Flexible PEGDA-gelatin hydrogel for optical fibers with enhanced electromechanical properties and initial insights into antimicrobial activity and light transmission.

This study presents optical fibers made of PEGDA-gelatin hydrogels (PG hydrogels) for biomedical and optoelectronic applications, with a focus on flexibility, biocompatibility and performance. These fibers, produced by UV polymerization, have a uniform, coreless structure with adjustable mechanical and optical properties. Among the formulations, PG4 (a PEGDA-to-gelatin ratio of 1:2) showed the best balance between conductivity, stretchability, and transparency due to its stronger cross-linking. Mechanical tests confirmed the flexibility and stability of the material under repeated deformation

Single-fiber reflectance spectroscopy system using unmodified clinical laser fibers for tissue optical property recovery for photodynamic therapy treatment planning.

SIGNIFICANCE: Estimation of tissue optical properties in workflow- and resource-constrained clinical settings is required to support photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment planning, yet large-scale clinical translation remains limited by spectroscopy probe cost, complexity, and the need for probe-specific inverse models. Single-fiber reflectance (SFR) spectroscopy offers a simple and low-cost option, but previous implementations relied on customized angle-polished fibers. AIM: The objective was to develop a proof-of-concept SFR spectroscopy system employing an unmodified, United States Food and

High-linearity terahertz FMCW generation using two-chirped optical tone photomixing in a self-delayed fiber-optic system.

Terahertz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (THz-FMCW) radar has attracted significant attention due to its unique advantages in high-precision sensing and imaging, offering broad prospects for practical applications. However, the nonlinearity of FMCW chirp signals can introduce multiple frequency components, thereby degrading the detection capability of the system. In this work, we propose a two-chirped optical tone photomixing method to address this issue. Without introducing any additional hardware-based linearization components or software-based pre-compensation algorithms, the proposed

Multi-model collaborative early warning for battery systems with integrated fiber optic sensors.

The safety assessment of battery systems is constrained by sparse temperature measurements and monolithic diagnostic frameworks in conventional battery management systems (BMS). To address this, we propose a multi-model collaborative thermal-runaway early-warning framework using distributed temperature sensing. An integrated sensing scheme increases temperature sensing points within the battery pack from 32 to 540 with minimal wiring complexity and is validated in real-world vehicle operation. We establish a functional relationship between temperature Shannon entropy (SE) and average temperatu

Label-free fiber-optic cascade sensor for rapid and ultrasensitive serum folate quantification.

Fiber-optic biosensors based on interferometric structures have attracted considerable attention for rapid and label-free biomarker detection; however, achieving high sensitivity while maintaining practical applicability in complex biological matrices remains challenging. Here, we develop a tapered seven-core fiber (TSCF)-based interferometric biosensor for highly sensitive detection of serum folate. The TSCF cascade architecture generates multiple coupled interference peaks within a compact spectral window, enabling multi-point spectral validation and enhanced evanescent-field interaction. Co

CO2 Sensing Characteristics of 2H-MoS2-Coated D-Shaped Optical Fiber Sensors.

In this study, a highly crystalline 2H (hexagonal)-phase MoS2 sensing layer with a precisely controlled crystal structure was realized through a combination of DC sputtering and sulfurization annealing processes, and subsequently integrated with a D-shaped optical fiber to develop a highly sensitive carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor. Conventionally sputtered MoS2 thin films often suffer from the presence of unstable metallic 1T (tetragonal) phases and a high density of sulfur vacancies, which significantly degrade sensor reversibility and long-term stability. Here, high-temperature annealing under a

Bridging Materials Innovation with an Efficient Photocatalyst-Enabled Optical Fiber Reactor for H2O2 Production.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a green oxidant widely used in water treatment and sustainable chemistry. Although many advanced materials exist for photo- and electrocatalytic production, H2O2 output and stability depend on reactor design and water quality. This study explores a scalable photochemical system employing bismuth vanadate-coated polymeric optical fibers (POF-BVO) illuminated by 440 nm LEDs. A single 20 cm, 3 mm diameter fiber generates H2O2 at 4.3 mg H2O2 h-1 (430 mg H2O2 gcat-1 h-1), with enhanced rates achieved using bundled fibers. The bundled configuration increases fiber packing

Sub-100 fε resolution strain sensing based on an optical fiber frequency comb.

In this paper, we report a high-resolution optical fiber strain sensing system based on optical frequency comb (OFC) beat-frequency demodulation. This system enables both static and dynamic strain detection, featuring a large dynamic strain measurement range and a large spectral range. The sensor employed a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI) as the strain sensing element, which was probed by a narrow-linewidth laser stabilized to it. By leveraging the concept of beat frequency demodulation, the OFC, translated the optical frequency shifts within the strain sensor into the radio frequency

Just Go with the Optical Flow: Enhanced Axon Tracing by Modeling Fiber Connections as Motion.

In this work, we explore the extension of motionbased techniques from computer vision into the realm of biological structure detection. Specifically, we propose using optical flow as a feature for guiding dense axon centerline detection and tracing. Optical flow is a technique that describes the apparent movement of objects over time, as in a video. Our experiments show that interpreting 3D volumes as videos, by interchanging the time axis of optical flow with the x, y, and z axes of the volumes, extracts useful spatial relationships in the context of axon centerline detection. This approach o

Non-invasive diagnosis of lupus nephritis based on dual-mode optical fiber biosensor.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is the most common and severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which requires the use of renal biopsy techniques to determine the pathological type and guide subsequent treatment. Recent studies have identified neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) as a promising biomarker for the non-invasive diagnosis, assessment of disease activity, and prediction of recurrence in lupus nephritis. However, current single-signal detection methods based on NGAL lack sufficient specificity and accuracy. In this paper, we reported a novel dual-mode optical fib
