Effect of the quality of orthodontic finishing on the stability of anterior tooth alignment.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the quality of orthodontic finishing influences long-term stability of anterior tooth alignment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 38 patients. Data were obtained at the beginning of treatment (T0), at the end (T1), and at least 5 years after T1 (T2). At this point, the individuals were no longer wearing retainers. Anterior tooth alignment was measured using Little's index (LI). Effect on alignment stability was tested with multiple linear regression using LI-T0, LI-T1, intercanine width difference T1-T0, overbite (T1), overjet (T1), age

The William Houston Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 2010.

This paper describes the clinical orthodontic treatment of two cases treated by the recipient of the 2010 Membership in Orthodontics William Houston Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The first case describes a three-phase treatment approach to correct a class II division 2 malocclusion on a non-extraction basis. The second case describes the treatment of a class III malocclusion with a notable unilateral crossbite using a quad-helix, a single premolar extraction and upper and lower pre-adjusted fixed appliances.

Orthodontic treatment for prominent upper front teeth (Class II malocclusion) in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Prominent upper front teeth are a common problem affecting about a quarter of 12-year-old children in the UK. The condition develops when permanent teeth erupt. These teeth are more likely to be injured and their appearance can cause significant distress. Children are often referred to an orthodontist for treatment with dental braces to reduce the prominence of their teeth. If a child is referred at a young age, the orthodontist is faced with the dilemma of whether to treat the patient early or to wait and provide treatment in adolescence. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of orth

Treatment of class II division 1 malocclusion with myofunctional trainer system in early mixed dentition period.

Dentofacial growth interferences, caused by abnormal lip and tongue function in the mixed dentition period are a common clinical condition. The main purpose of the treatment in such cases is to eliminate oral dysfunction, establish muscular balance and correct or diminish maxillary incisor protrusion. The position of the teeth is determined by the lip and tongue pressure. Lip function may have been the cause of forcing teeth in to malposition they occupy. The case report is presented where the myofunctional trainer T4K is used during growth phase.

Orthodontic treatment stability predictors: A retrospective longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine medium- to long-term orthodontic treatment stability and its possible association with certain variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective longitudinal study of 70 postretention patients, the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index was measured at the start (T1) and end (T2) of treatment and between 4 and 10 years afterwards (T3). The stability was considered absolute when the T2 and T3 values were identical and relative when the difference was within the ±5 range. RESULTS: Among the 70 patients, 65.8% were female and 34.2% were male. Their mean age was 14.5 years.

The effects of fulvic acids and low-level laser therapy on orthodontic retention in rats.

BACKGROUND: Shortening retention time and minimizing relapse rates are ongoing challenges in orthodontics. This study investigated the effects of natural fulvic acids (FAs) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on orthodontic retention in rats. METHODS: Seventy-two male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent mesial movement of the left maxillary first molar using a 50 g force via a nickel-titanium tension spring. After three weeks of movement, the rats entered the retention phase with retainer wires and were divided into four groups: Control (no intervention), FAs (80 mg/kg orally daily), LLLT (808 nm la

Dental appliances with inadequate occlusal coverage: a case report.

A case is presented which illustrates the occlusal problems that can develop when a dental appliance such as a temporomandibular splint with incomplete occlusal cover is worn for a reasonable length of time. As in this case, the selective over-eruption of posterior teeth not incorporated in the appliance can lead to the development of an anterior open bite and an increased overjet. A simple orthodontic method to correct the iatrogenic malocclusion through the re-intrusion of the over-erupted teeth is shown and the importance of providing long-term dental appliances with full occlusal contact i

Manufacturing of PEEK orthodontic baseplate and 3D-printed alloy components from an intraoral scan.

This paper demonstrates a digital manufacturing technique of a removable orthodontic appliance from an intraoral scan. An intraoral scan was made for the maxillary and mandibular arches. 3Shape Orthodontics Appliance Designer produced the virtual Hawley retainer, consisting of alloy components (Adam Clasps and Fitted Labial bow) and a base plate. The base plate design was modified to adapt to inserting the alloy components, which were combined using cold-cured acrylic. The finished Hawley retainer was assessed intraorally. The described technique emphasizes the design specifications of digital

Surgical-orthodontic management of bilateral multiple impactions in non-syndromic patient.

Several surgical and orthodontic treatment options are available to disimpact the impacted teeth. But the closed eruption technique has the best long-term prognosis. The tooth is surgically exposed, an attachment is bonded to it, flap is resutured over it and an orthodontic extrusive force is delivered to bring the tooth into occlusion. This case report presents a case with multiple impacted teeth in which no syndrome or systemic conditions were detected. A 20-year-old female patient reported for orthodontic treatment with chief complaint of multiple unerupted permanent teeth and retained prim
