IL-15, and IL-18, which are known to assist an activation of the CD8+ T cell

Using a Community-Embedded Screening and Navigation Framework to Engage High-Risk Men in Prostate Cancer Early Detection: Five Years of the Men's Health Awareness Summit in Oklahoma.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. Black men experience the highest incidence and mortality and are more likely to be diagnosed at younger ages and with more advanced or aggressive disease. Because survival outcomes differ substantially by stage at diagnosis, community-based approaches that support early detection are needed. This paper describes the development and five-year evolution of the Men's Health Awareness Summit (MHAS), a community-led initiative in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, launched during…

Differential activation of the anterior cingulate cortex and caudate nucleus during a gambling simulation in persons with a family history of alcoholism: studies from the Oklahoma Family Health Patterns Project.

Individuals with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) are at enhanced risk of developing an alcohol or other substance use disorder relative to those without this history (FH-). Recent studies comparing FH+ and FH- individuals have revealed differences in cognition, emotion processing, sociability, and decision-making. These differences suggest possible altered brain functioning in FH+ individuals that may play a crucial role in vulnerability to substance use disorders. In the present study, 15 FH+ and 19 FH- individuals performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a simulated card game requiring i

Sleep Problems Mediate the Relationship Between Psychosocial Stress and Pain Facilitation in Native Americans: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis from the Oklahoma Study of Native American Pain Risk.

BACKGROUND: Native Americans (NAs) are more likely to experience chronic pain than non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs); however, the proximate causes predisposing NAs to chronic pain remain elusive. Likely due to centuries of adversity, discrimination, and marginalization, NAs report greater psychological stress than NHWs, which may place them at risk for sleep problems, a well-established risk factor for chronic pain onset. PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of psychological stress and sleep problems on subjective and physiological measures of pain processing in NAs and NHWs. METHODS: Structur

"It Took Me on a Journey Other Than Just to Stop Smoking": Pilot Trial Outcomes of an Empowerment Theory-Based Smoking Cessation Intervention for Sexual and/or Gender Minoritized People in Oklahoma.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and/or gender-minoritized (SGM) people are more likely to smoke if they live where SGM stigma is high, and existing SGM-tailored cessation interventions do not address the unique challenges of these environments. This paper reports outcomes from a single-arm pilot trial of an Empowerment Theory (ET)-based smoking cessation intervention for SGM people living in high-stigma environments. METHODS: SGM adults willing to quit smoking (N = 20; Oklahoma) participated in a 12-week intervention comprised of online SGM-serving volunteer activity sessions concurrent with remotely de…
