High-performance racetrack resonator in silicon nitride - thin film lithium niobate hybrid platform.

In this paper, we propose an electro-optic modulator design in a hybrid Si3N4-X-cut LiNbO3. The modulator is based on a modified racetrack resonator and performs at both DC and heightened frequencies. Here the driving electrodes are defined along the straight section of the racetrack. This is done to maximize modulation and minimize modulation-cancelation that occurs in a conventional X-cut LiNbO3-based resonator due to the directional change of the electric field in the micro-ring. The single bus racetrack resonator is formed in a hybrid Si3N4-LiNbO3 platform, to guide the optical mode. The f

Optical analysis of CH3NH3Sn x Pb1-x I3 absorbers: a roadmap for perovskite-on-perovskite tandem solar cells.

Organic-inorganic perovskite structures in which lead is substituted by tin are exceptional candidates for broadband light absorption. Herein we present a thorough analysis of the optical properties of CH3NH3Sn x Pb1-x I3 films, providing the field with definitive insights about the possibilities of these materials for perovskite solar cells of superior efficiency. We report a user's guide based on the first set of optical constants obtained for a series of tin/lead perovskite films, which was only possible to measure due to the preparation of optical quality thin layers. According to the Shoc

Temperature sensor based on a hybrid ITO-silica resonant cavity.

Integrated optical devices comprised of multiple material systems are able to achieve unique performance characteristics, enabling applications in sensing and in telecommunications. Due to ease of fabrication, the majority of previous work has focused on polymer-dielectric or polymer-semiconductor systems. However, the environmental stability of polymers is limited. In the present work, a hybrid device comprised of an indium tin oxide (ITO) coating on a silicon dioxide toroidal resonant cavity is fabricated. Finite element method simulations of the optical field in the multi-material device ar…

Aqueous infiltration into an implantable miniaturized telescope.

The implantable miniaturized telescope (IMT) is the first intraocular magnifying system proposed for optical correction in patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). The optical component is embedded in a carrying device designed as an intraocular lens that is implanted after cataract surgery. In this study, we report findings on an IMT that was explanted because of aqueous infiltration into its optic and describe the configuration of this device and the surgical technique required for its implantation. The patient, a 75-year-old male with bilateral cataract and nonexudative ARMD,

Direct Measurement of the Ciliary Sulcus Diameter Using Optical Coherence Tomography-Inter-Rater Variability.

The determination of sulcus-to-sulcus measurements has been challenging due to the limitations of current approaches. Ultrasound methods are highly operator-dependent and require extensive training, while traditional optical devices cannot visualize structures posterior to the iris. However, modern optical anterior segment coherence tomography (AS-OCT) devices are changing this paradigm by identifying some anatomical landmarks posterior to the iris. This study evaluates the reproducibility of optical sulcus measurements in the context of sizing a novel accommodative intraocular lens (IOL). Pre…

Celebrating 25 Years of Optical Biometry: A Milestone in Ophthalmology.

Optical biometry has fundamentally transformed cataract surgery, and 2024 marked 25 years since the introduction of the first optical biometer. In the early 1980 s, Fercher and colleagues pioneered the optical noncontact eye length measurement, leading to the first interferometric A-scan of the eye. This innovation, patented and later developed by Zeiss, culminated in the release of the IOLMaster in 1999, enabling more accurate and reproducible eye diagnostics. Over the years, optical biometry has evolved into advanced swept-source optical coherence tomography devices, accompanied by numerous

Photochemical Reaction Enabling the Engineering of Photonic Spin-Orbit Coupling in Organic-Crystal Optical Microcavities.

The control and active manipulation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in photonic systems are fundamental in the development of modern spin optics and topological photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate the control of an artificial Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) SOC mediated by photochemical reactions in a microcavity filled with an organic single crystal of photochromic phase-change character. Splitting of the circular polarization components of the optical modes induced by photonic RD SOC is observed experimentally in momentum space. By applying an ultraviolet light beam, we control the spatial molecular

Pressure-Dependent Structural and Band Gap Tuning of Semiconductor Copper(I) Thiocyanate (CuSCN).

Copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) is a p-type semiconductor with exceptional properties for optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, thin-film transistors , organic light-emitting diodes, etc. Understanding the structure-optical property relationships in CuSCN is critical for its optoelectronic applications. Herein, high-pressure techniques combined with theoretical calculations are used to thoroughly investigate the structural and optical changes of CuSCN upon compression. Under high pressure, CuSCN exhibits a progressive decrease of the band gap with different rates, which is relevant to the

Biometry challenges in the longest eyes we have encountered to date.

PURPOSE: This report aims to present biometry challenges and solutions for a patient with the longest eyes we have encountered to date. OBSERVATIONS: A 41-year-old woman with a history of Crouzon syndrome, extreme axial myopia, and posterior segment staphylomas was referred for cataract evaluation. Optical biometry was attempted using two partial coherence interferometry and optical low-coherence reflectometry devices that were available in 2011. Neither device could measure the axial length (AL) of either eye, unfortunately. We were able to measure them by A scan ultrasound, however, with re

Preparation of quantum information encoded on three-photon decoherence-free states via cross-Kerr nonlinearities.

We present a scheme to encode quantum information (single logical qubit information) into three-photon decoherence-free states, which can conserve quantum information from collective decoherence, via nonlinearly optical gates (using cross-Kerr nonlinearities: XKNLs) and linearly optical devices. For the preparation of the decoherence-free state, the nonlinearly optical gates (multi-photon gates) consist of weak XKNLs, quantum bus (qubus) beams, and photon-number-resolving (PNR) measurement. Then, by using a linearly optical device, quantum information can be encoded on three-photon decoherence…

Temperature Field-Driven Directional Space-Confined Crystallization of Perovskite Melt Toward High-Performance Optoelectronic Devices.

The development of optoelectronic devices relies heavily on the advancement of semiconductor materials and microfabrication technologies. Notably, metal halide perovskites with superior optoelectronic properties show great prospects for optical sensing technology. However, the current processing techniques of perovskite materials are mainly solution methods and vapor-phase methods, facing toxic solvents and material waste, which are harmful to the natural environment and human health. Herein, we originally developed the temperature field-driven directional space-confined melt crystallization s

High-crystalline medium-band-gap polymers consisting of benzodithiophene and benzotriazole derivatives for organic photovoltaic cells.

Two semiconducting conjugated polymers were synthesized via Stille polymerization. The structures combined unsubstituted or (triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl (TIPS)-substituted 2,6-bis(trimethylstannyl)benzo[1,2-b:4.5-b']dithiophene (BDT) as a donor unit and benzotriazole with a symmetrically branched alkyl side chain (DTBTz) as an acceptor unit. We investigated the effects of the different BDT moieties on the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the polymers and the film crystallinities and carrier mobilities. The optical-band-gap energies were measured to be 1.97 and 1.95 eV for

Monolithic optofluidic mode coupler for broadband thermo- and piezo-optical characterization of liquids.

We present a monolithic fiber device that enables investigation of the thermo- and piezo-optical properties of liquids using straightforward broadband transmission measurements. The device is a directional mode coupler consisting of a multi-mode liquid core and a single-mode glass core with pronounced coupling resonances whose wavelength strongly depend on the operation temperature. We demonstrated the functionality and flexibility of our device for carbon disulfide, extending the current knowledge of the thermo-optic coefficient by 200 nm at 20 °C and uniquely for high temperatures. Moreover,

Improved selectivity from a wavelength addressable device for wireless stimulation of neural tissue.

Electrical neural stimulation with micro electrodes is a promising technique for restoring lost functions in the central nervous system as a result of injury or disease. One of the problems related to current neural stimulators is the tissue response due to the connecting wires and the presence of a rigid electrode inside soft neural tissue. We have developed a novel, optically activated, microscale photovoltaic neurostimulator based on a custom layered compound semiconductor heterostructure that is both wireless and has a comparatively small volume (<0.01 mm(3)). Optical activation provides a

Angular and Spectral Engineering of Red Organic Light-Emitting Diodes via Cavity-Induced Emission for Photobiomodulation-Related Cellular Responses.

Photobiomodulation using red and near-infrared light has emerged as a promising strategy for promoting skin regeneration because of its ability to stimulate mitochondrial activity and enhance cellular proliferation. However, the optical characteristics of the light source, including angular emission and spectral bandwidth, remain underexplored in terms of their influence on biological outcomes. Here, we demonstrate that emission-engineered red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) can directly regulate cellular responses by tailoring both angular distribution and spectral properties.
