The role of maternal child maltreatment history and unsupportive emotion socialization in the intergenerational transmission of emotion regulation difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health problems and poor parenting are thought to account for the intergenerational transmission of poor outcomes to offspring of mothers who have experienced child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: Given that emotion regulation (ER) difficulties have been linked to adult psychopathology and maladaptive parenting, the goal of the present study was to examine the mechanisms through which a maternal history of child maltreatment, and subsequent difficulties with ER, might contribute to unsupportive emotion socialization and the intergenerational transmission of ER difficultie

Vaccine message framing and parents' intent to immunize their infants for MMR.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Emphasizing societal benefits of vaccines has been linked to increased vaccination intentions in adults. It is unclear if this pattern holds for parents deciding whether to vaccinate their children. The objective was to determine whether emphasizing the benefits of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination directly to the vaccine recipient or to society differentially impacts parents' vaccine intentions for their infants. METHODS: In a national online survey, parents (N = 802) of infants <12 months old were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 4 MMR vaccine messages: (1)

Quality of life of children with achondroplasia and their parents - a German cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia is the most common form of disproportionate short stature and might affect not only the quality of life of the affected child but also that of the parents. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the quality of life of children with achondroplasia from child- and parent perspective as well as the parental quality of life. METHODS: Forty-seven children with achondroplasia and 73 parents from a German patient organization participated. We assessed children's quality of life using the generic Peds QL 4.0™ as self-reports for children aged 8-14 and parent-reports for child

Group therapy with sexually molested children.

It should be stressed that the young children's group was only a part of the overall treatment approach that forms the family context of the Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program. Because the therapists also work with entire families, they have come to accept that the child is not the only victim. Often the mothers and fathers in this program were themselves victims of sexual assaults when they were children, and have carried this victim roles with them into adulthood. A child growing up in this family system will learn the victim role well. Her denial and/or fear of sexual aggression, as well

The role of maltreatment risk in the interplay between maternal and child's empathy over time.

Parental empathy is associated with risk of child maltreatment which is, in turn, associated with children's negative social outcomes. Yet familial relationships are not unidirectional. We aimed to examine the interplay between maternal and child empathy over two time points, two years apart, and how these are moderated by abuse risk. Participants were N = 250 mothers of children aged 4-10 years (48.4% girls). Bivariate change score models were computed to examine the relationship between changes in maternal and child's empathy. Maternal empathic concern predicted an increase in her child's co

The handicapped child and child abuse.

For a group of children with handicaps, growth and development are also affected by abuse or neglect. Our understanding of the problems of the abused, handicapped child emerges from experience with 37 children with cerebral palsy who have been maltreated, coupled with a review of the literature in related areas. We identify the following four problems as crucial to the study of abuse and neglect to the child with handicaps: (1) abuse that causes handicaps, (2) abuse that occurs to the handicapped child, (3) compromises in care that can occur when the handicapped child becomes involved with the

Challenging the Sensitive Window Hypothesis: Timing Effects of Maternal Depressive Symptoms on the Intergenerational Transmission of Maltreatment and Psychopathology in the Next Generation.

OBJECTIVE: The current study explored the role of maternal depressive symptoms in the intergenerational transmission of childhood maltreatment and developmental psychopathology. Based on the sensitive window hypothesis, the effects of earlier versus later maternal depression symptoms on child development were analysed. METHOD: Ninety-nine mother-child dyads, 65% of which had high-risk teenage mothers, participated in a longitudinal study with three assessments in the first 18 months of the child's life (T1-T3) and a 4th reassessment (T4) at the child's preschool age. Using serial mediation an

The Effects of Intimate Partner Violence on Children: Navigating Therapeutic Assessment and Intervention.

Over 5 million American children are estimated to be exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) annually. The past decade has seen a surge in research, assessment, and related interventions regarding children and violence. Contemporary practice guidelines continue to expand relative to the wide range of violence that a child might be exposed to, particularly noting that children who have experienced one type of violence, such as physical abuse, are at great risk for also experiencing other forms of violence. Effects on children exposed to IPV are potentially catastrophic and can be influenced,

Difficulty of caring for children in danger or at risk of danger in Var (a French department) by general practitioners and private pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: The exposure of children to situations of danger or risk of danger is a major public health problem. General practitioners (GPs) and pediatricians play an essential role in identification and management of these situations thanks to two procedures: the administrative procedure consists of sending an information of concern ("Information préoccupante" -IP- in French) to the departmental unit of collection, evaluation and processing of information of concern (CRIP in French) for a child at risk of danger; the judicial procedure consists of sending an alert ("signalement" in French) to

Child Abuse Management Units: How can Mental Health Services be Further Improved?

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a broad term that includes physical, sexual, and emotional (e.g., psychological, verbal) abuse. There are huge variations with regard to the level of severity and the consequences of abuse. Because child abuse is such a sensitive topic, it is a challenging task to conduct studies concerning this subject. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify areas that could be improved to offer better health care services to patients. Therefore, routine assessments, the characteristics of the cases, and the types of follow up were emphasized. METHOD: The Norwegian Minist

An effect of gene dosage on production of human chorionic somatomammotropin.

The gene deletions responsible for isolated partial deficiency of fetal human chorionic somatomammotropin (hCS) production were characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis of genomic DNA prepared from the leukocytes of an affected child. The phenotypically normal child was the product of a 38-week pregnancy characterized by peak maternal hCS levels of 1.1 micrograms/microliter (normal, 3-9.2 micrograms/ml) and normal levels of other pregnancy-associated hormones. Two genes, termed hCS-A and hCS-B, specify the same mature hCS peptide and are responsible for fetal hCS production. Digestio

Child maltreatment among U.S. Air Force parents deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom.

This study examined child maltreatment perpetration among 99,697 active-duty U.S. Air Force parents who completed a combat deployment. Using the deploying parent as the unit of analysis, we analyzed whether child maltreatment rates increased postdeployement relative to predeployment. These analyses extend previous research that used aggregate data and extend our previous work that used data from the same period but used the victim as the unit of analysis and included only deploying parents who engaged in child maltreatment. In this study, 2% (n = 1,746) of deploying parents perpetrated child m

Risk factors for active trachoma in The Gambia.

Trachoma has been endemic in The Gambia for decades but national surveys indicate that the prevalence is falling. Risk factor data can help guide trachoma control efforts. This study investigated risk factors for active trachoma and ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infection in children aged below 10 years in two Gambian regions. The overall prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was only 0.3% (3/950) compared with 10.4% (311/2990) for active trachoma, therefore analyses were only performed for active trachoma. After adjustment, increased risk of trachoma was associated with being aged 1-2 years (

Exasperating or exceptional? Parents' interpretations of their child's ADHD behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a commonly diagnosed childhood disorder associated with parent-child conflict and parental stress. This investigation explored whether parents' interpretation of symptomatic behavior predicted negative interactions with and perceptions of their child. METHOD: We recruited parents of 7-12 year old children who were diagnosed with ADHD (n = 41), were diagnosed with ADHD but whose parents construed symptomatic behavior positively (Indigo children; n = 36), and had no diagnosis (n = 26). Parents completed a questionnaire about their ex

The association of allergic sensitization in mother and child in breast-fed and formula-fed infants.

Human milk contains immunologically active substances potentially capable of altering infant immune response. As part of the prospective Children's Respiratory Study, we assessed whether the association between maternal allergic status and allergic status of the child was altered by breast-feeding. Skin-prick tests for 7 common allergens were administered to 702 6-year-old children and their mothers. The percentage of children sensitized to specific allergens, maternal skin test response to that allergen, and whether or not the child was ever breast-fed was determined. Findings indicated that
