Substance P has been proposed as a candidate neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the nociceptive system. Using a light microscopial immunohistochemical peroxidase-anti-peroxidase technique we have detected high substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in several types of sensory organs of 4 species of gymnotiform teleost fish: olfactory epithelium, vestibular, lateral line and electrosensory organs. The olfactory nerve and its endings within the olfactory bulb and the telencephalon were also strongly labelled. At these sites no SPLI was revealed in other teleosts (Carassius auratus, Gnathone

The olfactory system is an essential part of human physiology, with a rich evolutionary history. Although humans are less dependent on chemosensory input than are other mammals (Niimura 2009, Hum. Genomics 4:107-118), olfactory function still plays a critical role in health and behavior. The detection of hazards in the environment, generating feelings of pleasure, promoting adequate nutrition, influencing sexuality, and maintenance of mood are described roles of the olfactory system, while other novel functions are being elucidated. A growing body of evidence has implicated a role for olfactio

After surgical section of the vomeronasal nerves the neurosensory cells in the vomeronasal epithelium die. Electron microscopy has been used to demonstrate that their axons, and synaptic terminals in the accessory olfactory bulb degenerate and are removed by phagocytic astroglia. The vacated postsynaptic sites in the accessory bulb persist, and are not re-innervated, either by vomeronasal or olfactory axons, as long as 150 days post-operatively. However, new neurosensory cells which are produced in the vomeronasal epithelium after vomeronasal nerve section do form axons. Light and electron mic

Coincident with the sectioning of the primary olfactory nerves in mice there is a dramatic loss of both olfactory-mediated behavior and the ability of the primary olfactory neurons to synthesize and transport the neuron specific marker, carnosine. These deficiencies are only temporary, and the ability of food deprived mice to locate buried food pellets returns within 21 days after olfactory nerve section. The ability of the primary olfactory neurons to synthesize and transport carnosine appears to increase between 8 days and 45 days after surgery. These data support the notion of behaviorally

A modified method of applying ZnSO4 to the olfactory mucosa is described. Treated rats experienced severe nasal congestion that cleared within 24 h; more persistent morbidity did not occur. Nonpregnant females observed with male intruders 24 h following ZnSO4 showed no alterations in behavior other than a reduction in anogenital sniffing, indicating that they were not hypoactive or irritable. In other experiments, lactating females were observed in a hole-board apparatus; 2 days posttreatment anosmia was confirmed in 80% of bilaterally ZnSO4-treated females by the absence of preference for pup

Using a monoclonal antibody against the B-chain of platelet-derived growth factor as a marker, we have examined the behavior of olfactory ensheathing glia in the normal and transplanted rat olfactory bulb. In the normal postnatal olfactory bulb, these glia are found to ensheath the bundles of incoming primary olfactory nerve fibers as well as those in the olfactory nerve layer. Olfactory marker protein antibody was used to identify the olfactory nerve proper. Within the transplant, the same glia: (1) ensheath bundles of both primary olfactory and non-primary olfactory axons, (2) ensheath axona

Postmortem examination of a 65-year-old anosmic woman revealed rudimentary olfactory bulbs, an imperforate cribriform plate, and sulcal abnormalities of the orbitofrontal surface of the brain. The remainder of the brain, skull, and body was normal. This abnormality most likely resulted from a local insult to the area of the cribriform plate during early fetal life, occurring after the induction of olfactory bulb differentiation, but before migration and complete differentiation of the olfactory bulbs. Such a lesion can be dated to approximately 11 to 12 weeks gestational age. The malformation

The ganglion cells of the terminal nerve (TN cells) in the carp were identified using intracellular recording and staining techniques. The TN cells showed characteristic location and morphology as well as characteristic responses after electrical shocks to the olfactory nerve and tracts. These features of the TN cells were distinct from those of the mitral or other cells in the olfactory bulb.

The electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve allows to record steady field potentials in the olfactory bulb of the trout Salmo gairdneri. 200 microns separate recording points which are localised on a tridimensional network. At 18, 24, 30 and 38 ms the amplitudes are measured and plotted in a calculator which determines the isopotentials in any vertical, horizontal and sagittal planes. With this method, we have an instantaneous and global vision of bulbar activity and we observe striking anatomo-functional correlations in the olfactory bulb of Salmo gairdneri.

In a lot of 3 patients with olfactory meningioma, one patient drew particular attention by the particularities of its evolution, which was asymptomatic for a long time and atypical. The disease started at the age of 38 with asthenia, headaches, dizziness and X-ray images of left parasellar calcified brain tumour, without neurological signs of a focus at any of the repeated clinical or paraclinical examinations. After eight years focal signs appears: left pyramidal irritation, absences, left hyposmia, without altered visual acuity or conclusive scintigraphic and EEG alterations. Left carotid ar

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was performed on 9 patients who lacked a sense of smell since birth. Seven of them, including two patients with Kallmann syndrome, exhibited abnormality of the olfactory bulb, olfactory tract, olfactory sulcus, or rectus gyrus, with some variation among patients in type and degree of abnormality. The other two patients exhibited normal olfactory pathway morphology, and for them the possibility of acquired sensorineural anosmia could not be ruled out. MRI is useful for determining whether patients with congenital anosmia have olfactory pathway anomalies. Many pa

Research studies that focus on understanding the onset of neurodegenerative pathology and therapeutic interventions to inhibit its causative factors, have shown a crucial role of olfactory bulb neurons as they transmit and propagate nerve impulses to higher cortical and limbic structures. In rodent models, removal of the olfactory bulb results in pathology of the frontal cortex that shows striking similarity with frontal cortex features of patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative disorders. Widely different approaches involving behavioral symptom analysis, histopathological and molecular alte

Pattern completion, or the ability to retrieve stable neural activity patterns from noisy or partial cues, is a fundamental feature of memory. Theoretical studies indicate that recurrently connected auto-associative or discrete attractor networks can perform this process. Although pattern completion and attractor dynamics have been observed in various recurrent neural circuits, the role recurrent circuitry plays in implementing these processes remains unclear. In recordings from head-fixed mice, we found that odor responses in olfactory bulb degrade under ketamine/xylazine anesthesia while res

Chemical communication is widely used among various organisms to obtain essential information from their environment required for life. Although a large variety of molecules have been shown to act as chemical cues, the molecular and neural basis underlying the behaviors elicited by these molecules has been revealed for only a limited number of molecules. Here, we review the current knowledge regarding the signaling molecules whose flow from receptor to specific behavior has been characterized. Discussing the molecules utilized by mice, insects, and the worm, we focus on how each organism has o

INTRODUCTION: Hypoplasia of the olfactory tracts and bulbs is a rare cause of anosmia in the paediatric population. In most cases it is usually due to an acquired cause and in only a few is it associated to chromosomal disorders (Kallman's syndrome, among others).
CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old boy with no chromosomal disorders and a family history of anosmia, who visited because of isolated anosmia; a magnetic resonance scan revealed bilateral hypoplasia of the olfactory tracts and bulbs.
CONCLUSIONS: Magnetic resonance imaging allows the anatomy of the olfactory tract to be studied in detail a

The olfactory system discriminates a large number of odorants using precisely wired neural circuits. It offers an excellent opportunity to study mechanisms of neuronal wiring specificity at the single synapse level. Each olfactory receptor neuron typically expresses only one olfactory receptor from many receptor genes (1000 in mice). In mice, this striking singularity appears to be ensured by a negative feedback mechanism. Olfactory receptor neurons expressing the same receptor converge their axons to stereotypical positions with high precision, a feature that is conserved from insects to mamm

The definition of the terminal nerve has led to considerable confusion and controversy. This review analyzes the current state of knowledge as well as diverging opinions about the existence, components, and definition of terminal nerves or their components, with emphasis on lampreys and lungfishes. I will argue that the historical terminology regarding this cranial nerve embraces a definition of a terminal nerve that is compatible with its existence in all vertebrate species. This review further summarizes classical and more recent anatomical, developmental, neurochemical, and molecular eviden

AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM: Occupational exposure to chemical products can have toxic effects on the olfactory system. An important number of patients have experienced olfactory disorders subsequent to the development of the chemical industry and atmospheric pollution. EPIDEMIOLOGY DATA: Straightforward data are difficult to collect because several cofactors other than the toxic product are involved. Two lists of toxic products can be made. The first list includes products for which scientific data is available and the second products for which data is lacking. Olfactory tests also differ between au
