Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a slow growing malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands, mainly occurring in minor salivary glands and relatively rare in parotid glands. It has got a remarkable capacity for extensive subclinical spread to the adjacent structures. Here, we present a case report of adenoid cystic carcinoma of parotid gland with perineural and perivascular spread. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of parotid gland with perivascular spread along a major artery (ECA) and perineural spread along two different nerves (mandibular nerve and faci

INTRODUCTION: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) represents 1-6% of parotid gland neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We report cytomorphological features of two uncommon variants of acinic cell carcinoma. The first case was an eleven-year-old female with a nodular mass in parotid and the FNA smears demonstrated a lymphoepithelial lesion composed of epithelial tumour cells with features of acinar cells in a lymphoid background. The second case was a 62-year-old male with a large parotid mass. The FNA smears revealed presence of extracellular, acellular amyloid-like material with tumour cells arranged in follicl

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an exceedingly rare neoplasm arising from the antigen-presenting cells of the immune system. We report a case of IDCS occurring in a 69-year-old man who presented to an outside institution with a painless mass in his right parotid gland for several months. He presented to our institution after undergoing a superficial parotidectomy. A diagnosis of undifferentiated neoplasm, favoring poorly differentiated carcinoma, was made at that time. He underwent a total parotidectomy and neck dissection at our institution. Microscopically, the tumor was com

Neoplasms of the major and minor salivary glands are morphologically and a clinically diverse group of neoplasms which lead the clinician to diagnostic and management challenges. This article aims to report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in 83 - year - old woman who presented in the dermatology clinic with a tumour mass in the left auricular area. The patient complained of pain and abnormal bleeding of the mass. The lesion was examined, and surgical treatment was performed. A tumour was extirpated, and partial resection of both the parotid gland and the sternocleidomastoid muscle was done.

INTRODUCTION: Primary leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare neoplasm, develops from smooth muscle cells. Its primary origin in the face and especially in the salivary glands is even more rare.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old boy, with no prior history was hospitalized for swelling in the left parotid area having appeared 5 months before. The mass was painless and there was no facial paralysis. CT scan showed a tumoral process of mixed density in the left parotid gland. Thoracoabdominal CT scan was normal. Conservative parotidectomy was performed. The histological diagnosis was p

Basaloid neoplasms of the head and neck region pose a specific challenge both for clinicians and pathologists. It is a diverse group of neoplasms that include benign as well as malignant entities. These neoplasms can arise from various head and neck subsites such as skin, salivary gland, and sinonasal tract. Cytological diagnosis of these tumors is extremely difficult due to morphological overlap with other biphasic tumors and within the basaloid group itself. Here, we are presenting a case of basaloid neoplasm which turned out to be a basal cell adenocarcinoma of the left parotid gland on pos

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare neoplasm. We here describe the case of a 78-year-old male patient presenting with such a tumor. Five years after surgical treatment, the patient is alive and recurrence-free. To our knowledge, our case represents just the sixth case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland reported in the English literature. The clinical features of these cases are summarized.

The authors describe the diagnostic problems and difficulties of treatment of Warthin's tumor combined with actinomycosis. A 48-year-old woman was presented with a mass in the left parotid region and paresis of the lower left palpebra. The CT, echography, parotid X-ray findings supposed a neoplasm of the left parotid gland which was proved by intraoperative freezing histology. The ramus of the mandible was involved in the process. Total parotidectomy and partial mandiblectomy were performed, with sacrifice of the facial nerve, followed by nerve reconstruction. The final histological evaluation

Lupus erythematosus (LE) panniculitis, also called lupus profundus, is an uncommon but well-established manifestation of both chronic cutaneous (discoid) LE and systemic LE. Although LE panniculitis characteristically may involve the face, specific parotid and periparotid involvement has not, to the best of our knowledge, been previously reported. We describe the clinicopathologic correlation of two cases of LE panniculitis that presented as apparent primary parotid parenchymal disease; one as a neoplasm, the other as parotiditis. Failure to recognize LE panniculitis resulted in prolonged peri

Hybrid tumors of salivary glands are rare neoplasms. We describe a case of a 74-year-old male with a hybrid carcinoma composed of epithelial-myoepithelial and salivary duct carcinomas of the right parotid gland. The presence of two components was verified by differential immunohistochemical staining. The tumor was surgically resected. There has been no evidence of recurrence to date. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a hybrid carcinoma composed of epithelial-myoepithelial and salivary duct carcinomas of the parotid gland in Japan.

Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is a rare disorder, characterized by the development of skin adnexal tumors, including cylindromas, trichoepitheliomas, spiradenomas. Although these neoplasms are benign in most patients, a malignant transformation can rarely occur. Furthermore, an occasional association between cutaneous adnexal tumors and basal cell adenoma as well as adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland has been rarely described, with approximately 20 cases reported. We report a case of BSS presenting with a malignant eccrine spiradenocylindroma, in a patient with previous history of parotid basal ce

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas (EMC) are rare neoplasms of the salivary gland with an incidence of less than 1% arising predominantly in the parotid gland. Although they are thought to be of low grade malignancy, fatal courses are described. We report a case of EMC of the parotid gland in a 58-year-old woman with an unfavorable course of this disease in long term follow-up. The malignant potential of this tumor is discussed. In addition, we include another case of EMC of the submandibular gland.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm. The parotid gland is the predominant site of origin. ACC has a tendency to recur and metastasize, rarely enough to soft tissue as well as other sites. Medical records of a 56-year-old male with a known history of acinic cell carcinoma of the left parotid gland were reviewed. This report aims to highlight the need for early clinical suspicion of the metastatic tendency of parotid gland ACC in patients' soft tissues, and the vigorous oncologic approach to any suspected metastatic deposits, as this is the standard of practice

OBJECTIVE: To examine the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in parotid tissues from patients with positive serum HBV markers.
METHODS: HBsAg and HBcAg were examined in parotid biopsy tissues from patients with suspected parotid tumor and positive serum HBV markers by immunocytochemistry, and HBV DNA was detected in parotid tissues by PCR.
RESULTS: Among the 22 patients with a parotid tumor, only one was pathologically confirmed as a neoplasm; all others were benign. HBsAg and HBcAg were present in parotid cells

Parotid metastases from non-head-and-neck cancers are rare and may represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. A late metastasis to the parotid gland from a seminoma is an unusual manifestation of disease. A 45-year-old man with a history of testicular seminoma 5 years earlier presented with a rapidly progressing parotid mass. Ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a space-occupying lesion at the angle of the right jaw. The mass was infiltrating into the parotid gland and into the parapharyngeal space. A primary parotid neoplasm was suspected, and panendoscopy combined with open

Salivary gland disease is well established as an important HIV associated oral lesion. It manifests as salivary gland swelling involving one or both parotid glands with or without xerostomia. In the context of HIV, the swelling may be due to a wide spectrum of pathological conditions that include reactive or inflammatory disorders, acute and chronic infections, and neoplasms. This paper reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, aspects of diagnosis and management of HIV associated salivary gland enlargement, in particular parotid gland enlargement, due to benign lymphoepit

Intraparotid hemangioma of the children is a rare neoplasm, posing diagnostic dilemma to the diagnosticians as well as treating clinicians. A 2-month-old male infant presented with a diffuse swelling in the parotid region since birth that was gradually increasing in size. The ultrasonography (USG) report was suggestive of a right intraparotid mass of uncertain etiology; whereas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) report inclined toward a mass associated with chronic inflammatory pathology. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) suggested two differentials - a vascular neoplasm of the parotid glan

Metastasis of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is rare and usually presented as a locoregional recurrence developed many years after excision of the primary tumor although the PA is the most common neoplasm in the parotid gland. We described a case of a 48-year-old male with a parotid tumor with multiple enlarged ipsilateral lymph nodes which suggested a malignancy. The tumors had been neither evaluated nor excised and preoperative evaluation revealed benign PA in both lesions. After the complete surgical excision, the final pathology was notable for benign PA with metastasis to regional lymph nodes.

Warthin's tumour is the second most common benign neoplasm to affect the salivary glands. It virtually affects the sole parotid gland. A sudden increase in a tumour's size is usually due to a malignant transformation of the tumour. The transformation of the lymphoid stroma into malignant lymphoma is relatively common, while an epithelial malignancy is extremely rare. In this paper, the authors present a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumour. The patient underwent enucleoresection of the tumour. Intraoperative frozen section revealed the presence of a cystic component asso
