Aesthetic Preferences for Replacement of Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors: A Comparison of Canine Substitution, Implants and Resin-Bonded Bridges Among Australian Dental Professionals and Laypeople.

BACKGROUND: Aesthetic outcomes of treatment options for missing maxillary lateral incisors significantly influence patient satisfaction. This study compared aesthetic treatment outcome preferences for canine substitution, resin-bonded bridges and implants among Australian orthodontists, prosthodontists, general dentists and laypeople. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey assessed attractiveness ratings and preferences using a ranking system and a Likert scale. One-way and two-way ANOVA examined differences by respondent group and treatment type. RESULTS: Among 547 respondents (orthodonti

Assessing the Influence of Chin Asymmetry on Perceived Facial Esthetics With 3-Dimensional Images.

PURPOSE: We used 3-dimensinonal (3D) images to assess the influence of chin asymmetry on perceived facial esthetics, investigate the cognitive boundaries of chin asymmetry among orthodontists, general dentists, and laypersons, and provide quantitative reference for clinical treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3D facial image was obtained using the 3dMD imaging system (3dMD, Atlanta, GA). The chin was altered in 2-mm increments from 0 to 12 mm and to the left and right using the software program. These images were rated by 66 orthodontists, 89 general dentists, and 66 laypersons as 1) chin sym

Can 3D imaging and digital software increase the ability to predict dental arch form after orthodontic treatment?

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of dental clinicians to predict posttreatment dental arch forms in patients with malocclusion with the aid of 3D imaging and digital software in comparison with a conventional method. METHODS: Pretreatment and posttreatment dental plaster casts of 100 patients (200 maxillary models and 200 mandibular models) were selected. Three orthodontists selected the best-fitted archwires among 5 commercially available preformed nickel-titanium archwires using 2 methods. In the conventional method, they fit the archwires to pretreatment casts, and in

Bayesian-Based Decision Support System for Assessing the Needs for Orthodontic Treatment.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, a clinical decision support system was developed to help general practitioners assess the need for orthodontic treatment in patients with permanent dentition. METHODS: We chose a Bayesian network (BN) as the underlying model for assessing the need for orthodontic treatment. One thousand permanent dentition patient data sets chosen from a hospital record system were prepared in which one data element represented one participant with information for all variables and their stated need for orthodontic treatment. To evaluate the system, we compared the assessment result

Complications of orthognathic surgery.

Although orthognathic surgery has now become a routine part of oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, concern and apprehension about major jaw surgery continues to plague the minds of many orthodontists faced with the prospect of referring their patients for surgery. Like all surgery, complications also occur with orthognathic procedures, most of which can be prevented by thorough planning and careful surgery. In this article a brief overview of the potential complications associated with orthognathic surgery is presented for the benefit of orthodontists involved in the management of patient

Panoramic screening for dental anomalies assessed by professionals with identical and different backgrounds.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate how dental professionals with identical and different backgrounds assess dental anomalies viewed on panoramic radiographs. 101 panoramic radiographs performed of 9-to-10-yr-old children were examined independently by three orthodontists and two radiologists. All observers agreed on the recording of number and identification of congenitally missing permanent teeth. The observers' assessments of malpositioned teeth, teeth in infraocclusion, and primary teeth with atypical/non root resorption varied, however, to a great extent. Two of the orthodontists

A brief history of orthodontic retention.

The retention phase has become an accepted part of orthodontic therapy. Irrespective of the patient's age, underlying malocclusion or the type of mechanotherapy, an orthodontist will use some retention method in virtually every patient following completion of the active treatment. This article presents a short description of the history of orthodontic retention and highlights major developments in retention strategy.

Global survey to assess preferences when attending virtual orthodontic learning sessions: optimising uptake from virtual lectures.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the issues concerning the conducting of virtual orthodontic learning sessions (VOLSs) is essential. This study aims to identify attendees- and host-related aspects that could optimise learning and uptake from the VOLSs. METHODOLOGY: Fourteen pre-validated questions were anonymously and electronically sent to 3000 orthodontic residents and specialists globally. The survey included demographic questions and questions to gauge attendees' engagement, memorising, and motivation-related factors. Reminders were sent at two-week intervals to non-respondents. The survey was c

Age changes of jaws and soft tissue profile.

Age-related changes of jaws and soft tissue profile are important both for orthodontists and general dentists. Mouth profile is the area which is manipulated during dental treatment. These changes should be planned in accordance with other components of facial profile to achieve ultimate aim of structural balance, functional efficacy, and esthetic harmony. Through this paper, the authors wish to discuss age changes of the hard and soft tissues of human face which would help not only the orthodontists but also oral surgeons, prosthodontists, pedodontists, and general dentists.

Comparative Assessment of Smile Attractiveness Perception and Treatment Need Across Dental Professionals and Laypersons.

INTRODUCTION: Smile esthetics are crucial in orthodontics; however, orthodontists, general dentists, and laypersons perceive deviations differently, prompting the need for comparative evaluation. This study explored how these groups assess upper midline discrepancies, gingival display, maxillary cant, reduced upper teeth show, asymmetric upper lip elevation, and chin deviation, aiming to determine their combined impact on smile attractiveness and treatment needs while identifying thresholds for clinical intervention to enhance patient-focused care. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was

Diagnosis and treatment of maxillomandibular dysplasias.

Skeletal dysplasia of the maxilla and/or mandible is responsible for prognathism or retrognathism. The severity of either condition is in direct proportion to the degree of dysplasia noted within each jaw. Mandibular prognathism is real or apparent. Some of the patients described in this article demonstrate this quite clearly when the jaws are analyzed individually and related to each other. A differential diagnosis is essential to determine whether the abnormality is in the maxilla or the mandible, or both. When recognized early in the formative years, it permits the orthodontist to employ gu

[Possibilities and limitations of treatment with clear aligners. An orientation].

The aim of this research was to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of an orthodontic treatment with clear-aligner systems, specifically with Invisalign®. In addition to a review of the literature, 4 orthodontists and 9 patients treated with fixed orthodontic therapy and Invisalign® were interviewed. The literature showed that it is difficult to correct an extrusion, rotation or overjet with clear aligners. Often 'refinement' (additional intervention during treatment) is necessary to achieve the best possible end result. The patients interviewed experienced few limitations in their daily

Orthodontic treatment in long-term survivors after pediatric bone marrow transplantation.

Children treated for childhood cancers with both radiation and chemotherapy often exhibit disturbances in dental development. A retrospective analysis of treatment outcome in 10 orthodontically treated children was performed. A questionnaire was sent to each child's orthodontist, and 5 orthodontists reported that the patient's medical condition influenced their choice of treatment plan. Three orthodontists, all treating patients with severely disturbed root development, reported using lighter forces than they used with the average patient. With regard to complications related to orthodontic tr

Orthodontic treatment for the cleft palate patient.

This article is an overview of the treatment possibilities and the role of the orthodontist in the management of patients with cleft palate. Orthodontic intervention and treatment may be indicated soon after birth (infant orthopedics), in the deciduous, mixed, and permanent dentitions and also in the adult patient. This article focuses primarily on decision-making and procedural steps performed by the orthodontist during the permanent dentition stage. The need for coordinated interaction with other team members is emphasized.

The team approach in orofacial management.

Successful treatment of head and neck deformities by the plastic and maxillofacial surgeon often involves participation of the speech pathologist and orthodontist in planning therapy and helping the patient adapt to the surgery performed. Patients are presented demonstrating the communication in treatment planning and implementation recommended between surgeon, speech pathologist, and orthodontist. We describe the tools of examination used in the Division of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery at Duke University Medical Center.

Bias in a blink: Shedding light on implicit attitudes toward patients with a cleft lip.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that patients with cleft lip and/or palate may be stigmatized in society. The objective of this study was to use an implicit association test to evaluate the subconscious biases of non-health care providers and orthodontists against patients with a repaired cleft lip (CL). METHODS: Respondents participated in an implicit association test. Pictures of patients with CL and controls were shown to participants, along with terms representing positive and negative attributes. Participants were prompted to match pictures to the attributes.
