[Osteogenesis imperfecta - diagnostic challenges].

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is one of the commonest skeletal disorders with an incidence about one in 10,000. It is characterized by clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Congenital lethal OI (OI type II) is the most severe from with a possibility of the early prenatal sonographic diagnosis. The authors present two clinical cases of antenatal diagnosis of OI in 26 and 24 weeks of gestation. The pregnancies were terminated. The accurate specific diagnosis was based on the clinical examination and radiographic features. In case N 2 additional findings were ascites and hydrothorax, that may occasi…

Fracture after distraction osteogenesis.

We reviewed 173 patients undergoing distraction osteogenesis to determine the incidence, location and timing of fractures occurring as a complication of the procedure. There were 17 fractures in 180 lengthened segments giving an overall rate of fracture of 9.4%. Unexpectedly, the pattern and location of the fractures were very variable; six were within the regenerate itself, six at the junction between the regenerate and the original bone and five at distant sites in the limb. Of those occurring in the regenerate, five were noted to be associated with compression and partial collapse of the re…

[Syndromes 16. Osteogenesis imperfecta].

Osteogenesis imperfecta consists of a group of hereditary connective tissue diseases with fragility of the bone as a general feature. Frequently occurring other characteristics are blue sclerae, opalescent teeth, hearing loss, disorders of the skeleton, and hyperextensibility of the joints. Obliteration and the unusual shape of the pulp chambers may interfere with dental treatment.

Perinatal lethal osteogenesis imperfecta.

Perinatal lethal osteogenesis imperfecta is the result of heterozygous mutations of the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes that encode the alpha 1(I) and alpha 2(I) chains of type I collagen, respectively. Point mutations resulting in the substitution of Gly residues in Gly-X-Y amino acid triplets of the triple helical domain of the alpha 1(I) or alpha 2(I) chains are the most frequent mutations. They interrupt the repetitive Gly-X-Y structure that is mandatory for the formation of a stable triple helix. Most babies have their own private de novo mutation. However, the recurrence rate is about 7% owing t…

Part 2. Osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), the most common genetic disorder of bone, is characterized by frequent, unpredictable fractures of the long bones with progressive skeletal deformity. Often diagnosed in the early years of life, OI requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary plan of care involving patient, family, and community. The nurse's role as caregiver, educator, and patient advocate is to foster normal physical and psychosocial growth and development and minimize the opportunity for fracture.

[Osteogenesis imperfecta cystica (Fairbank)--a special form of osteogenesis imperfecta congenita (Vrolik) (author's transl)].

Two patients, aged 13 and 19 years, with osteogenesis imperfecta congenita (Vrolik) have been seen at the rehabilitation centre at Neckargemund. The younger patient showed the typical appearances of osteogenesis imperfecta cystica (Fairbank), while the older patient failed to show these changes in the skeleton. Contrary to the frequently expressed view that patients with osteogenesis imperfecta congenita always die in the perinatal period, they may survive for a considerable length of time. The change of osteogenesis imperfecta congenita (Vrolik) into osteogensis imperfecta cystica (Fairbank) …

Evaluation of stomatognathic problems in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (osteogenesis imperfecta - oi) - preliminary study.

UNLABELLED: According to epidemiological data, muscular dysfunctions of the masticatory system occur in 15-23% of the population. Preventive examinations of functional disorders of the stomatognathic system are, therefore, of particular importance. A distinct group of patients exposed to dysfunctions in the area of the masticatory organ locomotor apparatus comprises those with genetic diseases characterised by disorders in collagen formation. One of such diseases is osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta that usually goes together with the former. AIM: The objective of thi…
