[Inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Apropos of 10 cases].

Authors report a retrospective study of 10 new cases of inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses, observed during a 26 years period, with a 6.1 years average follow up. This group is marked by 2 cases of directly carcinomatous association, 4 cases of recurrence and 2 cases of later malignant transformation. The responsibility of different types of human papillomavirus in the origin of this tumor and its malignant transformation is suspected. Preoperative evaluation is based on clinical examination, CT scan and endoscopic method while diagnosis and prognosis depend on histopathologi

Inverted papilloma of the renal pelvis. Cytologic features of ureteral washings.

A case of rare inverted papilloma of the renal pelvis with cytologic study of ureteral washings is described. Cytologic findings included increased numbers of urothelial cell clusters with mild degenerative changes. Although cytology was helpful in establishing the presence of a papillary transitional-cell lesion, histologic analysis following resection was required to distinguish between the possibilities of transitional-cell carcinoma and inverted papilloma.

Inverted papilloma of the lacrimal sac, the paranasal sinuses and the cervical region.

A 22-year-old woman presented with a lacrimal sac mass which on biopsy was an inverted papilloma. Two years later an ipsilateral cervical mass was removed, which contained inverted papilloma with a histologically typical pattern. Subsequently, the patient had a medial maxillectomy and remains well 5 years later. The cervical mass may represent inverted papilloma arising in a branchial cleft cyst or it may be a metastasis of benign papilloma to a regional lymph node. This is the second such case reported and the first with substantial followup.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in Frontal Sinus Inverted Papilloma: A Systematic Review.

Background: Frontal sinus inverted papilloma (IP) is a particularly rare form of IP and its management is challenging, with a high rate of recurrence. Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the recurrence rate of frontal sinus IP after surgery and compare this rate according to the surgical modality (purely endoscopic sinus surgery vs. a combined/open approach). Design: A systematic review without meta-analysis conducted by a working group of the Young Otolaryngologists of the International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies (yo-IFOS). Data Sources and Methods: A systematic analysis o

Recurrent inverted papilloma coexisted with skull base lymphoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma is an uncommon neoplasm in the nasal cavity. It is a histologically benign tumor, but has a high recurrence and local invasion rate. In addition, nasal or skull base lymphoma is another rare neoplasm. The coexistence of these two tumors in one case makes the diagnosis and related treatment difficult. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of an immunocompetent patient, who had a history of inverted papilloma 20 years ago. The patient presented with an infiltrated mass lesion in the nasal cavity with extension to the frontal base. The repeated biopsies revealed inverted

Morphologic, intraoperative, and histologic risk factors for sinonasal inverted papilloma recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal inverted papillomas (IP) are benign neoplasms with a propensity for local recurrence. Many risk factors are reported, with little consistency between studies. This study aimed to comprehensively assess for demographic, imaging, histopathologic, and intraoperative risk factors for recurrence. METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study of patients with pathologically diagnosed IP without malignancy who underwent surgical resection between 1997 and 2018. Eligible patients were identified through a database maintained by the Department of Pathology. Logi

Occupational risk factors for sinonasal inverted papilloma: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is an uncommon benign tumour characterised by frequent recurrence and, in approximately 10% of cases, by neoplastic transformation. IP aetiology is unknown but human papillomavirus is detectable in about one quarter of tumours. As some occupational hazards have been reported to be possible risk factors for IP, the aim of this study was to assess risk for sinonasal IP associated with prior exposure to suspected occupational risk factors for sinonasal malignancies. METHODS: Between 1996 and 2007, data on incident cases were collected from hospitals

[Relationship between prognosis of nasal inverted papilloma and human papillomavirus types].

OBJECTIVE: To detected HPV human papillomavirus DNA and HPV types in NIP nasal inverted papilloma, to inquire into the infection of HPV in the pathogenesis of NIP, and the relationship of HPV with the prognosis of NIP. METHODS: Twenty-eight cases of NIP were divided into 3 groups: no recurrence group (group 1), recurrence group (group 2), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in NIP group (malignancy group, group 3). Ten cases of benign nasal polyps were used as control group. HPV-DNA types of 6, 11, 16, 18 and general type were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: Total pos

Value of a Multidisciplinary Approach in Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma with Extensive Ossification.

BACKGROUND Inverted papilloma is a benign epithelial lesion of the nasal cavities. Although commonly encountered in clinical practice, it rarely presents with extensive ossification and few cases have been described in the literature. CASE REPORT Herein, we describe the case of a 51-year-old man who presented to clinical attention for persistent right nasal obstruction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans of the facial bones showed a lobated lesion with ossification occupying most of the right nasal cavity. The lesion was removed by endoscopic sinus surgery, lea

Clinical features of nasal and sinonasal inverted papilloma associated with malignancy.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal and sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) are rare benign tumors and have the potential to exhibit malignancy in approximately 10% of cases. This study aimed to analyze the clinical features of IP associated with malignancy. Furthermore, we reviewed our therapeutic strategy and the clinical course of malignant IP. METHODS: Overall, 70 patients with IP at our institution were retrospectively analyzed from April 2006 to December 2015; of these, six (9%) had associated malignancy. Data was collected on sex, age, presenting symptoms (nasal bleeding, rhinorrhea, facial or cheek pain,

Inverted Sinonasal Papilloma Masquerading as a Malignancy - Report of an Unusual Case.

Inverted sinonasal papilloma (ISP) is a benign epithelial neoplasm arising from the Schneiderian membrane. We report a case of ISP in a 50-year-old male that clinically presented as a polypoid mass in the nasal cavity. Imaging studies revealed it to be an aggressive lesion showing intracranial extension. On histopathological examination of the excised specimen, a diagnosis of ISP was arrived at. However, an extensive sampling of the tissue revealed no evidence of any malignant transformation. Taking into account the suggested viral aetiology for such lesions and the aggressiveness observed in

Schneiderian papillomas: comparative review of exophytic, oncocytic, and inverted types.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal papillomas are benign epithelial neoplasms arising from Schneiderian mucosa. The three subtypes, exophytic, oncocytic, and inverted (inverted papilloma [IP]), should be distinguished from one another histopathologically. This study (1) highlights the histopathological and clinical differences between the Schneiderian papilloma subtypes and (2) identifies clinical features that potentially predict papilloma subtypes. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients with Schneiderian papillomas over an 11-year period. RESULTS: Seventy patients with sinonasal papi
